Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers on specs, fit and support

Why do I need to spread the housing at all?

On a Salisbury style axle the carrier bearing pre-load is created by pressing extra shim in beside the bearings, and there is no room to do that with the housing at rest. Spreading it open a controlled amount gives you the clearance. It is the method the axle manufacturers themselves endorse.

Which axles does the plate fit?

It is pre-drilled with a hole pattern that suits most commonly available axle types, and the Dana 44 style Salisbury assembly is the classic example. Check your housing has the cast in spreader sockets before you start, because that is what the tool bolts to.

What happens if the pre-load is wrong?

Insufficient pre-load can cause carrier bearing failure or ring and pinion failure on any differential. On an Air Locker specifically it can also cause oil and air leakage, because the locker depends on that assembly staying tight and sealed.

Can I over-spread the housing?

Yes, and this tool gives you enough leverage to do it. Use a dial indicator, spread only to the limit the axle manufacturer specifies, and release it as soon as the shims are in. Over-spreading permanently distorts the casting.

Is this the same as the bearing puller?

No, they are different steps in the same job. The spreader 0770003 opens the housing so shims can go in. The bearing puller 0770001 removes carrier and pinion bearings. Both are part of ARB's Air Locker tool range and a full setup often uses both.

Does it come with a case?

Yes, a durable carry case with a dedicated powder coated parts tray, which keeps the plate, the two threaded rods and the four blocks together between jobs.
