Should I take the synthetic rope or the steel cable version?

Synthetic if you handle the line often or care about what happens when a line parts, because Spydura carries almost no stored energy and drops rather than whipping. It is also much lighter and gives you 150' here against 125' of steel. Steel if the rope will be dragged over rock and sharp edges regularly, or if you want the cheaper option, because steel takes abrasion better and does not mind UV or grit.

Does the synthetic rope need different maintenance?

A little. Keep the hawse fairlead clean and free of burrs, since a sharp edge there is the main thing that damages synthetic line. Rinse mud and grit out of the rope and let it dry rather than spooling it wet and packed with sand.
