Best Hard Tonneau Covers: Folding, Roll-Up, Retractable and One-Piece Picks

How we made this guide: picks and specs come from our catalog and fitment data, owner quotes come from verified reviews and the guide was drafted with AI help, then checked and edited by Trevor Hall.

The best hard tonneau covers are the BAKFlip MX4 for most trucks (from $1,199.99), the BAK Revolver X4s hard roll-up for wet weather (from $1,399.99) and the RetraxPRO MX retractable for a key lock that holds at any point (from $2,149.99). In our range, hard covers run from just under $900 to over $3,000. Most hard folding, roll-up and one-piece covers start between $1,100 and $1,500. The MX4 leads because it pairs a 400 lb rating and a 5-year warranty with panels that catch as you lower them and a folded stack that stands at the cab to free the whole bed.

The BAKFlip G2 is the value pick, from $1,099.99. The UnderCover SE one-piece lid, from $1,349.99, is the pick when security matters most. Each section below names one best pick for a job, with its price, load rating, warranty and an honest reason to skip it.

Folding, roll-up and retractable covers are only as secure as a locked tailgate. Of the four hard styles, a one-piece lid such as the UnderCover SE holds the tailgate shut itself, as do most Roll-N-Lock retractables. That is why the security pick below is not the same cover as the overall pick.

How hard tonneau covers work

The folding, roll-up and retractable picks here ride on aluminum side rails that clamp inside your bed rails, with no drilling to hold them on. A one-piece lid works differently: it lifts on gas struts and, once locked, holds the tailgate shut. How each style opens decides your bed access, your view out the rear window and the price.

A hard folding tonneau cover is a row of rigid panels hinged together. You open it from the back with a release inside the bed and fold the panels toward the cab. Strapped in its folded stack, a typical cover leaves about two-thirds of the bed open; covers with prop rods or struts can also stand the stack upright at the cab to free the whole bed. Our deeper guide to the style is Best Hard Folding Tonneau Covers.

A hard roll-up tonneau cover strings interlocking aluminum slats under a vinyl skin. It winds onto a spool at the bulkhead, so the whole bed opens and the rolled cover sits low against the cab. The rear window and your backup camera stay in view.

A retractable tonneau cover slides forward in tracks and winds into a canister, a box fixed behind the cab. The canister always takes some bed floor. In return the cover never has to come off the truck, most models lock wherever you stop them and the rear window stays clear. Best Retractable Tonneau Covers goes deeper on manual and electric models.

A one-piece tonneau cover is a single molded or fabricated lid that sits on the bed rails. Nothing folds or rolls. The SE we feature below is one piece of ABS polymer with a textured black finish. If you are still deciding between styles, Types of Truck Bed Covers lays out every option side by side, including soft covers.

How we picked

No one at Prestige Truck fitted these covers for this guide, so nothing here is a test result. We ranked the 46 hard cover series in our catalog (16 hard folding, 5 hard roll-ups, 21 retractables and 4 one-piece lids from BAK, Retrax, Roll-N-Lock, Pace Edwards, Extang, UnderCover, TruXedo and LOMAX) on published load ratings, written warranties, bed access, how many of our 18 truck lines each fits and the owner reviews on file. Every pick below wins one job and comes with its trade-offs.

"Best" here means best of what we carry. We left out the BAKFlip F1: BAK lists it as discontinued since June 2026 and sells it only while supplies last. We suggest the FiberMax if you want a fiberglass top, or the MX4 for everything else. UnderCover models have no owner reviews on file yet.

Prices are the From price across all trucks. The figure for your truck depends on your bed length and generation, and the fit check on each product page shows the part you need. Here is how the four hard styles price out in our range.

Style Series in our range Starts at Most expensive part
Hard folding 16 $899.99 (UnderCover Select) Under $2,400 (LOMAX Stance)
Hard roll-up 5 $1,199.99 (TruXedo Sentry) Under $1,700 (BAK Revolver X4 TS)
One-piece 4 $1,299.99 (UnderCover Lux) Under $2,500 (UnderCover Elite LX)
Retractable 21 $1,191.19 (Pace Edwards SwitchBlade) Over $3,100 (Pace Edwards UltraGroove electric)

In our range, every hard cover costs more than any soft one: soft covers top out under $750, and the least expensive hard cover starts just under $900. Our bed measuring guide helps you get the bed length right before you order.

