BAKFlip MX4 Warranty: What It Covers, How Long and How to Claim

How we made this guide: picks and specs come from our catalog and fitment data, owner quotes come from verified reviews and the guide was drafted with AI help, then checked and edited by Trevor Hall.

The BAKFlip MX4 has a 5-year limited warranty. It covers structural defects in material and workmanship from the retail purchase date, and it applies to the original purchaser only. If you are buying one, the MX4 starts at $1,199.99 in our range.

The warranty does not cover damage from accidents, neglect, misuse, improper installation, modifications or normal wear and tear. Keep your dated receipt, because BAK asks for it with every claim.

Quick answer

  • Length: 5 years on the MX4 and the Revolver X4s, 3 years on the BAKFlip G2 and the FiberMax.
  • Covered: defects in material and workmanship. BAK decides whether to repair or replace.
  • Not covered: accidents, neglect, misuse, improper installation or servicing, modifications, normal wear and tear or damage from not following the care instructions.
  • Who it protects: the original purchaser. It does not pass to the next owner of the truck.
  • To claim: BAK's online form asks for your order number, contact details, truck year, make and model, the product name or part number, a description, a copy of the receipt and photos.

How long is the BAKFlip MX4 warranty?

Five years from the retail date of purchase. That is longer than the term on the BAKFlip G2 and FiberMax, which carry 3 years. The table below shows the BAK covers we carry where the term is confirmed.

BAK cover Type Warranty From Owner rating
BAKFlip MX4 Hard folding 5 years $1,199.99 4.6 (5,025 reviews)
BAK Revolver X4s Hard roll-up 5 years $1,399.99 4.6 (1,492 reviews)
BAKFlip F1 (discontinued, while supplies last) Hard folding 5 years $1,349.99 4.6 (544 reviews)
BAKFlip G2 Hard folding 3 years $1,099.99 4.6 (1,589 reviews)
BAKFlip FiberMax Hard folding 3 years $1,249.99 4.7 (320 reviews)

Some product listings show 3 years for the MX4 in a spec field, but BAK's own warranty table lists the MX4 at 5 years. If you see a different term, go by BAK's warranty paperwork in the box.

What the warranty covers

BAK warrants the cover to be structurally free from defects in material and workmanship. If a panel, rail, latch or clamp fails because it was made wrong, that is the kind of problem the warranty exists for. BAK decides whether to repair the part or replace it.

Check fit for your truck

Think of three kinds of fault that fit this wording:

  • A cracked or broken part that arrives or fails in normal use, such as a latch housing or a prop-rod clip.
  • A seal that is the wrong length or comes apart from its panel.
  • Rails or panels that do not line up because of how they were built.

The wording is about defects, not about how happy you are with the result. A cover that works as designed but lets a few drips through in a hard rain is a different matter, and we cover it in the waterproof section below.

What the warranty does not cover

BAK's terms exclude damage caused by accidents, neglect, misuse, improper installation or servicing, modifications, normal wear and tear and acts of nature. The warranty is void if the care instructions are not followed. A few practical points follow from that.

  • Install mistakes: rails that were not squared up or clamps that were never retightened count as installation problems, not defects.
  • Heavy loads: the MX4 is rated for 400 lb evenly distributed on the closed cover. A load that shifted and dented a panel is unlikely to qualify.
  • Wear: seals age with sun, cleaning chemicals and use. If a seal has simply worn out after years of service, expect BAK to treat it as wear and ask them before you assume it is covered.
  • Care: BAK's warranty text says not following the care and use instructions voids it. Wash with mild automotive soap and water, keep the cover secured while driving, recheck the clamps about a week after install and then from time to time, clear snow and ice before you open it and do not tow the truck from the rear with the cover on.

The warranty is also nontransferable. If you sell the truck, the cover's warranty does not go with it.

Do you need to register the warranty?

BAK says its warranty needs either a registration on file or proof of original purchase in the form of a detailed, dated receipt. The safest route is to do both. Register soon after install and file the receipt somewhere you will find it in four years.

One FiberMax owner says the paper in the box told him to register online within 2 weeks or lose the warranty. We could not confirm that deadline from BAK's policy, so treat it as one owner's report. The cost of registering right away is a few minutes.

“Delivery was great; packaging was superior; data plate (box) info was perfect for warranty registration purpose; instructions were easy; installation (even for 70 year old) was fast & simple; alignment, sealing & mechanisms were true; ease of utilization is exactly right for me.”

How to file a BAKFlip warranty claim

BAK takes claims through the warranty claim form on its website. Gather the details first and the process goes faster. Do not ship anything back to BAK until it authorizes the return, because BAK refuses returns it has not approved.

  1. Find your order number and the dated receipt.
  2. Write down your truck's year, make, model and bed length.
  3. Note the product name and part number. Keep the box label or photograph it: one FiberMax owner found the data plate on the box had what he needed to register.
  4. Photograph the problem from two angles, plus a wider shot of the cover on the truck.
  5. Describe what happened in a few plain sentences: when it started, what you were doing and what you have already tried.
  6. Send it all through the claim form on BAK's warranty page and keep a copy of everything you send.

Owner reports show that results vary. One Revolver owner says BAK answered an online request right away and sent a replacement cover. One MX4 owner says customer service replaced pieces damaged in shipping quickly. Another MX4 owner says a replacement corner piece never arrived after a phone call.

“We put in an online warranty request, BAK got back to us right away and will be shipping out a new cover to put on the rails.”

“A couple of pieces were damaged in shipping and customer service replaced them quickly.”

