Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers on specs, fit and support

How many dogs does the DB-4848 carry?

Two, in separate compartments behind two doors, with a divider fitted between them. The box is 48" by 48" and 24" tall, rated by UWS at 32ft³.

Is it ventilated?

Yes, this is UWS's southern style. The sides are open vertical slats, and UWS's own description of the design is that the wider space between the rungs allows increased airflow, which helps keep temperatures down inside. The trade-off is that it gives less shelter from wind and snow than the enclosed northern-style box.

Will it fit my truck?

The box is 48" by 48", so it drops into a full-size bed comfortably. On a mid-size truck it is tight to impossible; this one really wants a full-size bed. There is no vehicle-specific mounting kit, so it sits on the bed floor and you secure it yourself.

How is it secured in the bed?

That is up to you, and it is not optional. UWS supplies no bed mounting kit, so run ratchet straps to the bed's tie-down points or bolt the box through the bed floor. A 73.6 lb box with a dog in it must not be able to slide or tip under braking.

What is the rail on top for?

It is a welded aluminum rail that UWS describes as a sturdy tie-down anchor for securing other cargo. In practice it turns the roof of the box into usable space for a crate, a cooler or a bag of decoys, and it gives you something solid to hook a strap to.

How does it ship, and can one person handle it?

It ships by freight (LTL) at a shipping weight of 73.6 lb, so expect a truck and a delivery appointment. At 73.6 lb it is a two-person lift into a bed. Aluminum keeps it far lighter than an equivalent steel box, but it is still an awkward shape on your own.
