Steps that wait for the door

A PowerStep sits folded beneath the body until a door opens, then brings a 6" wide aluminum step down and out under your foot. Close the doors and it goes back underneath, so nothing hangs below the rocker between stops.

Down for the door, then away

Open a door and the board swings down and out beneath it; close up and it folds back under the body. Stowed, it sits beneath the vehicle instead of below the rocker panel, which keeps ground clearance where the vehicle maker set it.

Each board is corrosion-resistant aluminum finished in textured black powder coat, turning on stainless steel hinge pins. It is rated to carry up to 300 lb per door and lit by LED lamps, built for a step that gets used every day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers on specs, fit and support

Is it really plug-and-play, or will I be splicing wires?

It depends on the version, and the listing title tells you which one this is. Plug-N-Play versions read the door signal through a module that plugs into the OBD-II port, which removes most of the work of finding and tapping door wires. The install is still electrical, though: the guides join the harness with crimp or Posi-style connectors, and on some vehicles tap a factory wire or connect a lead at the battery. Hard-Wire versions get their signal by splicing into the vehicle's own wiring. Either way, budget time for the wiring.

Will I have to drill or cut anything?

Often, yes. Many applications drill mounting holes in the pinch weld or a small hole in the floor to pass wires, and on shorter cabs the boards are trimmed to length with the cut dimensions given in the guide. The installation guide for your vehicle is the authority on both, so read it before you commit to a do-it-yourself install.

How long does installation take, and can I do it myself?

The guides estimate 2 to 5 hours depending on the vehicle and rate the job at the experienced end of their skill scale. AMP Research recommends professional installation for every application. If you do it yourself, check the parts against the guide's list before you begin, use a torque wrench, and test every door when you finish.

Will the steps keep working in snow, ice and road salt?

Mud, salt and ice can build up in the linkages and cause noise or binding, so cleaning is part of owning a set. AMP Research's procedure is to pressure-wash the front and rear linkages while avoiding the motors, then apply a dry-film silicone spray to the pivots and cycle the doors. Do not use grease, oil, WD-40 or penetrants. For hard winters, the PowerStep Xtreme adds a second motor on each side for extra torque.

How low does the step sit when it deploys?

AMP Research does not publish one deployed height for the PowerStep, because it depends on the vehicle it is fitted to. If the vehicle has been lifted and the standard step sits too high, the PowerStep XL is designed to deploy up to 3" lower.

What does the warranty cover?

Defects in materials and workmanship, on boards installed according to the supplied instructions. AMP Research will repair or replace a defective part, but labor to remove or reinstall it is not included. Coverage belongs to the original purchaser and ends if the steps are moved to another vehicle or the vehicle changes hands. Damage from misuse, accidents, improper installation, modification, poor maintenance or road hazards is excluded.