If a missing or broken part is the problem, say so plainly and ask for that part. Several MX4 owners report needing repeated requests before the right part showed up, so keep a dated list of what you asked for.

What owners say needs fixing

The MX4 averages 4.6 stars across 5,025 reviews, and 92% of them give 4 or 5 stars. Look at the 17 reviews at 3 stars or below in our sample of 200 and the complaints split three ways: 6 mention leaks, 7 mention fit or install trouble and 7 mention small parts that are loose or broken (some name more than one).

The unhappy owners mostly point at a seal, a rail or a plastic clip, not a cover that failed outright. Fixing those usually means a replacement part rather than a whole new cover.

What you see Usual reason Your move BAK claim?
Water along the rails or rattles Clamps loose or rails not square Square the rails, snug every clamp and check again after a few drives No, install errors are excluded
Water at the tailgate Tailgate seal sitting crooked Press the seal back so it meets the gate evenly Yes if the seal is defective
Water at the cab end Front seal too short or drain tubes kinked Move the seal into place, then clear and straighten the tubes Yes for a short seal
Drips at panel joints in heavy rain Normal for folding covers Keep sensitive cargo in a sealed tote No
Cracked clip, bumper or corner trim Part broken on arrival or in use Photograph it and ask BAK for the part Yes if it is a defect

The first row is the one owners can fix themselves, and it costs nothing. Drain tubes are the other do-it-yourself job. Check that they are not kinked or pinched by a bed liner, and clear them of debris. A defective seal or a cracked part is the kind of problem to send to BAK.

Are BAKFlip tonneau covers waterproof?

No. Like every folding cover, a BAKFlip is water-resistant, not waterproof. EPDM seals, a dual-action tailgate seal and drain tubes keep out most rain, and many owners report dry beds. Others report water at the seams in hard rain.

“I have been through car washes with only a few drips inside.”

BAKFlip MX4 owner · 5 out of 5 stars

“Was hopeful this wouldn't be the case with the integrated drainage system, but it leaks around all the edges & between panels.”

BAKFlip MX4 owner · 2 out of 5 stars

Drips at the seams do not by themselves make the cover defective, because no folding cover is watertight storage. If your cargo cannot get wet, put it in a sealed bin. If a seal is plainly short or out of its channel, that is a claim. For a deeper look at which covers keep the bed driest, read our guide to waterproof tonneau covers.

Can you drive with a BAKFlip partially open?

On covers with buckle straps, BAK builds in a part-open position. The BAKFlip FiberMax and F1 fold two-thirds open on nylon buckle straps, and the G2 spec says you can drive closed, folded or flipped up. The MX4 has nylon straps that buckle to clips on the panels, which owners use to hold it part open. Prop rods hold the folded stack against the cab for the full bed. BAK's care instructions say to keep the cover secured while driving, so only drive part open with the straps or prop rods done up.

Not following the care instructions voids the warranty, so follow the paperwork that came with your cover. An F1 owner reports good results with the straps.

“I have driven with the cover partially and fully open without any difficulties.”

BAKFlip F1 owner · 5 out of 5 stars

The F1 is listed by BAK as discontinued from June 2026 and is sold while supplies last. BAK names no successor. We suggest the MX4, or the FiberMax if you want a fiberglass top.

Does the newest MX4 change the warranty picture?

No. BAK's warranty table lists the current MX4 at 5 years, the same as before. What changed is the cover itself: the MX4 sold today is the third generation. BAK describes stronger panels than the first MX4, redesigned latch parts and new EPDM seals with tight-fit clamps. It also lists a longer tailgate seal and reworked prop-rod clips, both aimed at things earlier owners grumbled about.

One owner of the new design says the ribbed tailgate seal sits less snugly than the old one and lets in a little water. Check that the seal is seated right after install. A badly seated seal is a quick fix, so rule it out before you decide the cover is defective.

Frequently asked questions

What is the BAKFlip warranty?

It is a limited warranty from BAK against defects in material and workmanship. The MX4, F1 and Revolver X4s carry 5 years and the G2 and FiberMax carry 3 years. It covers the original purchaser only.

Is the BAKFlip MX4 warranty transferable?

No. BAK states the warranty applies to the original purchaser only. If you sell the truck, the next owner does not inherit the coverage.

What do I need to make a BAKFlip warranty claim?

A dated receipt, your order number, the product name or part number, your truck's year, make and model, a description of the problem and photos. Registration on file also helps.

Does the warranty cover leaks?

Only if the leak comes from a defect, such as a seal that is the wrong length or comes apart from its panel. Drips at panel joints in heavy rain are normal for a folding cover, and leaks caused by loose clamps or poor alignment are install issues.

Are BAKFlip tonneau covers waterproof?

No. They are water-resistant. Seals and drain tubes handle most rain, but a folding cover can let water through at the seams in heavy rain or a pressure wash.

Can you drive with a BAKFlip partially open?

Yes, if the cover is secured. The MX4, FiberMax and F1 hold part open on buckle straps and fully open on prop rods. BAK's care instructions say to keep the cover secured while driving, and not following them voids the warranty.

Can I return a BAKFlip I have installed?

Not unless it is defective. BAK's policy says it will not accept return requests for non-defective products once they are installed, and it refuses returns sent to BAK without prior authorization. Check the part number against your truck before you open the box.

How do you take off a BAKFlip cover?

Reverse the install: fold the cover forward, loosen the clamps under each rail and lift the cover and rails out together, ideally with a second person. Our MX4 install guide shows where the clamps sit. Keep every clamp and bolt, since a reinstall with missing hardware is an install issue, not a defect.
