Gen 3 is the current generation, and it is a real revision rather than a badge change. The top panels are heavy-duty aluminum skins over a high-density polymer core, roughly 22 percent stronger than the original MX4 and rated for 400 lb evenly distributed on the closed cover. The latch components were re-engineered for better resistance to forced entry than Gen 2, and the perimeter uses revised EPDM seals with tight-fit clamps plus a longer dual-action tailgate seal. Drain tubes carry water off the cover and out through the bed.

What the MX4 is really for is the owner who uses the bed. Fold the panels forward and lock them flush against the cab and you can drive with the whole bed open for a fridge, a dirt bike, or a stack of lumber, no removing the cover and no tools. It is also the only hard fold that leaves your third brake light visible in every position, which matters more than it sounds like it should when the cover is standing up behind the cab.