Best overall: BAKFlip MX4

BAKFlip MX4 hard folding tonneau cover partially folded open over a truck bed

Best overall

BAKFlip MX4 Hard Folding Tonneau Cover

From $1,199.99 · The default hard cover for most half-ton and midsize trucks: full bed access, self-latching panels and a 5-year warranty.

Check fit for your truck

The MX4 sold today is BAK's third generation. BAK says its panels, heavy-duty aluminum skins over a high-density polymer core, are about 22% stronger than the original MX4's. The latches were reworked to resist forced entry too. The cover is rated for 400 lb spread evenly, each panel catches as you lower it and the textured matte black top hides scuffs. Fold the panels forward and stand the stack upright at the cab to open the whole bed.

For water it uses EPDM seals around the edges, a dual-action seal at the tailgate and drain tubes that carry runoff out through the bed floor. Installation takes roughly half an hour with hand tools and no drilling. Every one of our 18 truck lines has a matching part. No hard folder we sell has more owner reviews: 328, averaging 4.5.

Owners are not unanimous about water. One writes:

“If you want a cover that does not leak look somewhere else.”

BAKFlip MX4 owner · 2 out of 5 stars

Another, with an F-150, reports the opposite:

“It never leaks, fits perfect, and functions smooth.”

Close-up of a BAKFlip MX4 hard folding cover on a Ford F-150 above the sea

Pros

  • 100% bed access with the stack folded to the cab
  • Self-latching panels, 400 lb rating and a 5-year warranty
  • Fits all 18 truck lines we cover

Cons

  • No rack rails (the MX4 TS adds them)
  • The stack blocks much of the rear window when it stands at the cab
  • One owner says the struts vibrate out of their holders when stowed

Skip it if you plan to carry a rack, bikes or a roof-top tent on the cover. Look at the rack-ready picks further down, or the BAKFlip MX4 TS in our hard folding guide. Skip it too if you rarely put weight on the closed cover and want to spend less: the G2 below folds the same way for less money.

Best value: BAKFlip G2

BAKFlip G2 hard folding tonneau cover folded open over a pickup bed

Best value

BAKFlip G2 Hard Folding Tonneau Cover

From $1,099.99 · The same fold-to-the-cab design as the MX4 for less, with a lower load rating and a shorter warranty.

Check fit for your truck

The G2 keeps the original BAKFlip design and opens the same way as the MX4: panels that catch as you lower them, a clamp-on install and struts that hold the folded stack upright at the cab. Its solid-core panels carry aircraft-grade aluminum skins finished in UV-stable semi-gloss black.

Compared with the MX4, the G2 gives up the textured finish, 100 lb of rating (it carries 300 lb) and two years of warranty (it has 3). It fits all 18 of our truck lines, holds a 4.6 average from 253 owner reviews and works with BAK's BAKBox 2 fold-away toolbox. BAK says the third brake light stays visible on short and standard beds only, so check that if you drive a long bed. BAKFlip G2 vs MX4 weighs the gap.

One G2 owner sums up the weather side:

“Installed in about 30 minutes and has proven to be almost completely water tight. Only a slight amount of water can be found at the corners of my bed after going through the car wash.”

BAKFlip G2 owner · 5 out of 5 stars

If your budget stops short of $1,000, the UnderCover Select starts at $899.99. That is the least expensive hard folding cover we carry. It opens about two-thirds of the bed and fits 17 of our 18 truck lines. It has no owner reviews on file yet.

UnderCover Select hard folding tonneau cover on a 2024 Toyota Tacoma

Pros

  • Folds upright at the cab for the whole bed, like the MX4
  • 4.6 average from 253 owner reviews
  • Works with BAK's BAKBox 2 fold-away toolbox

Cons

  • 300 lb rating and a 3-year warranty
  • Third brake light stays visible on short and standard beds only
  • One owner reports panels that sagged, faded and cracked within two years

Skip it if you haul heavy gear on the closed cover often. At 300 lb it carries 100 lb less than the MX4, which is the step up.

