BackRack Original Short Headache Rack: Close-up of a black Original style headache rack mounted behind the cab of a red pickup.

A cab guard for covered beds

Running a tonneau cover no longer rules out a headache rack. The Original Short rides above the cover on its adapter and settles in at roof height for a clean, factory-like line.

Strap points behind the cab

Flat bars give you a solid place to tie off a load riding on the cover or slid in under it. Cargo that shifts forward meets steel, not glass.

Protection that keeps a low line

The trimmed frame keeps the truck sleek, easy to park and quick to read from behind the wheel, while the cover keeps the bed dry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers on specs, fit and support

Will I have to drill into my truck?

On most late-model trucks the standard and crossover toolbox kits mount with no drilling. The low-profile toolbox kit needs two holes drilled on each side of the bed rail, and trucks without front stake pockets generally need drilling.

Which installation kit do I need?

The Original Short is meant to ride on a BackRack top-of-rail tonneau adapter kit, sold separately. The kit table on this page lists the matching kit for each truck.

How is it different from the Original?

It uses the same flat bar design with shorter posts. On a tonneau adapter, the standard Original would sit well above the cab, while the Short lines up with the roof.

Do I need a tonneau cover to use it?

It is built for trucks with a cover and an adapter kit. On an open bed with a standard kit it would sit lower than the cab roof, so the standard Original is usually the better choice there.

Is a tonneau adapter available for my truck?

Not every truck has one. Check the kit table for your truck before ordering, and choose the Original with a different kit if no adapter is listed.

Is anything left out of the box?

Yes. The frame ships as a rack only. Brackets, stake pocket bolts and the adapter come in the separately sold kit.
