What generation two changed

TruXport's SureTension mechanism is a spring inside the cover that keeps the vinyl pulled flat on its own, through cold mornings and hot afternoons, with nothing for anyone to reach for. Generation two kept that and rebuilt the rest around it: a grab handle at each rear corner so the cover opens from whichever side you happen to be standing on, TruGuide controls that keep the roll traveling straight, and stronger clamps and bolts underneath.

Roll it back, load it up

Release the handle, run the cover forward to the cab and clip both retainer straps, and the box is open over its whole length. That is the difference between lifting a load over the side rail and dropping it straight in over the tailgate, and it takes one hand and a few seconds in either direction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers on specs, fit and support

Does it keep the bed dry in bad weather?

It sheds rain and snow well. No TruXedo product is described as waterproof by the company that builds it, so we are not going to describe this one that way either, and the brand's own safety notes go further: the cover is not airtight, and anything in the box that has to stay clean and dry needs looking after. In an ordinary shower the vinyl and the corner seals do their job. Leave it out in a long, heavy storm, or point a pressure washer at the seal line, and some damp finds a way through, which is true of every soft roll-up on the market. Put anything that genuinely cannot get wet into a bag or a case first.

Why does water sit on top of the cover after it rains?

Because the bows underneath are built to lie flat rather than to arch, and that flatness is where the low, level look of the closed cover comes from. TruXedo publishes the answer itself: a puddle after heavy rain is normal, and it runs off once the truck is moving. If it sits deeper than you like, go back along both side rails and press the hook-and-loop home again. A surface pulled properly tight leaves the water far less room to gather.

Will it stay latched at highway speed?

It will once the rails are set right, and this is the one part of the fit worth taking time over. The tailgate header hooks into a stop on each side and two latches engage on their own, each with an audible click, and both have to click. If a latch will not catch, the rails are almost always too far apart, too close, or not level front to back. Set them so the header sits about 1/16" clear of each rail, then close the cover and press the hook-and-loop down the full length of both sides with the flat of your hand. Redo that step every time you close it and part way through a long trip, because a lifted edge at the rail is what lets wind get under the cover.

Does fitting it mean drilling holes in the truck?

For almost the whole TruXport range, no. The rails clamp onto the bed, nothing gets cut or permanently changed, and the cover comes straight back off when you sell the truck. One part is the exception and you should hear it from us rather than find it in the box: the version built for the Ram 1500 with the RamBox cargo system, part number 284901. That one bolts to the truck's own cargo rails, and the sheet TruXedo writes for it puts a 5/8" drill bit and drill on its required tools list. If that is your truck, its page spells this out under Installation and links the sheet so you can read it first. Nothing else in the range needs a drill.

Does the TruXport lock?

No. It latches shut at the tailgate, and with the tailgate itself locked the box is closed off from a casual hand, but the top is vinyl and there is no lock in it. TruXedo puts the same warning in its own safety notes: a tonneau cover will not stop someone taking what is in the box. If locking the bed is the reason you are shopping, the models to look at are the Sentry and the Sentry CT, which are hard covers with a proper key. Paying less here and knowing exactly what you get is a fair trade; being surprised by it later is not.

What does the 5-year warranty actually cover, and what ends it?

Five years on the hard parts, five years on the fabric, against faults in material or workmanship, held by whoever bought it first and only where it came from a dealer TruXedo recognizes. Keep the dated receipt. What ends the term early is a short, specific list. Wash it with mild automotive soap and water and a soft brush, and keep conditioners away from the vinyl, since a conditioner shrinks it; an automatic car wash, unusually, is allowed. Never set off with the cover half open, and buckle both straps when it is rolled at the cab. Never stand anything on it or tie a load to its framework. And leave the latch assembly as it arrives, because it is set at the factory and adjusting it cancels the cover.