Best hard roll-up and best for weather: BAK Revolver X4s

BAK Revolver X4s hard roll-up tonneau cover rolled forward for full bed access

Best hard roll-up

BAK Revolver X4s Hard Roll-Up Tonneau Cover

From $1,399.99 · Aluminum slats under one seamless vinyl skin, 100% bed access and a low-profile roll that keeps the rear window clear.

Check fit for your truck

The BAK Revolver X4s is our pick among hard roll-ups. Interlocking aluminum slats sit under a one-piece, aluminum-reinforced TriShield 70-grade vinyl top, so there are no hinge lines across the deck for water to find. Flush-fitting side seals and an integrated bulkhead seal close the perimeter. The cover rolls forward onto a spool at the bulkhead, opens 100% of the bed and is rated for 400 lb spread evenly.

The spec sheet lists patented rotational locking rails and automatic slam latches. It clamps to the factory bed rails with no drilling and fits all 18 of our truck lines. Owners rate it 4.5 from 250 reviews. BAK gives it a 5-year warranty.

It is our weather pick because the deck has no seams, and the owners who report water mostly report it at the tailgate edge, not across the top. One writes:

“Very little leakage even in hard rains. I'm very impressed and glad I spent the money on this instead of a fold up or soft top.”

BAK Revolver X4s owner · 5 out of 5 stars

Another owner gave four stars and explains why it is not five:

“Only reason its not 5*'s is the water that leaks in around the tailgate.”

BAK Revolver X4s owner · 4 out of 5 stars

Gray 2020 Ford F-150 with a BAK Revolver X4s hard roll-up tonneau cover

Pros

  • One seamless vinyl top over aluminum slats
  • 100% bed access, with the rolled cover low against the cab
  • Rear window and cameras stay clear
  • Fits all 18 truck lines

Cons

  • A roll-up is only as secure as a locked tailgate
  • Owners report water at the tailgate edge
  • One owner's cover arrived with chipped powder coat on the rails
  • No rack rails (the X4 TS adds them)

Skip it if you want to stack or strap heavy gear on top. Pick the X4 TS or a RetraxPRO XR instead. Skip it too if you want a key lock or a bare aluminum deck. The RetraxPRO MX below has both.

For a roll-up that costs less, BAK's Revolver X2, from $1,299.99, uses the same aluminum slats under a 60-grade DualShield vinyl top instead of the 70-grade TriShield on the X4s, with the same 400 lb rating. Owners rate it 4.5 from 159 reviews.

Best retractable: RetraxPRO MX

RetraxPRO MX Retractable Tonneau Cover

Best retractable

RetraxPRO MX Retractable Tonneau Cover

From $2,149.99 · A key-locking, 500 lb double-wall aluminum deck that stops at any point and opens with the tailgate up or down.

Check fit for your truck

The RetraxPRO MX is a manual retractable with double-wall aluminum slats rated for up to 500 lb spread evenly. It retracts into a cab-end canister and holds open at any position. The TraxLatch handle locks with a key, and the cover opens independently of the tailgate, so you can reach in over the top with the tailgate up. The warranty is limited lifetime for the original purchaser.

It fits 17 of our 18 truck lines (not the Jeep Gladiator). Retrax rates the install at under an hour. A GM owner who fitted one in 2.5 hours with a helper says square spacing is the secret to tailgate use and weather seal, so go slowly. The MX is the most reviewed retractable we sell, rated 4.6 from 295 owners.

On locking, one owner says:

“Even if I open it and slide it a few inches or open it all the way I can lock in any position I want to.”

RetraxPRO MX owner · 5 out of 5 stars

Retrax says a locking tailgate completes the setup, even on its key-locking models, so a key on the cover is a strong deterrent but not the whole job. You can also slide the deck up against a tall load and lock it there, but anything in the uncovered part of the bed is then within reach.

Three things to weigh. The canister stays at the front of the bed whether the cover is open or closed, and Retrax publishes no depth figure. The deck rolls in open tracks, so clear snow and ice before opening, which is a Retrax warranty condition. The drain tubes that carry water out through the bed floor should be seated carefully and checked after the first heavy rain.

