Truck Bed Drawers or a Tool Box: Which One?

Both keep tools in the truck and both lock. Where they differ is what happens the fiftieth time you go looking for something, and that is the difference worth buying on.

Which One Should You Buy?

Drawers if you retrieve individual tools all day, a tool box if you move a kit in and out and want the largest locked space for the money. Drawers win on access and lose on capacity per dollar. A box wins on bulk storage and loses every time you have to find one specific item.

Access Is the Real Difference

A crossover box asks you to lean over the bed rail and reach down into a deep body, usually with one hand holding the lid clear. Whatever is at the bottom is out of sight and out of reach without climbing in.

A drawer slides the entire contents out to the tailgate at waist height. You see everything at once, take one item and close it. Over a working week the time difference is substantial, and so is the number of tools that stop going missing.

Bed Space Is Taken From Different Places

A crossover box takes the front of the bed and the height above the rails. A drawer unit takes floor length and leaves the rails clear.

  • Crossover box: front of the bed, blocks the rear window unless low profile.
  • Drawer unit: floor length, keeps the rails free for a rack or a cover.
  • Wheel well box: takes neither, at the cost of smaller capacity.
  • Underbed box: takes nothing in the bed, needs mounting into structure.

Security Compares Closely

Both lock, and both are more about deterrence than defeating a determined attempt. A tool box mounted high on the rails is the more visible target, while a drawer unit under a closed cover is behind two barriers rather than one.

If security is the deciding factor, a low profile box or a drawer unit under a hard cover is stronger than either item alone.

Cost per Cubic Foot Favours the Box

A tool box is a body and a lid. A drawer unit is a body, a lid, slides, bearings and a locking mechanism, and all of that costs money and eats interior volume. Expect to pay more for less usable space when you buy drawers, and treat the difference as the price of the access rather than as poor value.

Running Both

Plenty of service trucks do, and it works well because they solve different problems. The box takes the expensive and occasional items at the bulkhead, the drawer unit takes everything you touch daily along the floor.

Decide which is doing bulk storage before ordering, since both want the front of the bed. Compare drawer units against crossover boxes, or see the full tool box range.
