How we made this guide: picks and specs come from our catalog and fitment data, owner quotes come from verified reviews and the guide was drafted with AI help, then checked and edited by Trevor Hall.
The best tonneau covers are the BAKFlip MX4 hard folder (best overall, from $1,199.99), the Extang Trifecta 2.0 soft tri-fold (best budget, from $469.99) and the key-locking RetraxPRO MX retractable (best for security, from $2,149.99). The MX4 is the best truck bed cover for most owners: it latches itself shut, carries 400 lb and folds flush to the cab when you need the whole bed.
In our range, soft covers run from $339.99 to under $800 and hard folding covers from $899.99 to under $2,400. Hard roll-ups run about $1,200 to $1,700 and one-piece lids about $1,300 to under $2,500. Retractables run about $1,200 to over $3,000. Prices below are starting prices across the trucks each cover fits.

The 6 types of tonneau cover and how each works
Cover type settles most of the trade-offs before brand does. This is how each type opens and where prices start in our catalog.
| Type | How it opens | Bed access | Security | From |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Soft roll-up | Vinyl on cross bows rolls up to the cab | Full | Locked by the tailgate | $349.99 |
| Soft folding | Vinyl on a frame folds in thirds | Two-thirds; all with it off | Locked by the tailgate | $339.99 |
| Hard folding | Rigid panels fold toward the cab | Two-thirds, or all on covers that stand at the cab | Auto latches; locked by the tailgate | $899.99 |
| Hard roll-up | Aluminum slats roll onto a spool at the cab | Full | Locking rails; locked by the tailgate | $1,199.99 |
| Retractable | Slats slide into a canister at the cab, by hand or motor | All but the canister | Own key on most | $1,191.19 |
| One-piece | A single lid lifts on gas struts | Off for tall loads | Own key; holds the tailgate shut | $1,299.99 |
Soft covers keep rain and prying eyes off your cargo for the least money, but vinyl can be cut. Most hard covers carry 300 to 600 lb (the RetraxONE MX is rated 200 lb) and add stiffer locks for about $900 to over $3,000 in our range.
Most folding and roll-up covers have no key. They release from inside the bed, so a locked tailgate locks the cover too. Most retractables and every one-piece lid carry their own key. Our guide to every type of truck bed cover goes deeper on each style.

How we picked
We did not test these covers on a truck. We picked our 2026 list from our own catalog: 63 tonneau cover series from 9 brands and about 2,400 part numbers. For each series we compared the spec sheet, the written warranty, how many of the 18 truck lines on our fit pages it fits and what owners say in the 3,927 reviews we have on file.
Each of the eight picks had to fit at least 14 of those 18 truck lines and carry a warranty of 3 years or more. UnderCover, TruXedo, Access, LOMAX and Pace Edwards have no owner reviews on file yet, so for their covers we lean on the spec sheet and say so.
Best overall: BAKFlip MX4

Best overall
BAKFlip MX4 Hard Folding Tonneau Cover
From $1,199.99 · Most trucks and most owners: a locked hard cover with the whole bed on demand.
The MX4 is where most owners should start. Its Gen 3 panels are aluminum skins over a polymer core rated for 400 lb. Each panel latches itself as you fold it shut, and the release sits inside the bed, so a locked tailgate locks the cover. Fold the panels forward and they stand flush against the cab, opening 100% of the bed while the third brake light stays visible.
It clamps to the factory bed rails in about 30 minutes with no drilling and carries a 5-year warranty. It fits all 18 truck lines, from $1,199.99 on most and $1,249.99 on HD beds, the Ranger, Gladiator and Ridgeline. Its 328 owner reviews average 4.5, the most reviews of any cover we sell. The BAKFlip G2, from $1,099.99, is the lower-priced step down. It folds flat to the cab too, but it is rated for 300 lb and covered for 3 years, against the MX4's 400 lb and 5 years. Read our BAKFlip G2 vs MX4 comparison for the full side-by-side.
Pros
- Full bed access without taking the cover off
- Auto-latching panels lock with the tailgate
- 5-year warranty; fits all 18 truck lines
Cons
- Water-resistant, not waterproof: some owners report drips at the panel seams and tailgate in heavy rain
- Panels standing at the cab block the rear window
- No rack rails (the MX4 TS adds them)
Skip it if you want rack rails or a clear rear window with the bed open. The Revolver X4s below rolls up behind the cab instead. Our best hard folding tonneau covers guide compares every hard folder we carry.
“Searched for about 6 months to find the tonneau cover. I really wanted the security of a hard top without sticking above the bed rails it checked those boxes. I also did not want to drill my truck bed. The install was super simple my wife and I had it on the truck in about a half an hour.”