Red 2016 GMC Sierra with a RetraxPRO MX retractable cover closed

Pros

  • Key lock that holds at any point on the track
  • 500 lb deck and a limited lifetime warranty
  • Opens with the tailgate up or down

Cons

  • The canister takes some bed floor
  • One owner says it leaks a lot and still keeps gear in bins
  • Costs more than any hard folding or hard roll-up pick here
  • No rack rails (the PRO XR adds them)

Skip it if you carry long loads that need every inch of the bed floor, or if you never use the key lock. A hard folding cover costs less and gives the full bed once the stack is up.

Retrax also sells the RetraxONE MX from $1,549.99, with a one-piece polycarbonate deck, a 200 lb rating and a 1-year warranty. If you want the cover to open from your key fob, the Retrax EQ, from $2,799.99, is the electric pick in our retractable guide. For a deep dive on the family, read Is Retrax Worth It?

Best one-piece and best for security: UnderCover SE

UnderCover SE one-piece tonneau cover closed and latched on a pickup bed, rear three-quarter studio view, the black textured lid sitting flush across the tailgate with no bed floor showing.

Best for security

UnderCover SE One-Piece Tonneau Cover

From $1,349.99 · A key-locked ABS lid that holds the tailgate shut, rated 400 lb, with no owner reviews on file yet.

Check fit for your truck

The UnderCover SE is one lid of ABS composite with a textured black finish that UnderCover lists as resistant to UV and scratches. An X-pattern frame braces it underneath, and UnderCover rates it for 400 lb spread evenly. One key locks the lid. The closed lid also holds the tailgate shut, so the bed stays locked even if your tailgate has no lock of its own. None of the other picks in this guide do that, which is why the SE is our security pick.

The lid lifts on gas struts for loading and comes off when you need to carry something tall. UnderCover gives it a 3-year limited warranty, with the struts and mounting hardware covered for 1 year. It fits 15 of our 18 truck lines (not the Ford Maverick, Jeep Gladiator or Nissan Frontier). The fit check on the product page shows the part for your bed.

The SE has no owner reviews on file yet, so this pick rests on UnderCover's specs and the one-piece design. In our range, UnderCover's Lux starts lower at $1,299.99, while the Elite (from $1,449.99) and Elite LX (from $1,499.99) cost more. We have not checked their specs.

Red 2015 Ram 1500 with an UnderCover SE one-piece tonneau cover

Pros

  • Key-locked lid that holds the tailgate shut
  • 400 lb rating on an X-braced ABS lid
  • No slats, folding panels or tracks to wear

Cons

  • No owner reviews on file yet
  • Struts and hardware covered for only 1 year
  • The lid has to come off for tall loads
  • No rack rails

Skip it if you carry tall loads often, since the lid has to come off for them, or if you want a rack on the cover. The X4 TS and RetraxPRO XR below have T-slot rails.

Best for racks: BAK Revolver X4 TS

Best for racks

BAK Revolver X4 TS Hard Roll-Up Tonneau Cover

From $1,549.99 · A hard roll-up with full-length T-slot rails for crossbars, carriers and racks, rated 400 lb on the closed cover.

Check fit for your truck

The BAK Revolver X4 TS is the X4s with integrated full-length T-slot rails on both sides. The spec sheet lists crossbars, racks and carriers as compatible, and the closed cover is rated for 400 lb evenly distributed. It rolls tight to the cab, opens 100% of the bed and clamps on in about 30 to 60 minutes with hand tools. It fits 16 of our 18 truck lines, not the Honda Ridgeline or the Jeep Gladiator. Owners rate it 4.6 from 172 reviews. BAK gives it a 5-year warranty.

Why not the BAKFlip MX4 TS, which starts lower at $1,449.99? Both are rated 400 lb with a 5-year warranty, but the X4 TS rolls up low behind the cab instead of standing a folded stack against the rear window, and more owners have reviewed it (172 at 4.6, against 79 at 4.5 for the MX4 TS). The MX4 TS fits one more of our truck lines, so check it if the X4 TS does not fit yours. Our hard folding guide covers it in full.

BAKFlip MX4 TS hard folding cover with T-slot rails on a 2024 Jeep Gladiator

One 2024 Tundra owner explains why they chose a roll-up over a retractable:

“I selected this cover for my truck over a canister style hard roll up cover because I did not want to give up the bed space in my truck permanently. The rolled up cover takes up about 7 inches on top of the bed behind the back window.”

