Weather Guard Compact Steel Truck Rack, 1,000 lb, Matte Black (1345-52-02)

Truck Rack Weight Capacity and Loading Ladders

Rack ratings range from around 250 lb on a single side ladder carrier to 1,700 lb on a heavy duty full-size steel rack. That is a very wide span, and the number only means what it says under specific conditions.

What Does a Rack Rating Assume?

An evenly distributed load, carried on the crossbars, with the vehicle moving normally. It does not assume the whole weight sitting on one bar, and it does not include dynamic loads from a rough site, which can briefly be far higher than the static weight you loaded.

Work Out What You Actually Carry

Weigh it rather than estimating, at least once. Ladders, conduit and stock add up faster than people expect, and the total is what should be compared against the rating.

  • 250 lb to 300 lb: one or two extension ladders, occasional use.
  • 800 lb: mixed ladders, conduit and light stock.
  • 1,000 lb: daily trade use with heavier material.
  • 1,700 lb: sustained heavy loads on a full-size work truck.

Then leave margin. Buying at exactly your load means every extra item is an overload.

Distribution Changes the Answer

Spread the load across both crossbars and keep it centred side to side. A load concentrated at one end of one bar can exceed a local limit while the total is well inside the rating, and that is how bars get bent on racks that were never overloaded on paper.

Long items should overhang evenly rather than projecting a long way at one end, both for the rack and for how the truck handles in a crosswind.

A Loading Method That Works

Lift one end onto the rear crossbar first, then walk forward under the ladder pushing it along the bars rather than carrying the whole weight at once. It halves what you are lifting at any moment and keeps the load close to your body.

Tie down at both ends, not just the middle. A single strap over the centre lets a ladder pivot, and a pivoting ladder works its way sideways over a few miles.

Check the straps at the first stop of the day. Webbing settles, ladders bed down against the bars and a strap that was tight in the yard is often noticeably slack twenty minutes later.

Check the Mounts, Not Just the Rack

The rating belongs to the whole installation. A rack rated 1,000 lb bolted through unsupported sheet metal is limited by the sheet metal. Use the mounting positions the rack is designed for, add backing plates where the instructions call for them and retighten after the first week.

Compare ratings across truck racks and ladder racks, and see headache racks if the load also needs stopping at the cab.
