- 6 hp series-wound motor: A 6 hp series-wound motor drives the M8274, and Warn credits it with keeping line speed up under load. Warn's chart shows 76.15 ft/min with no load and still 7.78 ft/min at the full 10,000 lb.
- 10,000 lb rated line pull: The rating is 10,000 lb on the first wrap. Warn's chart then steps down to 8,378 lb on layer 2, 7,209 lb on layer 3, 6,327 lb on layer 4 and 5,636 lb on layer 5.
- IP68 Albright contactor pack: Switching runs through an Albright contactor that Warn rates IP68 waterproof, carried in a high-strength polymer control pack mounted on the winch.
- Oilite bushings on the pinion: Warn fits a pair of Oilite bushings to the pinion gear assembly to resist wear in the spur gear drive train.
- Bolt-secured brake shaft: The brake shaft is secured with a bolt and washer, a detail Warn added for long-term durability.

Warn's M8274-S (106175) carries 150' of 3/8" (9.5mm) Spydura synthetic rope, the longest line in this group, guided by a 6061-T6 billet aluminum hawse fairlead. Under it is the same 10,000 lb, 6 hp spur-gear M8274 with a wired remote and IP68 Albright contactor.

Choose the right version: this is the M8274-S with synthetic rope. Steel rope (125') with a roller fairlead: M8274 (106170).
Not included: the winch mount or mounting plate and the vehicle battery, both sold separately; 1.75" bolts for a 1/2" plate are not supplied, per Warn's guide.

Warn's M8274 guide says that on the M8274-S you install the winch completely and confirm it runs before installing the rope.
How much pull is left on layer 5?
Warn's chart gives 5,636 lb on layer 5, down from 10,000 lb on layer 1, with 8,378 lb, 7,209 lb and 6,327 lb in between.
What bolts and torque are specified?
Warn's M8274 guide calls for 7/16-14 class 8.8 metric (grade 5) or better bolts at 45-50 ft. lbs. (61-68 Nm). Bolt length goes by plate thickness: 1.5" for a 1/4" or 3/8" plate, 1.75" for a 1/2" plate, which Warn notes is not supplied.
Why does it stand so tall?
The M8274 is an upright design. Warn's drawing gives 16.9" of length and 15.3" of height, so check grille, hood and bumper clearance before you order. It still uses the common 10" x 4.5" pattern.
When does the wiring go on?
After the winch is fully bolted down and the hook is attached, Warn says. Route the cables away from sharp edges, heat and moving parts, and cover every terminal with the supplied boots.
How old is the M8274 design?
Warn traces its roots to the company's first winches of the late 1950s. Today's version adds the IP68 Albright contactor, Oilite pinion bushings and a bolt-secured brake shaft.

Before mounting, check the winch, rope, fairlead, hook, wired remote, control pack and T-handle for shipping damage, then read Warn's M8274 / M8274-S Installation Guide for bolts, torque and the wiring order. Check it as soon as it arrives.- Look for crushed ends, punctures or tears in the carton.
- If something looks wrong, take photos of the box and the parts (and if a driver asks you to sign, note the damage on the receipt).
