Description & Fitment

For a 2007-2018 Jeep Wrangler JK or JK Unlimited whose spare runs an 8x6.5" bolt pattern, this TeraFlex Alpha HD Adjustable Spare Tire Mount bolts the tire to the tailgate and, when paired with the Alpha HD Hinged Spare Tire Carrier (sold separately), carries up to a 37" tire. Used by itself TeraFlex rates it to 35". Formed from CNC laser cut, welded steel with heavy gussets, it adjusts for height and fore/aft position.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the right mount for an 8-lug spare?

Yes, if the spare wheel uses an 8x6.5" bolt pattern. For 5-lug wheels TeraFlex offers 5x5" (4838130) and 5x5.5" (4838235) versions.

Is the hinged carrier included?

No. The Alpha HD Hinged Spare Tire Carrier (4838100) is sold separately; TeraFlex designed the mount to install with it.

Are there wheel backspacing limits?

TeraFlex requires 5" backspacing or less on an aftermarket wheel, or its spacer kit 1055005 for stock wheels.

How quickly does it ship?

What's involvedRemove the spare tire, third brake light and factory tire mount, bolt on the new mount base and press in the wheel studs for your tire size. Set the plate position against the hinge, then cut the third brake light to fit its bracket and remount the spare.

Here's the short version. Follow TeraFlex's install sheet (below) for your Jeep's exact steps and torque values.

  1. Remove the spare tire and any factory spare tire bumpers, then take out the four T20 Torx screws, unplug the third brake light and remove the light assembly.
  2. Remove the factory tire mount (eight 13mm bolts). For a stand-alone install, put thread locker on the original bolts, fit the new mount base and torque the eight bolts to 20 N-m (15 ft-lbs).
  3. If fitting with the cast hinge kit (#82214770), place gaskets on both sides of the hinge, apply thread locker to the original bolts and torque all eight to 20 N-m (15 ft-lbs).
  4. Press the included wheel studs into the hole set for your tire size: three studs for 5-lug, four for 8-lug.
  5. Hang the spare on the mount plate with one lug nut, slide it into the base, push the tire firmly against the hinge and mark where the mount meets the base; take it off, refit the plate 1/8"-3/16" (3-4 mm) past the mark, fit the pinch bolts and spacers (at least one bolt through the slot) and torque to 38 ft-lbs (51 N-m).
  6. Cut the factory third brake light along the black line and fix it to the bracket with two original T20 screws; mount the spare with the two custom lug nuts plus the original lug(s) at 65 ft-lbs (87 N-m), route the light wiring through the wheel, plug it in and torque the light bolts to 37 ft-lbs (50 N-m).

    • TeraFlex extends its limited warranty only to the consumer who first bought the product, and only on the vehicle the part was first installed on. It does not pass to a later owner.
    • Coverage starts on the purchase date and does not restart if a part is repaired or replaced.
    • For a covered defect, TeraFlex will either repair or replace the product (or the faulty part) free of charge or refund the purchase price, at its discretion, and it pays the freight to send a repaired or replacement part back to you.
    • Not covered: damage from transportation, storage, improper use, skipped instructions or preventive maintenance, modifications, unauthorized repair, normal wear and tear, product finish, improper installation or maintenance, racing or competition, or accidents, abuse and neglect. Improper installation, poor maintenance, racing or competition use, and neglect or abuse void the warranty.
    • Paint and powder coat finishes carry 90 days of defect coverage only, not wear from use.
    • Claims: contact us first. Keep your proof of purchase or original invoice; removing the part from the vehicle and the inbound shipping are the owner's responsibility.
