Description & Fitment

The TeraFlex Dana 30/44 HD Ball Joint Kit has two upper and two lower ball joints for the front axle of a 1997-2006 Jeep Wrangler TJ or Wrangler Unlimited LJ, 1987-1995 Wrangler YJ, Cherokee XJ, Grand Cherokee ZJ or Comanche MJ with a Dana 30 or Dana 44. TeraFlex engineers them for the added load of oversized tires and offset wheels, with heat-treated 4140 chromoly ball studs, 1045 carbon steel housings and a magnesium phosphate coating against corrosion. Choose the knurled version for knuckle bores that have loosened from repeat ball joint changes, or the smooth version for a healthy bore.

About TeraFlex

TERAFLEX.

TeraFlex describes itself as a Jeep company at heart, started and staffed by people who drive them. It designs, engineers and builds suspension systems, shocks, axles and performance parts, with the Wrangler and Gladiator at the center of the range.

The company traces its roots to the 1950s and MEPCO (Military Equipment Parts Company), an early supplier of Jeep parts. TeraFlex Manufacturing followed in 1996 to build heavy-duty suspension for the TJ Wrangler, and today's catalog runs from full lift systems and the Falcon shock line to axles, steering and armor.

Authorized TeraFlex dealer. Prestige Truck is an authorized TeraFlex dealer, so what we sell is new and genuine TeraFlex. In TeraFlex's words, its limited warranty extends "only to the consumer who originally purchased the product," so keep your receipt with your build records.

Frequently Asked Questions

Knurl or no knurl?

The joints without knurl won't score the knuckle and open the bore. The knurled joints are for knuckles with a loose press fit from repeated ball joint changes or where knurled joints were installed before.

Do they work with RCV axle shafts?

No. TeraFlex says these ball joints will not work with RCV shafts.

How long does install take?

TeraFlex estimates about 4 hours.

What warranty does TeraFlex give?

TeraFlex covers its ball joints, tie rods, tie rod ends and drag links for life against defects in materials and workmanship, and paint and powder coat finishes for 90 days. For knuckles, pitman arms, clamps and skid plates, contact us and we'll confirm the term before you order.

How quickly does it ship?

Shipping is free to the lower 48 states, and most orders arrive within 1-5 business days. We email your tracking number as soon as it ships.

Can you confirm it's the right part before I order?

Yes. Contact us with your VIN or year, model, front axle and lift height, and we'll check it against TeraFlex's fitment information before it ships.

Installation

Install time 4 hours
What's involvedRemove the brakes, rotors, unit bearings and axle shafts, free the knuckles and press out the old ball joints. Press in the new upper and lower ball joints, refit the knuckles, grease the joints and reassemble the axle and brakes.
Tools
  • Basic mechanics tool set
  • Ball joint press
  • Grease gun/high quality grease
  • Blue thread locking compound
  • Large hammer

Here's the short version. Follow TeraFlex's install sheet (below) for your Jeep's exact steps and torque values.

  1. Lift and support the front, remove the front tires, the brake caliper and anchor bracket assemblies (support them so the brake lines and ABS wiring carry no weight) and the rotors.
  2. Unbolt and remove the ABS sensors, remove the three 12-point 13mm unit bearing bolts and pull out the unit bearing and axle, supporting the inner shaft to protect the seal; remove the dust shields.
  3. Pull the cotter pins and loosen, but do not remove, the ball joint nuts, free the outer knuckle (large hammer, pickle fork or similar), then press out the upper and then the lower ball joints with a ball joint press and clean the bores.
  4. Press the new lower ball joint into the inner C with the raised grease passages facing the axle tube (same orientation both sides) and fit its grease zerk; take the boot off the new upper joint, press it in from the top down with the press cup centered, and refit the boot.
  5. Refit the outer knuckle on the ball joint studs with the ABS wiring retainer and torque the nuts to 70 ft-lbs (95 N-m), tightening further (never loosening) to line up the cotter pins; grease the joints (lowers until grease shows at the bottom lip seal, uppers until the boot swells slightly; do not overfill).
  6. Repeat on the other side, then reinstall the axle shafts, unit bearings and brakes in reverse order with the unit bearing bolts at 75 ft-lbs (102 N-m).