BAK Revolver X4 TS owner · 5 out of 5 stars

Check that your rack's feet clear the roll before you buy: one F-150 owner needed taller feet for the cover to roll all the way up. Stay within both the rack maker's rating and the cover's own 400 lb rating, and spread the weight. A 2025 Nissan Frontier owner reports a gap between the cover and the tailgate with the rails set as designed, so confirm fit on the product page for your exact truck and year. Another owner says the plastic cover at the end of the cover is flimsy.

If you prefer a retractable with rails, the RetraxPRO XR, from $2,299.99, adds T-slot rails to the PRO MX design, with the same 500 lb rating and a limited lifetime warranty. It fits 17 of our 18 truck lines and owners rate it 4.6 from 271 reviews.

One XR owner writes:

“The cover rolls great, was easy to install, and doesn't leak (even when I'm washing it and spraying water everywhere). Dust from a dusty road will get in, primarily through the tailgate area, but nothing out there is airtight.”

RetraxPRO XR owner · 5 out of 5 stars

Two XR owners report parts that arrived damaged, and one says the plastic end pieces crack too easily, so check every piece before you start the install.

Skip the X4 TS if you never mount anything on the cover. The X4s costs less and has the same seamless top. Skip the XR if you do not want a canister in the bed.

The four hard styles compared, and hard vs soft

Every hard cover trades something. Here is how the four styles line up, so you can see where the pick for your truck came from.

Style Bed access Rear window Locks by Racks Best for
Hard folding Two-thirds, or 100% with struts or prop rods Blocked when the stack stands at the cab Locked tailgate Only on rail models such as the MX4 TS Most owners; strong value
Hard roll-up 100% Clear Locked tailgate On the X4 TS Weather and a low profile
Retractable As far as you open it Clear Own key plus a locked tailgate On XR models Everyday access and a key lock
One-piece Whole bed under the raised lid; tall loads need it off Clear when closed Own key; the lid holds the tailgate shut No rack rails on the SE Security

The trade-offs of going hard are price and bulk: every hard cover we sell costs more than any soft one, a folded stack blocks the rear window when it stands at the cab, a retractable's canister takes floor and a one-piece lid has to come off for tall loads.

If you are weighing hard against soft, soft folding covers start at $339.99 and soft roll-ups at $349.99. They give up the rigid panels and rigid-panel security. Soft vs Hard Tonneau Covers covers that choice in full, and The Best Tonneau Covers ranks every type together.

Security: what a hard cover does and does not do

Rigid panels, slats and lids cannot be cut like vinyl. That is the main security benefit of a hard cover, and it holds for all four styles. What each one leaves to your tailgate is where they differ.

BAK says that once the tailgate is shut and locked, nobody can open a closed MX4 from outside, because its latches and release sit inside the bed. The Revolver X4s release cord is reachable with the tailgate down. A Retrax cover locks with a key, but Retrax still describes a locking tailgate as completing the setup. A one-piece lid such as the SE removes that dependency.

In practice, check that your tailgate locks before you count on a folding, roll-up or retractable cover for security. If it does not, add a lock before you buy. A hard folding or roll-up cover with a locked tailgate is hard to get into without damage, while a key lock on a retractable adds a second layer.

Weather: what to expect

None of the hard covers we sell is rated waterproof. Expect some water at the tailgate edge, which owners of several covers here report. The seams you can avoid are the ones across the deck. A seamless vinyl top (the X4s), a one-piece polycarbonate sheet (the RetraxONE MX) or a molded lid (the SE) remove the joints between panels. Fewer joints is not a promise. RetraxONE MX owners still report water at the sides and tailgate, and one says hail punched a hole through the top. On the folding side, two MX4 owners report water between the panels or in the middle of the bed.

Drains matter. The MX4 and PRO MX route water out through drain tubes in the bed floor. Owners of several retractables report drain tubes that slipped loose or did not fit the factory holes.

Cold weather favors covers without open tracks. Retractables roll in tracks that grit and ice can jam. A folding cover has no track to freeze, but its latches and seals still need the ice cleared. Do not pull on a frozen panel. Hard roll-ups ride on rails that can freeze too: one owner in Michigan says freeze-up along the rails happens but a little gentle encouragement rolls it up.

If you use automatic car washes, Can You Take a Tonneau Cover Through a Car Wash? answers it for each style.

