Description & Fitment
TeraFlex's 2Low kit adds a two-wheel-drive low-range position to the NP231-J transfer case in a 1997-2006 Jeep Wrangler TJ or Wrangler Unlimited LJ. With the rear wheels driving in low range and the front disengaged, the Jeep can turn tighter on narrow switchbacks, and TeraFlex says it eliminates most of the front-end bind you feel turning in 4WD. The change is internal and needs no external upgrades; the new pattern reads 2H, 4H, N, 4L, 2L. TeraFlex lists about five hours of labor.

About TeraFlex
TeraFlex describes itself as a Jeep company at heart, started and staffed by people who drive them. It designs, engineers and builds suspension systems, shocks, axles and performance parts, with the Wrangler and Gladiator at the center of the range.
The company traces its roots to the 1950s and MEPCO (Military Equipment Parts Company), an early supplier of Jeep parts. TeraFlex Manufacturing followed in 1996 to build heavy-duty suspension for the TJ Wrangler, and today's catalog runs from full lift systems and the Falcon shock line to axles, steering and armor.
Authorized TeraFlex dealer. Prestige Truck is an authorized TeraFlex dealer, so what we sell is new and genuine TeraFlex. In TeraFlex's words, its limited warranty extends "only to the consumer who originally purchased the product," so keep your receipt with your build records.

Installation
- Basic mechanics tool set
- Snap ring pliers
- Mallet or dead blow hammer
- RTV gasket maker
- Red thread locking compound
- Rest on TeraFlex's tool list
Here's the short version. Follow TeraFlex's install sheet (below) for your Jeep's exact steps and torque values.
- Drain the transfer case oil, remove the rear driveline, disconnect the front driveline at the transfer case yoke and tie it aside, and pull the speedometer gear assembly (13mm bolt); the kit can be fitted with the case in the Jeep or on the bench.
- Remove the front output yoke, the rear dust shield and harmonic balancer (if fitted), the rear output seal and snap ring, the five tail housing bolts and tail housing, and the indicator switch if fitted; split the case (eight case-half bolts; note the 10mm 12-point bolt; pry at the machined notches) and lift out the outputs with the chain.
- Remove the range lever, washer and nut, the mode fork with shift rail and mode ring (note the ring's orientation), the range fork with range hub, the shift detent screw, spring and poppet, and the factory shift sector; check the fork shift pads for wear.
- Fit the new shift sector in place of the factory one with the original O-ring and bushing, put the provided pads in the new range fork and install it with its pin in the sector groove, refit the mode fork, shift rail and mode ring, then the range lever, washer and lock nut (20-25 ft-lbs), the indicator switch (15-25 ft-lbs) and the detent screw, spring and poppet (12-18 ft-lbs).
- Clean and refit the magnet, mode fork spring and oil pickup, join the case halves with a max 3/16" bead of gasket maker and blue-thread-locked bolts torqued crisscross to 20-25 ft-lbs, fit the snap ring, speedometer gear and retaining snap ring, the tail housing with a max 3/16" bead (bolts crisscross 15-20 ft-lbs), and both yoke nuts with red thread locker at 90-130 ft-lbs.
- Tighten the sensor bolt to 8-12 ft-lbs, fill with 2.2 pints (1.0L) of ATF+4 and reinstall the case if it was removed, adjust the shift linkage at the trunnion in 2H, and test-drive to confirm every position of the new shift pattern (2H, 4H, N, 4L, 2L).
