Features

  • Mildest of three sound levels: Borla rates Touring as its mildest sound level, below S-Type and ATAK. Borla describes it as a mild growl, only a bit more aggressive than the factory exhaust.
  • Starts behind the converters: A Cat-Back system replaces the pipes and mufflers that follow the catalytic converters. The factory converters themselves are left in place.
  • T-304 austenitic stainless: The tubing and mufflers are T-304 austenitic stainless steel, which Borla rates well above 409 or aluminized steel for resisting rust and heat.
  • Built for one vehicle: Each Touring system is engineered for a single platform, with the muffler layout, internals and pipe routing worked out for that vehicle and its engine.
  • Million-Mile Warranty: Material and workmanship defects are covered for one million miles, for the original buyer on the original vehicle. Tip finishes, coatings and moving parts carry a one-year term.
  • Tip finish for this system: This system ends in a single 4" round angle-cut phantom tip; Borla lists its finish as Bright Chrome.

Description & Fitment

This Touring cat-back from Borla (part 14659) fits the 1996-2002 Toyota 4Runner with the 2.7L 4-cyl or 3.4L V6. Borla's fit covers 2WD or 4WD, auto or manual, single cat ('96-'00) or dual cats ('01-'02). It ships with 4" round angle-cut phantom tips in bright chrome. It exits through a single exit at the right rear; Borla lists the pipe size as 2.5" and 2.25". Touring is the quietest of Borla's three sound levels, by Borla's own ranking; the build is T-304 stainless steel.

Fits vehicles with a single catalytic converter (1996-2000) and dual converters (2001-2002). Vehicles with two catalytic converters require cutting the front pipe.

About Borla

BORLA.

Borla got its start in 1978 making stainless exhaust systems for concours Rolls-Royce and Ferrari restorations, and says the term Cat-Back began with it that same year. The company still builds in stainless steel, now at a 100-acre plant in Tennessee, and Borla says automakers including GM, Ford and Toyota use it for some of their factory-installed accessory exhaust.

Borla engineers each vehicle system from a clean sheet, shaping the muffler bodies, cores and pipe routing around that one platform, and offers many of its systems in three sound levels: Touring, S-Type and ATAK. For custom work it makes ProXS universal mufflers, CrateMufflers tuned to crate engines, exhaust tips, tubing, clamps and hangers.

Authorized Borla dealer. Prestige Truck is an authorized Borla dealer, so every Borla part we sell is new and genuine. Borla's Million-Mile Warranty is for the original purchaser, on the vehicle the part was first installed on. Keep your Prestige Truck order receipt: Borla asks for proof of the purchase date with any claim, and we use it when we take a claim to Borla for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this fit my 1996-2002 4Runner 2.7L/3.4L?

Yes, if your vehicle matches this part's fitment row: 2.7L 4-cyl or 3.4L V6; 2WD or 4WD; auto or manual; single cat ('96-'00) or dual cats ('01-'02). Fits vehicles with a single catalytic converter (1996-2000) and dual converters (2001-2002). Not sure? Send us your VIN and we'll check it against Borla's listing.

What if my 4Runner doesn't match this part's row?

Borla makes other Touring cat-backs for it, matched by year, engine and cab/bed. The closest one here is 140379 (2010-2024, 4.0L V6, vehicles with the factory exhaust tip, 4.25" x 3.5" tips). The "Not for" box above lists the rest; each has its own fitment row.

How loud is Touring?

Borla rates Touring as its mildest sound level. Borla describes it as a mild growl a little more aggressive than stock, for drivers who want a better note without a loud exhaust. S-Type and ATAK are the louder steps up.

Is a Cat-Back a bigger change than an Axle-Back?

Yes. A Cat-Back replaces everything from the catalytic converters to the tips, while an Axle-Back replaces only the mufflers, piping and tips behind the rear axle. Borla says the Cat-Back gives the fuller sound and flow change of the two.

Do I need a shop to install it?

Borla's install sheets for these systems recommend an exhaust shop or professional installer, and they warn against air impact tools. Many also suggest a second person to hold the system up while it is hung. Some vehicles need the factory pipe cut; the Installation section on each product says whether yours does.

Can I send it back if I don't like the sound?

Borla does not warrant sound level, because how an exhaust sounds is a personal call, and it asks owners not to return a part for that reason. Settle on the sound level before you order. Borla notes that venturis, available from a retailer, can quiet a system later. For any other return question, contact us before you ship anything back.

Installation

Recommended installationProfessional
TypeHangs in place of the factory exhaust on the stock hangers on most vehiclessome sheets call for cutting the factory pipe
Tools
  • 3/8" drive ratchet
  • 3/8" drive extension 6"
  • 15mm deep well socket
  • 13mm deep well socket
  • Flat-blade screwdriver or Prybar
  • Reciprocating saw with metal cutting blade
  • Tape measure

Here's the short version. Follow Borla's install sheet (below) for your vehicle's exact steps.

