Puck Adjustments For RAM Trucks

RAM's factory puck system has adjustment that owners routinely miss, and getting it wrong makes the base feel loose. B&W's film covers what to check on a RAM bed before you blame the hitch.

Turning Clearance And When You Need A Slider

B&W walks through how much room a trailer actually needs between its nose and the back of the cab in a tight turn, and how to work out whether your truck and trailer combination needs the sliding version of the hitch. Worth confirming with a tape measure before you order, because cab-to-nose clearance is what decides whether a slider is the right call.

Installing A Head Leveling Kit

If your trailer sits nose-high or nose-low on the hitch, a head leveling kit is the fix. B&W shows what the kit does and how it goes on, which is worth understanding before you start shimming anything.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers on specs, fit and support

How much can it tow?

B&W rates it at 20,000 lb gross trailer weight with 5,000 lb vertical pin weight. Those are the hitch's numbers. What you can actually tow is the lowest of the hitch rating, your truck's own fifth wheel rating on the door jamb, and, on a rail-mounted hitch, the rails underneath it. Pin weight is the part people forget: a fifth wheel puts roughly 20% of the trailer's weight straight down onto the truck, so check that figure against your truck's payload as well as its tow rating.

What do I need in the truck before this will mount?

You need a Ram with the factory towing prep package, the one that leaves four pucks in the bed. Look in the bed. If there are four pucks flush in the floor, you have it. If not, the truck needs rails or a B&W under-bed system, and this hitch will not mount to either.

Can I tow with it slid back?

No. The 12" of travel is for maneuvering at low speed, and you should tow with the hitch locked forward. Slid back, the pin weight sits behind the rear axle, which changes the way the truck steers and brakes. Slide it back to turn tight, then lock it forward again before you get back on the road.

How heavy is it, and can I get it in and out on my own?

It ships at about 267 lb, which is more than most people want to lift in one go. The design accounts for that: the coupler lifts off the base by pulling up on the two saddle handles, with no tools, so you move it in two pieces. Most owners take the coupler out and leave the base in, or take both out for a completely clear bed.

What maintenance does it need?

Grease the saddle through the grease zerk about every six months so the coupler keeps pivoting freely, keep the jaws greased with a multi-purpose chassis grease, and either grease the top face of the coupler or run a nylon lube plate on it. Check the pinned and bolted connections before every tow and look for cracks or damage. That is the whole routine.

Why buy this over a rail-mounted hitch?

The bed. A rail-mounted hitch leaves two rails bolted through your bed floor for as long as you own the truck. This one lifts out and leaves the floor flat, which is the difference between a truck that tows and a truck that also hauls. Rail hitches are cheaper, and B&W builds those too as the Patriot line if that trade suits you better.
