How we made this guide: picks and specs come from our catalog and fitment data, owner quotes come from verified reviews and the guide was drafted with AI help, then checked and edited by Trevor Hall.
The best hard tonneau cover for most Ford F-150 owners is the BAKFlip MX4, a hard folding cover from $1,199.99 on the F-150 that fits all three 2015 to 2026 beds, latches itself shut and folds flush to the cab. The UnderCover Select, from $899.99, is the least expensive hard cover we carry for the F-150. For a key lock and rack rails, pick the RetraxPRO XR from $2,299.99.

What fits your F-150: beds, years and factory options
Bed length and generation set the part number. Ford kept the same three bed lengths on the 13th-generation (2015 to 2020) and 14th-generation (2021 to 2026) trucks, but most brands build a separate part for each, so order by model year as well as bed.
| Ford calls it | Found on (2015 to 2026) | Inside floor (BAK) | Cover listings say | Picks with a 2021 to 2026 part |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5.5 ft | SuperCrew and every Raptor | About 67 in | 5'7" | All eight |
| 6.5 ft | Regular Cab, SuperCab and SuperCrew | About 78.9 in | 6'7" (some Revolver X4s parts say 6'6") | All eight (one-piece only without Pro Access) |
| 8 ft | Regular Cab and SuperCab | About 97.6 in | 8' or 8'2" | MX4, Flex, Solid Fold ALX and Revolver X4s |
Our bed measuring guide shows where to measure; the F-150 tonneau cover page filters covers to your year and bed.
Pro Access tailgate (2024 to 2026)
Ford's Pro Access tailgate, offered from 2024, has a section that swings open sideways like a door. In our fitment data it only changes the part for UnderCover's one-piece lids: the LUX and SE fit trucks without it, while the Elite and Elite LX add a 5.5 ft part for trucks with it. No one-piece lid we carry fits a 6.5 ft Pro Access bed.
Factory track, Pro Power and liners
If your bed has Ford's factory cargo-management track, check the clamps. One MX4 owner, truck not named, found the clamps sit in the way of the factory bed track, so the tie-down lugs and bed extender cannot slide past them. TruXedo builds separate Lo Pro parts for beds with and without the track, so pick the right one in the selector. Roll-N-Lock lists its 2015 to 2026 M-Series XT parts for 5.5 and 6.5 ft beds as not compatible with the track, along with several M-Series parts. Retrax EQ fitment notes warn the electric cover may not run in Pro Power Onboard generator mode. A drop-in plastic liner may need trimming for a Roll-N-Lock or Retrax canister or UnderCover's one-piece brackets; one 2016 F-150 owner had to cut his factory liner to fit a RetraxONE MX.
Raptor, Lightning, Flareside and 2027 trucks
Raptors use the 5.5 ft bed, but some covers list a Raptor part, so pick Raptor in the selector. The MX4 lists every Raptor generation, but check the newest closely: a 2025 Raptor owner says it fits the bed nicely, while a 2026 Raptor owner says it does not fit without heavily modifying the hold-down pieces for the fixed panel. Every pick except the Select also lists the Lightning. Every 2015 to 2026 F-150 has the Styleside box; for an older Flareside box, only two soft roll-ups in our range list a Flareside part: the Access LiteRider and TruXedo TruXport. For a 2027 truck, check the years on the part.
The 8 ft bed has fewer choices
Only four picks come in an 8 ft part: the MX4, Flex, Solid Fold ALX and Revolver X4s. For a locking retractable on the long bed, the RetraxPRO MX (from $2,249.99 on that bed) and the Roll-N-Lock M-Series (from $1,899.99) fit every 2015 to 2026 long bed; the M-Series gets a closer look further down.
Best overall: BAKFlip MX4

Best overall
BAKFlip MX4 Hard Folding Tonneau Cover
From $1,199.99 · F-150 owners who want a self-latching cover and the whole bed on demand.
The MX4 does the most things well on an F-150. Its Gen 3 aluminum-skinned panels carry 400 lb and latch themselves as you close the cover. Fold the panels forward and they lie flat against the cab to clear the full bed. BAK says the third brake light remains visible in every position. It fits all three 2015 to 2026 beds, the Lightning and every Raptor generation (see the 2026 Raptor note above). BAK puts the install at about 30 minutes and backs it for 5 years. The MX4 TS ($1,449.99) adds T-slot rails on 5.5 and 6.5 ft beds.