  1. Lubricate all hangers, rubber isolators, bolts and nuts.
  2. Loosen and remove the hardware on the flange connecting the tailpipe to the rear of the muffler assembly.
  3. Using a flathead screwdriver or a prybar, remove the tailpipe hanger from its rubber isolator.
  4. Remove the tailpipe from the vehicle by moving it out of the rear of the vehicle and over the axle.
  5. Loosen and remove the hardware on the flange connecting the muffler assembly to the vehicle. You will reuse this hardware during installation.
  6. Not pictured: On vehicles before 2001 or without the California emissions exhaust, the second O2 sensor will be located on the inlet to the muffler assembly. You will need to remove the sensor and install it onto your Borla system.

Warranty, shipping & returns

  • Warranty

Borla's Million-Mile Warranty covers this part for one million miles against flaws in its materials or workmanship.
    • Coverage belongs to the original purchaser of record, on the vehicle the part was first installed on.
    • Black coatings, tip finishes, carbon fiber and moving parts such as valves and actuators carry a one-year term. Blemishes or marring caused by weather, road hazards, lack of maintenance or extreme heat or cold are not covered.
    • Borla inspects the returned part, and when it finds a manufacturing or material defect it repairs or replaces the part, at Borla's option.
    • Sound level is not warranted, since sound is a matter of taste. Borla notes that venturis can be fitted to quiet a system.
    • Universal mufflers must be joined at their inlet and outlet necks. Welding to the case shell or end caps voids the warranty.
    • Not covered: the cost of removal or reinstallation; damage from accident, abuse, misuse or misapplication; parts that are modified or used for something other than their intended purpose; racing products, and street parts used for racing.
    • To claim, contact us first with your order number and a short description of the problem. Borla asks for proof of the retail purchase date, and your Prestige Truck receipt is that proof. A part sent back to Borla travels with freight prepaid by the sender, packed well, since Borla cannot accept parts damaged in transit.
    • Some states do not allow these limits, so your rights may vary by state.

This system ships in a large carton: lay every pipe, muffler, clamp and hanger out against the install sheet's parts list before you start, and photograph any dents or scuffed tips right away. Check it as soon as it arrives.

Touring sounds great!

It’s a big jump from stock. Once it warms up the tone changes and it sounds really good. Loud when you jump on it, quiet cruising on the highway. Still quiet enough to have a phone call over Bluetooth, while loud enough to have fun when you want to.

This system is not obnoxious. No drone. Sounds great when you want it to. . . getting on the gas. Definitely recommend for those who want to hear their engine, but don't want half the neighborhood to here.

Borla touring exhaust

Quality parts and crafting. Installed on a 2015 F-150. Definite improvement in engine performance, no change in fuel economy. Not as loud as I expected it to be, which is okay, because I didn't want straight pipe/motorcycle type volume or sound; but there is a subtle throaty sound that increases with throttle. And the assurance of not having to worry about rust is a big plus. All in all, great product.

High quality exhaust, but louder than expected.

As the title states, I have absolutely zero complaints about the quality of this beautifully crafted system. It is (was), however, considerably louder than I expected for a daily driven truck. VERY loud on cold start and significantly louder than stock even feathering the throttle. Can't imagine what the S-Type and Atak sound like. I just added a Borla resonator and it is now perfect. Exactly the sound I was aiming for - moderately aggressive at part throttle, nasty at WOT and only marginally louder than stock at highway cruise. My initial buyer's remorse is long gone.

DO NOT BUY! Complete Waste of Money

DO NOT BUY THIS EXHAUST! I installed this Borla dual exhaust expecting improved performance, but the exact opposite happened. The exhaust absolutely killed my low-end torque. There is nothing more embarrassing than getting beaten off the line at a red light by a grandma driving a Corolla. Borla should be ashamed of marketing this product as a performance upgrade. In my experience, it did not improve performance whatsoever. If anything, the truck felt noticeably weaker where it mattered most—off the line and during everyday driving. The only positives I can honestly mention are a very slight improvement in V8 sound and a barely noticeable MPG increase. Unfortunately, neither came close to making up for the loss in drivability and power. I gave this exhaust every opportunity to prove itself. I ran it for several months and put thousands of miles on it, hoping I would eventually see the…

Borla touring 5.3 trail boss

This exhaust is a great addition for those who want to hear “how it SHOULD come from the factory”. Nice growl under acceleration but quiets down at cruising speed. Went with the touring because I live close to neighbors and didn’t want to wake any one up. Perfect balance of a little more sound but not obnoxious. Installed at home in driveway with no lift and hand tools. A few tools that would be helpful(sawsall, exhaust fastener remover, dw40) Overall very please and would recommend

Nice Upgrade Simple to Install But…

I love the stainless steel design and sound. The sound is great and not too loud for the size of the truck. The increase in power is noticeable in shifting (manual transmission). I am enjoying having some more acceleration. Installation was easy though had to rely on community YouTube videos. The biggest disappointment was there wasn’t a gasket provided for the connections with rise to catalytic converter. This delayed my install as now I had to figure what I needed and wait for it to come in. And after trying two different gaskets the connection leaks fluid. I recommend but Borla certainly could have thrown in a few gaskets to maintain their respected brand name. There was a free ball cap included. It’s nice material, but the fit was weird and looked silly. I gave it away and it wasn’t just my head :-)

Touring is not overly loud, just enough to not annoy the neighbors. Cold starts are slightly loud, but come down after. Only wish the package included new flange gasket and bolts - would’ve completed the package.

