Fewer parts, fewer things to fail

The Select is the plainest cover UnderCover builds, and that is the point of it. There is no specialty coating on the panel face and nothing on the outside to lose: multi-layer aircraft-grade aluminum, a fade-resistant matte black finish, automatic dual slam latches that lock as each panel comes down, and a single cable pull at either side of the tailgate to release them. The trade for the price is honest and worth knowing before you buy. It is rated to 300 lb evenly distributed where every other cover in the folding range carries 400 lb, and its three year term is matched only by the Flex, with the two covers at the top of the range running to five. Everything else about how it fits, seals and opens is the same idea executed more simply.

Nothing on the outside to pick

The Select carries no external locks or latches at all, and UnderCover treats that as a security feature rather than an omission. There is no cylinder to drill, no handle to lever and nothing on the panel face that announces the cover can be opened. The dual slam latches engage automatically as the cover closes and the release cables sit inside the bed, so the whole thing is only reachable with the tailgate down. That makes the tailgate lock the part that matters: lock the tailgate and the bed is shut.

Straight answers on specs, fit and support

Will it keep my bed dry in heavy rain?

It keeps most weather out, and UnderCover does not call it waterproof. Flush-fitting side seals close the perimeter and integrated drain rails carry water away from the bed rather than into it, with drain tubes routed out of the bed at install. In a long downpour or at a jet wash, expect a little water to reach the bulkhead corners and the joints between panels, because a folding cover has seams a one-piece lid does not. Treat it as highly water-resistant and keep anything that genuinely must stay dry in a sealed box. The drain path is built in precisely because the design assumes some water gets past the seals.

How hard is the install, and do I have to drill?

Nothing is drilled into the truck to mount the cover on any Select application. UnderCover rates it Level 1 at 30 minutes or less: a vehicle-specific mounting kit locates the side rails, the rails clamp to the inside of your bed rails, and the cover sits on the rails. Drilling, where it appears, is only ever for the drain tubes. On most trucks the tubes drop through existing bed plugs or run behind a liner, but every Toyota application in this family does require drilling a hole for the drain, and the Jeep Gladiator part has a mandatory step that cuts a marked section out of the plastic bed cap. That cut is permanent, so it is worth knowing before you order. Work from the installation sheet in the carton rather than a film, because the clamp positions, torque figure and drain routing change from truck to truck.

How does it behave in snow and ice?

Clear it before you fold it back. UnderCover's Select sheet makes that a condition rather than a suggestion: the cover must be free of all foreign materials, snow and ice included, before opening, and forcing frozen panels apart is how hinges and seals get torn. Weather damage is excluded from the warranty. Closed, the panels will carry a snow load within the 300 lb evenly distributed rating, which is lower than the covers above it in the range and worth respecting on a wide bed. Rubber stiffens in deep cold like any rubber, so a cover that has sat frozen overnight will feel tighter than it does in July. UnderCover publishes no operating temperature range for the Select and we are not going to invent one.

Can I lock it, and will the latches catch on a bed that is not square?

There is no key. The Select is built with no external locks or latches by design, so security comes from the dual slam latches, which lock automatically as the cover closes, combined with a locked tailgate. With the tailgate up there is no way in and no cylinder to attack; with the tailgate down the cover opens. If that is not the security model you want, this is the wrong cover in the range. On squareness: the rear latch only engages if the side rails sit at 90 degrees to your bed rails, and the Select installation sheet prints that warning in capitals on most applications. A latch that will not catch is almost always a rail that is not square, so check the rails first. UnderCover also asks you to re-check every clamp and retention mechanism after about a week of driving and periodically after that.

Will it clear my bed rails, bedliner, rail caps or cargo lights?

The part number decides it, so read the qualifier in this listing's title before ordering. UnderCover builds separate Select parts for beds with the Toyota Deck Rail System and for GM beds with factory bed rail caps, and the part for one will not fit the other. Beyond that, the side rails clamp to the inside of your bed rails, so a drop-in liner with a lip folded over the rail, aftermarket rail caps or anything bolted along the inner bed rail can foul a clamp, and drain tubes have to route past or through a liner. Some applications also exclude a factory option outright, such as a RamBox, factory sport bars or a CarbonPro bed, and the fit guidance on this page spells out which. UnderCover publishes no clearance dimension, so if you run bed-rail accessories or cargo lights, measure what sits inside your bed rails before you order.

How much does it weigh, and can I take it off on my own?

Every Select application ships at about 70 lb packaged, the same figure on all 45 parts regardless of bed length. That is the carton: UnderCover publishes no weight for the cover on its own, so the cover itself is lighter than the number you see. One person can manage the folded stack on a short bed, though the awkward part is lifting it over the bed rail rather than the weight itself, and two people turn it into a short job on any bed. One honest caveat on removal: UnderCover publishes no tool-free removal claim for the Select, so do not assume it lifts off in seconds the way its quick-release sibling is sold. The side rails stay clamped to the truck once fitted, so taking the cover off for a bulky load is not the same job as a full uninstall.
