Features

  • Twin-tube durability: Outer tube shields the inner tube; a dent won't stop it working.
  • Longer stroke: Twin-tube design gives more travel than a monotube, per TeraFlex.
  • Velocity valve: TeraFlex's in-house valve is tuned to its lift kits.
  • Cooler running: Large diameter piston lowers operating temperature.
  • Triple-chrome rod: Induction-hardened rod with oil block and seal.
  • JK-specific mounting: Front stem/eyelet, rear bar pin/eyelet.

Description & Fitment

For the 2007-2018 Jeep Wrangler JK and JK Unlimited, TeraFlex 9550 VSS Twin-Tube Shocks come as a kit of four or as single front or rear shocks, each for a 2.5", 3"-4" or 6" lift. TeraFlex valves them for extreme off-road work with a smooth highway ride, using a velocity valve tuned to its lift kits. JK-specific mounting uses a stem/eyelet front and bar pin/eyelet rear. Double-welded eyelets, a travel limiter against over-compression and premium rubber bushings round out the build, finished in salt-resistant black e-dip.

About TeraFlex

TERAFLEX.

TeraFlex describes itself as a Jeep company at heart, started and staffed by people who drive them. It designs, engineers and builds suspension systems, shocks, axles and performance parts, with the Wrangler and Gladiator at the center of the range.

The company traces its roots to the 1950s and MEPCO (Military Equipment Parts Company), an early supplier of Jeep parts. TeraFlex Manufacturing followed in 1996 to build heavy-duty suspension for the TJ Wrangler, and today's catalog runs from full lift systems and the Falcon shock line to axles, steering and armor.

Authorized TeraFlex dealer. Prestige Truck is an authorized TeraFlex dealer, so what we sell is new and genuine TeraFlex. In TeraFlex's words, its limited warranty extends "only to the consumer who originally purchased the product," so keep your receipt with your build records.

Frequently Asked Questions

Single shock or kit?

The Kit versions (1545100, 1545200, 1545400) include all four shocks. Front (1553100/200/400) and rear (1554100/200/400) versions are one shock each.

Which lift range do I need?

Pick the version that matches your lift: 2.5", 3"-4" or 6".

Do I need to change my bump stops?

Possibly. TeraFlex says the bump stop setup depends on the shock's collapsed length, your tire size and fenders; the instructions show the right configuration.

What warranty does TeraFlex give?

TeraFlex covers its 9550 shocks for life against defects in materials and workmanship, and paint and powder coat finishes for 90 days. For spacer lift kits, stabilizers and mounting brackets, contact us and we'll confirm the term before you order.

How quickly does it ship?

Shipping is free to the lower 48 states, and most orders arrive within 1-5 business days. We email your tracking number as soon as it ships.

Can you confirm it's the right part before I order?

Yes. Contact us with your VIN or year, model and lift height, and we'll check it against TeraFlex's fitment information before it ships.

Installation

Install time 1 hour
What's involvedRemove the front and rear shocks and bolt in the new ones, tightening the front upper nuts until the grommets bulge slightly. On 2012 and newer, break away part of the plastic battery box to reach the front upper nut.
ToolsBasic mechanics tool set

Here's the short version. Follow TeraFlex's install sheet (below) for your Jeep's exact steps and torque values.

  1. Raise and support the Jeep at the lift points shown in the factory service manual and take off the wheels for better access.
  2. Front: remove the upper nut, retainer and grommet from the top of the shock with 16mm wrenches (on 2012+ Wranglers, break away a section of the thin plastic battery box to reach it), then remove the lower nut and bolt (18mm) and take out the shock.
  3. Front: the new gas-charged shock extends on its own; fit a retainer and grommet on the shaft, pass it up through the shock tower hole, add the second grommet, retainer and nut, and tighten until the grommets bulge slightly.
  4. Front: reinstall the lower bolt and nut and torque to 56 ft-lbs.
  5. Rear: with the Jeep safely supported, apply penetrating oil and remove the lower nut and bolt (18mm; the nuts are captured, so avoid breaking the bolt), then remove the two upper bolts (16mm).
  6. Rear: install the new shock into the upper frame rail and torque to 37 ft-lbs, then fit the lower bolt and nut and torque to 56 ft-lbs.