2023 Escalade Touring

Super fast two day delivery. Borla Quality. I had a Borla Touring cat back exhaust system on a 2018 Yukon Denali. I just installed one on my 2023 Cadillac Escalade. We had to adjust(bend) two hanger rods to fit them into the rubber hangers. Not a big deal, but time consuming. The exhaust note sounds great but it is noticeably louder than the Yukon system. Also, I hear a low RPM drone on occasion. Nice system, but not the flawless experience I had with the Yukon.

Great exhaust!

This took about an hour and a half to install in my garage. It took more time to remove the factory exhaust than it did putting in the new pieces. The fit was perfect and the mellow exhaust note is robust without being obnoxious. I'd say it is the perfect blend of snarl with a touch of brrrap at a volume that allows a casual conversation when you drive. I gave 3 stars for Bang For Your Buck along with 2 stars for Performance Gain, simply because I did not do any dyno comparisons before and after for a true answer. I feel everything these days is over priced, but this system is the industry standard and as such, is a respectable price for the product you get. There is just enough of a gain under full throttle to notice an improvement. Pairing it with a cold air intake and throttle spacer, I feel would make a substantial gain and adding large diameter long tube headers would put the 5.7…

Very Loud in the Cabin

Considering that this is the Touring version, it is quite loud in the cabin. Even with the slightest acceleration it is almost impossible to have a conversation while driving. A long trip would give everyone a headache for sure. Sounds good on the outside but inside gets zero stars. If you're looking for slightly more rumble than stock, this is not it. Currently looking for a way to tone it down but there really is no room to add any components such as a resonator. Also looking for a different system but seriously considering going back to stock. Looks great, easy to install and the quality is high. However, I'm very disappointed with the sound level.

Wow...looks and sounds great

Recently installed the Borla Touring exhaust on my brand new 2022 Ram Limited. For anyone wondering if this system is loud enough of if they should move up to the S-Type, I can confidently say this thing is a beast. Unless your nearest neighbor is a half mile away or you want your truck to sound like a top fuel dragster, the Touring provides more than enough grunt. Even inside the cab with music at a comfortable listening level, mild acceleration is quite throaty. Anything more would sound ridiculous, particularly if you plan on being seen in professional settings or dropping your kids off at school. From an installation standpoint, the hardest part is getting the factory exhaust off. The rubber isolators are always a pain in the ass, even with a brand new vehicle. That said, all the reviews and installation instructions you see say that you'll need to cut the factory exhaust to get it…

This is what your looking for!

I had the borla touring cat back installed on my 2021 ram etorque and she is awesome. If your the family guy just looking for that “muscle in your hustle” then this is exactly what your looking for. Nice deep throaty Growl but think low-medium volume. Don’t be put off by reviews that say you can barley hear it because that is not true. Most are looking for exhaust that have the volume all the way UP sound. Plus borla sound is rear directed to keep cabin noise to none. So even if you don’t hear that awesome tone super loud inside, trust me everyone else outside can hahaha. Think high end sport luxury tone. It’s a winner you won’t regret it.

Borla Touring Exhaust

I'm rating 5 stars across the board as I am very pleased with the Borla System. Quality materials throughout, and it installed perfectly with all of the hangers and clamps in all of the right places. The exhaust note is louder, but very reasonable and quite pleasing. My wife even says it sounds sweet. She said it gives the truck a "nice throaty snarl." Performance gain is hard to measure. MPG seems a little better, but most of my miles recently have included pulling a trailer. This is where the exhaust note can get on the aggressive side. For example, when pulling the family camper with the whole crew loaded up, the truck obviously works harder and spends more time in 7th gear. This happens to land my RPMs at about 2000-2200 which can get slightly, well, loud for extended periods of time. It's tolerable, but I may end up adding the Borla resonator to dampen it down. Bottom line, sweet…

Loud!

For Borla’s “quietest” exhaust, this exhaust is LOUD. It may be louder than normal with my S&B CAI. Cold starts will be heard by neighbors and the constant rumble is heard on the highway. Don’t get me wrong, this sounds mean and bad ass, just a bit louder than I was expecting. I can’t even imagine how loud the S-Line and the Attak are. I had to cut my original exhaust to get it out. I did this in my driveway with jack stands. Besides the cutting, it was a smooth installation. Get a hangar removal tool 100%. The tips look great.