Pros
- Opens 100% of the bed, folded flush
- Fits 5.5, 6.5 and 8 ft beds
- 4.5 stars from 328 reviews
Cons
- Only as secure as your locked tailgate
- Some owners report seepage at the seams in hard rain
- No rack rails (that is the MX4 TS)
Skip it if you want a key lock on the cover itself; the MX4 relies on your locked tailgate.
“It’s built well and suits my needs perfectly. Seems to be pretty water tight for my F150”

Best value: UnderCover Flex

Best value
UnderCover Flex Hard Folding Tonneau Cover
From $1,099.99 · Owners who want a 400 lb hard cover that lifts off without tools.
The Flex matches the MX4's 400 lb rating for $100 less. It lifts off its rails without tools for full-bed loads; otherwise the panels fold part way or stand upright against the bulkhead. EPDM hinges and seals plus drain channels handle water. It fits all three 2015 to 2026 beds, the 2021 to 2026 Raptor and the Lightning, with a 3-year warranty. The BAKFlip G2 costs the same ($1,099.99) and has 253 owner reviews but carries 300 lb; see BAKFlip G2 vs MX4.
Pros
- 400 lb rating for less than the MX4
- Lifts off without tools
- Textured gloss black finish
Cons
- 3-year warranty against the MX4's 5
- No owner reviews on file yet
Skip it if you want a matte finish or a longer warranty.
Hard cover for under $1,000: UnderCover Select

Best under $1,000
UnderCover Select Hard Folding Tonneau Cover
From $899.99 · Budget buyers who still want aluminum panels and auto latches.
The Select is where hard covers start in our F-150 range. Its aircraft-grade aluminum panels carry 300 lb, and dual slam latches lock as you push it down. A release cable at each side of the tailgate opens it, so security comes from the locked tailgate. The panels fold to two-thirds, and UnderCover publishes no full-open position or tool-free removal for the Select. It installs in 30 minutes or less and carries a 3-year warranty on 5.5 and 6.5 ft beds from 2004 to 2026.
Pros
- A hard cover for under $1,000
- Auto latches, release from either side
- Short install
Cons
- 300 lb rating
- Two-thirds bed access
- No 8 ft, Raptor or Lightning part
Skip it if you haul tall loads every week or drive a long-bed work truck.
Heavy-load pick: Extang Solid Fold ALX

Best for heavy loads
Extang Solid Fold ALX Hard Folding Tonneau Cover
From $1,199.99 · Work trucks that stack gear, snow or sheet goods on the closed cover.
Extang lists up to 600 lb spread evenly across the closed Solid Fold ALX, the highest rating of any folding cover here, on 1 in thick TPO panels. Drop the tailgate, twist the rotary release and lift with one hand; it latches itself when closed. Folded, it clears about two-thirds of the bed. Tool-free clamps let it lift off for the rest; one owner times that at a minute. It fits all three 2015 to 2026 beds and the Lightning, with a 5-year warranty.

Pros
- 600 lb load rating
- One-hand twist release
- Lifts off without tools
Cons
- Two-thirds access unless removed
- One owner calls it a bit heavy to fold
- Buckles must be fastened to drive with it open
- Some owners report water getting in at the tailgate or near the cab
Skip it if you want the whole bed open without taking the cover off.
“Excellent Tri-fold hard cover. Installed on 2024 F-150. Easy installation, and easy to completely remove when you want full access to truck bed.”