Check fit before you buy

Every cover here is built for one truck, bed length and generation, so measure first with our bed measuring guide and use the fit check on the product page. Then look at what is already in your bed. One G2 owner reports the Tacoma version mounts to the bed's tie-down rails, so those rails are not free for anything else. Another fitted a G2 to a 2019 Ram Rebel with RamBox storage. The RetraxPRO MX is not made for GM's factory bed-side storage boxes, and every retractable needs clear floor at the front of the bed for its canister. Towing a fifth wheel? The Revolver X4s spec sheet lists most fifth-wheel hitch setups as compatible.

Care and lifespan

Hard covers are low-maintenance, and most of the care is habit. Warranty length is the clearest published guide to lifespan. The RetraxONE MX carries 1 year. The G2 and SE carry 3 years, with the SE's struts and hardware covered for 1. The MX4, X4s, X4 TS and Solid Fold ALX carry 5 years. The RetraxPRO MX and XR carry a limited lifetime warranty. Read the warranty for the exact part you buy, because it varies by series.

  • Spread loads evenly. Every rating in this guide is for evenly distributed weight, so avoid resting a point load on one panel or slat.
  • Clear snow and ice from a retractable before you open it. Retrax makes this a warranty condition.
  • Seat the drain tubes carefully and check them after the first heavy rain.
  • Drive with a folding cover only in a position its maker approves. BAK's MX4 listing says it can be driven closed, part open or folded upright; check the manual for any other cover.
  • Wash the top with mild soap and water. UnderCover warns that abrasive cleaners dull the SE's finish.
  • Keep the tailgate locked. It is part of the cover's security whichever style you choose.

For install steps by style, see How to Install a Tonneau Cover.

Frequently asked questions

Who makes the best hard tonneau covers?

BAK makes the best hard covers in our range for most trucks: the BAKFlip MX4 for folding, the Revolver X4s for roll-up and the X4 TS for racks. Retrax leads the retractables with the PRO MX. UnderCover is our pick for a one-piece lid. We have not tested these covers, so this is based on specs, warranties and owner reviews.

Is the BAKFlip MX4 worth the money?

Yes for most trucks. At $1,199.99 it gives you a 400 lb rating, a 5-year warranty and 100% bed access, and 328 owners rate it 4.5. The G2 saves money but drops to 300 lb and a 3-year warranty. See the full MX4 review.

What is the best tonneau cover in 2026?

For most trucks it is the BAKFlip MX4, from $1,199.99. For wet weather we pick the Revolver X4s and for a key lock the RetraxPRO MX. Soft covers cost less if you do not need rigid panels, and our full ranking compares every type.

What is the most durable hard tonneau cover?

For load, the Extang Solid Fold ALX leads the covers in this guide at 600 lb. The RetraxPRO MX and XR follow at 500 lb with a limited lifetime warranty, the longest here. For the top surface, the BAKFlip FiberMax, from $1,249.99, has a fiberglass-reinforced top that resists dents, cuts and fading. Owner reports are the other test: one G2 owner saw panels sag, fade and crack within two years, and one RetraxONE MX owner says hail punched through the top. Ratings are for evenly distributed weight on the closed cover.

Are hard tonneau covers waterproof?

No. They are water-resistant, and owners of several covers report water at the tailgate edge. A seamless top such as the X4s has fewer joints for water to find than a folding cover. See Are Tonneau Covers Waterproof? for the full comparison.

Do hard tonneau covers lock?

Folding and roll-up covers latch shut from inside the bed, so they rely on a locked tailgate. Retractables such as the RetraxPRO MX add their own key lock, and a one-piece lid like the UnderCover SE locks with a key and holds the tailgate shut. For every other style, a tailgate that locks is part of the security.

Which hard tonneau cover has the most bed access?

Hard roll-ups and the struts-up position on hard folding covers give 100% of the bed. A retractable opens as far as you slide it, and the canister takes a strip of floor. A one-piece lid lifts on struts so you load over the sides or tailgate, and it has to come off for tall loads.

Can I put a rack on a hard tonneau cover?

Only on a rail model. The BAK Revolver X4 TS and RetraxPRO XR have integrated T-slot rails, while the MX4, X4s and PRO MX do not. Stay within both the rack maker's rating and the cover's own rating, and spread the weight.
