Description & Fitment

The HD version of TeraFlex's Falcon rear shock skid plates suits JK owners who plan to weld their shock armor in place. It covers each rear Falcon shock on a 2007-2018 Jeep Wrangler JK or JK Unlimited with 1/4" cold rolled steel plate and comes in a raw finish, so it can be welded in place. TeraFlex says welding is not required but highly recommended for extreme use. Plan on about two hours of labor; the shocks are not included.

About TeraFlex

TERAFLEX.

TeraFlex describes itself as a Jeep company at heart, started and staffed by people who drive them. It designs, engineers and builds suspension systems, shocks, axles and performance parts, with the Wrangler and Gladiator at the center of the range.

The company traces its roots to the 1950s and MEPCO (Military Equipment Parts Company), an early supplier of Jeep parts. TeraFlex Manufacturing followed in 1996 to build heavy-duty suspension for the TJ Wrangler, and today's catalog runs from full lift systems and the Falcon shock line to axles, steering and armor.

Authorized TeraFlex dealer. Prestige Truck is an authorized TeraFlex dealer, so what we sell is new and genuine TeraFlex. In TeraFlex's words, its limited warranty extends "only to the consumer who originally purchased the product," so keep your receipt with your build records.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to weld it?

No. TeraFlex says welding is not required, but it highly recommends welding for extreme use. The raw finish leaves bare steel for that.

Will it need paint?

It ships raw. TeraFlex's instruction sheet lists black spray paint among the tools and supplies.

Which shocks does it fit?

TeraFlex designs it for its JK Falcon Series 3 Piggyback rear shocks and lists Series 2 Monotube shocks as compatible. The shocks are sold separately.

How quickly does it ship?

Shipping is free to the lower 48 states, and most orders arrive within 1-5 business days. We email your tracking number as soon as it ships.

Can you confirm it's the right part before I order?

Yes. Send us your VIN or year, model and your engine, transfer case and the TeraFlex parts you already run, and we'll check it against TeraFlex's fitment information before it ships.

Do I need to read the instructions first?

Yes. TeraFlex asks you to read its instructions fully before you start, check the parts list against the box, and judge whether you have the experience to do the work yourself.

Installation

Install time 2 hours
What's involvedRemove each rear lower control arm in turn, cut off the factory shock and sway bar brackets and bolt on the skid plate at your chosen level, drilling 3/8" holes (welding optional). Refit the arms, sway bar links and shocks.
Tools
  • 9/16" and 3/4" (or 19 mm) wrench or socket
  • Ratchet
  • 6 mm Allen wrench
  • Large flat head screwdriver or pry bar
  • 3/8" drill bit
  • Rest on TeraFlex's tool list

Here's the short version. Follow TeraFlex's install sheet (below) for your Jeep's exact steps and torque values.

  1. Pick the mounting level: Level 1 keeps the lower shock mount height, Level 2 raises it 13/16" and Level 3 1-5/8" (Levels 2-3 change axle travel, so the shocks can bottom before the bump stops or the springs can unseat at droop); Falcon shocks built after August 2020 need their stud bushing replaced with the provided 61-01-01-001 bushing, lubricated and pressed in.
  2. Chock the front wheels, lift the rear and support it on jack stands at the axle, remove the rear wheels, then free the lower shock ends: outer nuts (3/4" or 19mm), inner nuts and washers (6mm Allen on the studs), studs and spacers.
  3. One side at a time (never remove both rear lower control arms together), remove a lower control arm (21mm), unbolt the sway bar link from the axle (18mm), cut off the shock and sway bar brackets with a cut-off wheel or plasma cutter, and grind the control arm bracket flat and clean.
  4. Fit the skid plate at your level with the control arm bolt (without the arm) in the top hole and 3/8" bolts, washers and flange nuts in the rear holes, mark or punch the remaining holes, remove the plate, drill 3/8" holes, paint them and refit; for Levels 2-3 first trim the control arm brackets as the sheet shows (13/16" up for Level 2) and grind for fit if needed.
  5. Welding is optional (clean, tack, weld and paint); reinstall the lower control arm (bolts 125 ft-lbs), check the 3/8" bolts (45 ft-lbs), refit the sway bar link to the new bracket (75 ft-lbs) and repeat on the other side.
  6. Touch up bare metal with black paint, lube the lower shock bushings and fit the sleeves, mount the shock tops (37 ft-lbs), set the new spacer in the skid plate with the M12 x 120mm bolt and washer, compress the shock up into the plate, push the bolt through and fit the M12 washer and nut (56 ft-lbs); refit the wheels and torque the lug nuts per the service manual.
