- Machined wrap-around jaws: B&W machines the jaws to fit the king pin closely, leaving no room for slop between pin and jaw, so the trailer has less to bang against when you start and stop.
- Cam-action handle: A cam in the handle does the locking. With the handle shut, the cam holds the jaws locked on the king pin so they cannot let go by accident. Swing it open and the cam moves aside, freeing the jaws to let go of the pin when the truck drives forward.
- Shock absorber and bushings: A shock absorber lets the coupler shift side to side without banging, and polyurethane bushings under the coupler absorb rough pavement. A smooth ride was B&W's stated goal for the design.
- Two-piece design: Base and coupler head come apart. Pull the two saddle lock pins and the head lifts off the pivot arms by the handles on either side, which makes the base easier to remove or swap.
- Rated by B&W: B&W rates this Companion for 20,000 lb gross trailer weight and 5,000 lb pin weight. Know your truck's own towing rating too, and never tow past the lower of the two.
- Built and tested in Kansas: B&W builds the Companion in Humboldt, Kansas, and certifies its fifth wheel hitches to SAE J2638, the industry standard for fifth wheel and gooseneck hitches.
Description & Fitment
RVK3500 is B&W's Companion Single-Point Fifth Wheel Hitch. Its rating: 20,000 lb GTW, 5,000 lb on the king pin. Instead of rails, a single post fits the socket of a B&W Turnoverball gooseneck hitch, latched from the wheel well and drawn down with a bolt. Inside: base RVB3500 and coupler head RVC3006. B&W lists nine pivot-arm positions and an 18-1/4" top coupler height.
Fitment & Compatibility
Check your fit: your truck has a B&W Turnoverball gooseneck hitch installed: the base post drops into its socket. On a Toyota Tundra with a composite bed (Turnoverball GNRK1222), B&W's sheet says to remove the base's polyurethane pads. B&W's GNRK1257 page says only an RVK3500 with a special post works with that hitch: contact us before you order for a GNRK1257.
Not for: wedge-style or pivot-moving pin box couplers: B&W says not to use them with the single-point Companion. Other single-point Companions: RVK3405 (20K, slider). Not included: B&W's vinyl hitch cover RVXA3112 fits this model and is sold separately.
About B&W Trailer Hitches
Roger Baker and Joe Works founded B&W Trailer Hitches in 1987, working out of a garage where they built custom truck beds; the company name comes from their initials. Customers wanted a gooseneck ball that would not sit welded in the middle of the bed, and their answer was the Turnoverball: it mounts beneath the bed, and the ball flips over to stow in the same hole it tows from. The Companion fifth wheel hitch came next and uses the same under-bed mounting.
B&W still builds its hitches in Humboldt, Kansas, from American-made steel, and Joe Works began handing the company to its workers in 2007; today it is employee-owned. B&W counts itself among the few hitch makers still building in America.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does RVK3500 mount to?
The socket of a B&W Turnoverball gooseneck hitch. It latches from the wheel well and a draw-down bolt tightens it, so it fits a hitch rather than a specific truck.
Can I use a wedge-style pin box with it?
No. B&W warns that a wedge device loads that one attachment point hard enough to damage the hitch, up to outright failure. B&W allows wedge pin boxes only on its puck-mounted and rail-mounted models.
Do I need a lube plate?
No. B&W says the lube disc is up to you: it is cleaner, but a coat of automotive chassis grease on the hitch's top plate does the same job.
Why won't the jaws open when I pull the handle?
On uneven ground the king pin can bind slightly in the jaws, which B&W calls normal. With the handle open, the jaw tension is released even if the jaws do not visibly open, and they let go as you pull away.
Will it work with my short bed truck?
Many short bed owners tow with a Companion, B&W says. Cab clearance depends on where the king pin sits on the trailer, the trailer's width and corner shape, and how much tight turning you do. The slider models slide back 12" for that turning room.
Can I buy the base or coupler head on its own?
Yes. B&W uses the same coupler head (RVC3006) across the Companion line, so the base and the head are each sold separately, in fixed and slider versions.
Installation
Here's the short version. Follow B&W's install sheet (below) for the exact positions and hardware.
- Clean the truck bed, remove the polyurethane pads (not compatible with the bed), attach the two plastic foot pads and check the socket adjuster spacer.
- Choose the socket post orientation for the bed rib pattern and attach the socket post into the center of the base.
- Disengage the Turnoverball latch pin (driver-side fender well), lift the base into the gooseneck hitch socket and square the base legs with the bed ribs.
- Secure the base: tighten the eight 1/2" socket-post cap screws to 80 ft-lbs, then the 1/2" x 3" draw-down bolt to 60 ft-lbs.
- Mount the pivot arms in one of the nine locations (Table D1) with the four threaded blocks, eight 1/2" x 2" cap screws and lock washers; torque each bolt to 110 ft-lbs and check truck-to-trailer clearance.
- Attach the leveling kit, lubricate the pivot-arm bushings with lithium grease, place the coupler, attach the coupler handle with the 3/8" button head cap screws and lock nuts, and set the coupler angle.

Before you install, check the base and coupler bolt bags against the parts lists on B&W's sheet for your model, and work the handle to confirm the jaws lock closed and release before your first hookup. Check it as soon as it arrives.- Look for crushed ends, punctures or tears in the carton.
- If something looks wrong, take photos of the box and the parts (and if a driver asks you to sign, note the damage on the receipt).
