The SE lid closes onto the bed caps rather than down inside the bed rails, so from the side it reads as a low continuous line from the bulkhead to the back of the tailgate with nothing standing proud but the lock knob. Shallow styling creases run the length of the lid to stiffen it and shed water. Because the lid covers the rails themselves, the bed caps are under cover too, and the closed truck presents a single black surface rather than a cover sitting in a frame.

Will my tailgate open while the cover is closed?
No. The SE lid sits over the bed caps and across the tailgate, so a closed and locked lid holds the tailgate shut. That is how one key ends up securing the entire bed, and it is also the thing that catches out people coming from a folding cover. The sequence becomes unlock, lift the lid on its struts, then drop the tailgate. If you need the tailgate to work with the cover still closed, look at a folding cover instead, because no one-piece lid in this range behaves that way.
Do I have to drill anything to fit it?
No. Not one of UnderCover's installation sheets for the one-piece covers calls for a drill, and the brackets clamp and bolt to the inside of the bed with the supplied hardware. What the sheets do call for is a second person to lift the lid onto the truck, and on a truck with a plastic drop-in bedliner, minor trimming of the liner so the brackets seat flat. That trimming is done to the liner and never to the mounting hardware, because modified hardware voids the warranty. Several platforms also have their own steps, so work from the sheet in the carton rather than from a video.
Does it lock, and does it use my truck key?
It locks with a low-profile single-point mechanism worked from a knob on the top surface of the lid, and UnderCover supplies two keys with it. It is not keyed to your truck and cannot be matched to the factory key. One turn locks the whole lid, and because the lid overlaps the tailgate, that turn also holds the tailgate closed. Keep the spare key out of the truck, because the spare in the glovebox is no use when the bed is what you have locked.
Will it sit flush, or should I expect gaps at the tailgate?
It sits on top of the bed caps and over the tailgate, so it reads as flush along the rails rather than recessed into them. Where fit complaints come from on a rigid lid, they are usually a bracket measurement problem rather than a manufacturing one: the sheet gives an exact figure from the bulkhead to each bracket and getting that wrong moves the whole lid fore or aft. Measure both sides before tightening anything, and check the figure against the sheet for your truck rather than against a sibling part, because the numbers differ by platform. On some platforms the kit also includes rubber filler strips that go between the bed rail cap and the rail, and leaving them out changes how the lid sits.
Will it keep the bed dry in heavy rain, snow and ice?
It keeps most weather out, and UnderCover does not call the SE waterproof or publish a seal specification for it. A one-piece lid has no panel seams, which is the main structural advantage over a folding cover in the wet, and the lid's perimeter runs in a seal channel against the bed rail. In sustained heavy rain or at a jet wash expect some water at the bulkhead corners, so keep anything that must stay dry in a sealed container. In winter, clear snow off the lid before opening it rather than lifting a loaded lid, and give stiff seals a moment in deep cold.
How much does it weigh, and can I take it off on my own?
UnderCover publishes no weight for the SE lid on its own, and we are not going to print the shipping carton's figure as if it were the product's. The practical answer is in UnderCover's own sheet, which tells you to set the lid on the truck with assistance: it is a full-bed rigid panel, so two people is the sensible way to lift it on or off regardless of the number on a scale. The brackets stay bolted to the truck when the lid comes off, and the kit includes two J-hooks and wall mounting screws so the lid can hang on a garage wall instead of leaning against one.