Best hard roll-up: BAK Revolver X4s

Best hard roll-up
BAK Revolver X4s Hard Roll-Up Tonneau Cover
From $1,399.99 · Owners who want the full bed open with no canister or panels at the cab.
Roll it up and the Revolver X4s behaves like a soft cover, but aluminum slats sit under the vinyl and the closed top is rated for 400 lb. Locking rails engage its full length and slam latches catch as it closes, earning BAK's Level-3 security rating. It rolls onto a spool at the bulkhead, not into a canister, so you keep the full bed and a clear rear camera view. It fits all three beds from 2004 to 2026 and the Lightning, and BAK says it works with most fifth-wheel hitches. More roll-ups: our roll-up cover guide.

Pros
- The whole bed opens, with no canister
- Rated Level 3 for security by BAK
- One continuous top with no panel seams
Cons
- Plastic corner caps pop off on several owners' covers
- Owners in snow country report the locking rails freezing shut
- Rack rails are not built in, though the X4 TS has them
Skip it if you open the bed through freezing rain and snow most days, or if you need cross bars. The Revolver X4 TS ($1,549.99) adds T-slot rails to the same roll-up.
“The rails lock along the entire length of the bed to prevent the cover from being opened once its closed.”

Best for security and racks: RetraxPRO XR

Best for security and racks
RetraxPRO XR Retractable Tonneau Cover with T-Slot Rails
From $2,299.99 · Owners who leave tools in the bed or carry bikes, a tent or a rack.
The RetraxPRO XR is the pick when you want a key lock on the cover itself and rails on top. Double-wall aluminum slats carry 500 lb, and the key-lockable handle holds the cover shut or at any point along the rails, so you can open the bed without dropping the tailgate. That is why one F-150 owner with a tight garage chose it. Retrax still says a locked tailgate completes the setup. Full-length T-slot rails take racks and tents. It fits 5.5 ft beds from 2009 and 6.5 ft beds from 2015, with a limited lifetime warranty.

Pros
- Key lock that holds at any position
- 500 lb rating and T-slot rails
- Limited lifetime warranty
Cons
- $1,100 more than the MX4
- The canister takes floor space at the cab
- Owners report drain tubes that clog or freeze
Skip it if you need every inch of floor (one owner says the canister leaves the 16 inches of floor nearest the cab virtually useless) or drive an 8 ft bed, which takes the railless RetraxPRO MX.
“The integrated track lets me have my towers for a rooftop tent and still have a secure truck bed.”

Best lower-priced retractable: RetraxONE MX

Best lower-priced retractable
RetraxONE MX Retractable Tonneau Cover
From $1,549.99 · 5.5 and 6.5 ft bed owners who want a key lock for less than the XR.
The RetraxONE MX swaps the XR's slats for one sheet of aluminum-reinforced polycarbonate with no hinges or joints in the top. It still locks with a key at any point. Its 4.7 stars from 199 reviews are the best average of any retractable on our F-150 list, and a 2023 F-150 owner says it works well with the power tailgate. The trade-offs are a 200 lb rating, a 1-year warranty and no 8 ft part. The RetraxONE XR ($1,699.99) adds T-slots; our retractable cover guide compares the rest.

Pros
- Key lock at any position
- No seams in the top
- 4.7 stars from 199 reviews
Cons
- 200 lb load rating
- 1-year warranty
- The canister uses some floor at the cab
- Some owners report leaks at the tailgate end, and several had to swap the drain tubes to fit the bed's drain holes
Skip it if you load the closed cover or want a long warranty.
“I actually have one on my 19 F150 that has been flawless since the truck was new.”

Best one-piece lid: UnderCover Elite LX

Best one-piece
UnderCover Elite LX One-Piece Tonneau Cover
From $1,499.99 · Owners who want a paint-matched lid and one key for the whole bed.
UnderCover sprays the Elite LX to your factory paint code, though it does not promise a perfect match on a faded truck, and rates it for 500 lb. Its key lock secures the lid, which overlaps the tailgate and holds it shut too. The lid structure and factory paint carry a limited lifetime warranty; the gas struts and mounting hardware get 1 year. It also comes in a 5.5 ft part for 2024 to 2026 trucks with Pro Access. There is no 8 ft part, and setting the lid takes two people.

