Weather Guard 65 in Heavy-Duty Sliding Truck Bed, 2,000 lb, Matte Black (SB65-52-01)

Truck Bed Slide Weight Capacity Explained

A bed slide brings the whole load out to you rather than making you climb over the tailgate. The rating on the box is the first thing people compare and the thing most often misread.

What Does the Rating Mean?

It is the load the platform carries while it is supported, and it is a static figure. A slide rated at 2,000 lb is not promising that 2,000 lb behaves the same way fully extended as it does closed, because the leverage on the runners changes completely as the platform comes out.

Extended Load Is the Number That Matters

When the slide is out, the load sits on the cantilevered end of the runners rather than over the full length of the bed. The further out it goes, the more the mounting hardware is being levered upward at the front.

  • Load heavy items toward the cab end of the platform.
  • Do not stand or sit on an extended slide unless it is rated for it.
  • Extend fully only when you need to, and retract before driving.
  • Check the locking mechanism holds in both the open and closed positions.

How Much Actually Extends

Most slides extend around two thirds to three quarters of their length, which is what puts the far end of the load within reach. That is the practical benefit, and it is worth measuring against your own bed and how you park.

Sizes commonly run around 65 inches and 75 inches to suit short and long beds. Match the slide length to the clear floor length rather than to the advertised bed size, since a bulkhead box or a drawer unit takes some of that away.

Mounting Takes the Load

Whatever the platform is rated for, the fasteners into the bed floor carry it. Use the mounting kit supplied, use backing plates and check what runs under the floor before drilling, because fuel and brake lines are not always where you expect.

The bed floor itself is thin sheet over supports. Fixings should land on the supports where possible, and every fixing should be checked again after the first month of use.

Grit is the other thing that shortens a slide's life. The runners sit at bed floor level where sand and road salt collect, so a rinse and a wipe along the rails a few times a year keeps the action smooth and stops the bearings picking up debris.

Where a Slide Fits Your Build

A slide and a drawer unit solve the same access problem in different ways. A slide moves everything out at once and suits bulky items, while drawers sort smaller things and stay lighter. A slide also works well under a tonneau cover, since the platform clears the bed rails.