Pros
- Painted to your factory color code
- 500 lb rating and its own key lock
- Limited lifetime warranty on lid and paint
Cons
- Tall loads mean lifting the lid off
- The tailgate stays shut while the lid is locked
- No 8 ft part and no 6.5 ft Pro Access part
Skip it if you haul anything taller than the bed walls more than now and then.
How to choose a hard cover for your F-150
| If you mostly | Look at | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Haul tall loads like bikes or appliances | BAKFlip MX4 or Revolver X4s | Both open 100% of the bed without coming off |
| Leave tools in the bed overnight | RetraxPRO XR or Elite LX | A key lock on the cover; the Elite LX also holds the tailgate shut |
| Stack weight or snow on the cover | Solid Fold ALX | 600 lb rating |
| Carry bikes, a tent or a rack | RetraxPRO XR or MX4 TS | Built-in T-slot rails |
| Tow a fifth wheel | Revolver X4s | BAK lists it for most fifth-wheel setups |
| Run a crossover toolbox | Solid Fold Toolbox 2.0 $1,249.99 | Sits behind the box on 6.5 and 8 ft beds; see covers with toolboxes |
Security
Every folding and roll-up pick here releases from inside the bed, so it is only as secure as your locked tailgate. If tools stay in the bed, a key lock on the cover adds a second barrier: the RetraxPRO XR and RetraxONE MX lock with their own key, though Retrax says a locked tailgate still completes the setup. A one-piece lid such as the Elite LX locks the tailgate shut as well, as do most Roll-N-Lock parts.
Weather
No brand here sells its cover as fully waterproof. Seals stop most rain and drain tubes carry the rest out. Clear snow and ice before opening; Extang, Retrax and UnderCover make that a warranty condition.
Materials
The MX4, Flex and Select use aluminum panels. The Solid Fold ALX is the odd one out, with TPO panels an inch thick set in an aluminum frame. The Revolver X4s hides aluminum slats under vinyl, the RetraxPRO XR uses double-wall aluminum slats and the RetraxONE MX has one aluminum-reinforced polycarbonate sheet. The Elite LX is a single molded ABS lid. Load ratings climb from 200 lb on the RetraxONE MX to 300 lb on the Select, 400 lb on the MX4, Flex and Revolver X4s, 500 lb on the RetraxPRO XR and Elite LX and 600 lb on the Solid Fold ALX.
Rails and bed space
For a rack or tent, buy the rails now: the RetraxPRO XR, MX4 TS, RetraxONE XR and Revolver X4 TS have T-slots. Retractable canisters take some floor at the cab, which hurts most on the 5.5 ft bed. Browse all hard folding covers and retractable covers, or see our tri-fold vs roll-up comparison and hard folding cover guide.
Install video: BAKFlip MX4 on a 2024 F-150
This install on a 2024 F-150 shows where the MX4's rails and clamps land on the 14th-generation bed. Nothing is drilled. The drain tubes run through the bed's existing drain points, and the job needs only a socket or wrench set. Full steps: our MX4 install guide.
What each budget buys on the F-150
| Budget | What fits the F-150 (in our range) | Examples, from |
|---|---|---|
| Under $500 | Soft covers | Extang Trifecta 2.0 $469.99; TruXedo TruXport $349.99 |
| $500 to $1,000 | Soft covers plus one hard cover | TruXedo Lo Pro $519.99; UnderCover Select $899.99 |
| $1,000 to $1,500 | Most hard folding and roll-up covers, plus entry retractables | BAKFlip G2 $1,099.99; Retrax IX $1,199.99; Revolver X4s $1,399.99 |
| Over $1,500 | Most retractables and every electric cover | RetraxONE MX $1,549.99; Roll-N-Lock M-Series $1,699.99; RetraxPRO XR $2,299.99; Retrax EQ $2,799.99 |
The Retrax IX is the entry retractable: aluminum slats, three preset lock positions and a 2-year warranty, but no key lock.
Over $1,500: a locking retractable for every bed

Retractable for every bed
Roll-N-Lock M-Series Retractable Tonneau Cover
From $1,699.99 · Long-bed and work-truck owners who want a locking retractable.
On the 8 ft bed the Roll-N-Lock M-Series costs less than the RetraxPRO MX and still locks with a key. It puts vinyl over aluminum slats, can latch in three positions along the bed and locks with a keyed twist latch at the tailgate. Its canister is 7.25 inches deep and the warranty is 3 years, excluding water intrusion. Several owners report the rear latch popping open on bumpy roads, so check its adjustment often. Skip it if you would rather not cut a drop-in liner.

On a tighter budget: a soft cover
The least expensive hard cover we carry for the F-150 is the Select, from $899.99, so below that our range is soft covers, from $469.99 for the Extang Trifecta 2.0 and $519.99 for the TruXedo Lo Pro.

Budget alternative (soft)
TruXedo Lo Pro Soft Roll-Up Tonneau Cover
From $519.99 · Owners who want a low, tidy cover for well under hard-cover money.
The TruXedo Lo Pro sits just 3/4 inch above the bed rails because its rails mount inside the bed, and most versions lift out without tools. It has no lock or published load rating, and rain pools on its flat top until you drive. The warranty is limited lifetime. Skip it if valuables ride in the bed. For less, the Extang Trifecta 2.0 has 249 owner reviews and fits every 2015 to 2026 bed.

Frequently asked questions
What size tonneau cover do I need for my F-150?
Match your bed and model year. Listings call the 5.5 ft bed 5'7", the 6.5 ft bed 6'7" and the 8 ft bed 8' or 8'2", about 67, 79 and 98 inches inside at the floor. Our measuring guide shows where to put the tape.
What is the best tonneau cover for a 2024 F-150?
The BAKFlip MX4, from $1,199.99 on 2021 to 2026 trucks, suits most 2024 F-150s: its parts fit all three beds, and the Pro Access tailgate does not change them. Only one-piece lids need a Pro Access part.
Is a hard or soft tonneau cover better for an F-150?
Hard, if the cover must carry weight or add a sturdier barrier over tools: every hard pick here has a published load rating of 200 to 600 lb. Soft covers cost far less, from $469.99 for the Extang Trifecta 2.0 and $519.99 for the TruXedo Lo Pro, but a vinyl tarp can be cut open and the Lo Pro lists no load rating. Choose soft for weather cover on a budget and hard for a sturdier barrier, as long as the tailgate is locked.
Is a hard folding or retractable cover better on an F-150?
Hard folding covers cost less, and the MX4 folds flush to open the whole bed: it starts at $1,199.99 against $1,549.99 for the RetraxONE MX. The RetraxPRO XR and RetraxONE MX lock with their own key at any position and open with the tailgate up, but the canister uses floor space. Choose folding for value and tall loads, retractable for a key lock on the cover and for racks.
Are hard tonneau covers waterproof?
No, but good ones come close. Brands sell them as water-resistant and fit drain tubes for what slips past the seals. Our waterproof cover guide compares the tightest designs. One MX4 owner put a number on it:
“Install was straightforward and the cover works well. Tropical storm rain and maybe a half-cup of water came through.”
BAKFlip MX4 owner · 5 out of 5 stars
Can a hard tonneau cover go through a car wash?
Closed and latched, yes, but expect a little water inside. Folding covers have panel seams, so expect a little misting at the seams in a car wash, and keep a pressure washer off the bulkhead corners and seals. When you wash by hand, Retrax, Extang and TruXedo call for mild soap and water, and Extang voids its warranty for silicone vinyl conditioners.
Can I install a hard tonneau cover on my F-150 myself?
Yes. Every pick here mounts without drilling the truck. BAK puts the MX4 at about 30 minutes, and Retrax and Extang rate the XR and Solid Fold ALX at under an hour. Get a helper to lift any retractable or one-piece lid.
Is the BAKFlip MX4 worth the money on an F-150?
For most owners, yes. It costs $100 more than the BAKFlip G2 or UnderCover Flex. Over the G2 you gain 100 lb of load rating and two more warranty years. Over the Flex you gain two more warranty years and a long owner track record (4.5 stars from 328 reviews), though the Flex lifts off without tools. If you never need the full bed, the Select saves $300. Our BAKFlip MX4 review covers the owner complaints.