Best budget: Extang Trifecta 2.0

Best budget
Extang Trifecta 2.0 Soft Folding Tonneau Cover
From $469.99 · Weather cover under $500 that lifts off in seconds for tall loads.
The Trifecta 2.0 is the soft cover to beat under $500. A leather-grain vinyl tarp rides on an aluminum frame with snap-on triple-fin seals at the rails, bulkhead and tailgate. The clamps tighten by hand, so there are no tools and no drilling. Release the rear pair and it folds toward the cab, opening about two-thirds of the bed. Release the front pair too and the whole cover lifts off.
It fits all 18 truck lines from $469.99 ($519.99 on the Ridgeline and Gladiator), carries a limited lifetime warranty and averages 4.5 stars from 249 owner reviews. Extang publishes no load rating for the top and voids the warranty if cargo presses against the tarp.
Pros
- Under $500 on almost every truck
- No tools to fit or remove
- Limited lifetime warranty
Cons
- Vinyl can be cut; it hides cargo rather than guarding it
- The front panel stays put, so two-thirds access unless you remove it
- Some owners say the rear spring latches need fiddling, and a loose cover can flap at speed
Skip it if theft is your worry, or if you haul tall loads every week and do not want to unclamp the cover each time. For a little more, the canvas-topped Trifecta Signature 2.0 is rated 4.7 by 279 owners.
“I wanted a semi to hard cover for the new Tundra, asked the Toyota fam and everyone said 2.0. Install took longer to read than it did to install, super simple and easy. Thought bed rails would be an issue, they make it easier to use. Not 100% water tight, but 95-97% is a fair enough score.”

Best hard cover under $1,000: UnderCover Select

Best hard cover under $1,000
UnderCover Select Hard Folding Tonneau Cover
From $899.99 · Hard panels and auto latches for the least money, if two-thirds access is enough.
The Select, from $899.99, is the entry-level hard cover in our range and our only one under $1,000. Its multi-layer aluminum panels are rated for 300 lb. Dual slam latches lock as you push it down, and the release cables sit inside the bed at each side of the tailgate, so there is no outside lock to attack. UnderCover rates the install at 30 minutes or less with nothing drilled to mount it.
The savings show on paper. The panels fold to two-thirds of the bed rather than all of it. The warranty is 3 years. The Gladiator part has you trim a marked section of the plastic bed cap, and every Toyota application needs a hole drilled for the drain tube. It fits 17 truck lines (not the Ridgeline), and with no owner reviews on file yet this pick rests on the spec sheet.
Pros
- Hard panels for under $1,000
- Latches lock automatically and release from either side
- Drivable folded at two-thirds
Cons
- Two-thirds bed access only
- 300 lb rating and 3-year warranty
- A drain-tube hole to drill on Toyotas and a bed-cap cut on the Gladiator
Skip it if you need the whole bed often. The BAKFlip G2 folds flat against the cab for about $200 more.

Best for security: RetraxPRO MX

Best for security
RetraxPRO MX Retractable Tonneau Cover
From $2,149.99 · Owners who leave tools in the bed and want a key-locked aluminum deck.
For security, we pick the RetraxPRO MX. Its double-wall aluminum slats carry 500 lb, the TraxLatch handle takes a key and the cover locks wherever you stop it, so you can open a foot of bed for groceries and lock the cover there. It works independently of the tailgate. Lock the tailgate too, since the cover guards the bed from above.
It fits 17 truck lines (not the Gladiator), from $2,149.99 on most and $2,249.99 on HD beds and the Ranger. Drain tubes carry water out of the bed, Retrax tests it from -40°F to 180°F and the warranty is limited lifetime for the original buyer. Owners rate it 4.6 from 295 reviews, though several say lifting the canister in takes two people.
Pros
- Key lock on the cover; locks at any opening
- 500 lb aluminum deck
- Limited lifetime warranty
Cons
- The canister takes a strip of floor at the front of the bed
- Some owners report drips in hard rain and fiddly drain-tube routing at install
- Costs nearly twice an MX4
- No rack rails (the RetraxPRO XR adds them)
Skip it if your budget stops near $1,500 or your tailgate has no lock: a one-piece lid such as the Elite LX holds the tailgate shut for you. The Retrax IX, from $1,199.99, is the lower-priced Retrax: aluminum slats, three preset lock positions, a release reached with the tailgate down and a 2-year warranty, on 10 truck lines. The Pace Edwards SwitchBlade, from $1,191.19, is the least expensive retractable we carry: aluminum panels under ArmorTek vinyl, a rear latch you pair with a locked tailgate and a 2-year warranty, on 8 truck lines. The RetraxONE MX, from $1,549.99, is rated 4.7 by 199 owners, but it carries 200 lb and a 1-year limited warranty. Our best retractable tonneau covers guide compares every one.
“Easy to install. Installed on 2018 Colorado in about 45 minutes. Looks great! Love the fact that I can open the cover and tailgate independently.”

Best hard roll-up: BAK Revolver X4s

Best hard roll-up
BAK Revolver X4s Hard Roll-Up Tonneau Cover
From $1,399.99 · The whole bed open in seconds with the rear window clear, plus a hard deck.
The Revolver X4s rolls up like a soft cover but rides on interlocking aluminum slats under a 70-grade vinyl skin, rated for 400 lb. Locking rails grip the cover along the full length of both sides, and BAK rates it Level 3 for security. Rolled up, it sits on a spool at the cab, leaving 100% of the bed open and the rear window and backup camera clear.
It clamps on in about an hour with no drilling. It fits all 18 truck lines from $1,399.99 ($1,479.99 on the Tacoma, Ranger, Gladiator, Ridgeline and every HD truck: Super Duty, Silverado HD, Sierra HD and Ram HD). The warranty is 5 years and owners rate it 4.5 from 250 reviews. The Revolver X2, from $1,299.99, swaps to 60-grade vinyl and a 3-year warranty.
Pros
- 100% bed access with nothing to lift off
- Rear window and camera stay clear
- Slash-resistant slats, full-length locking rails
Cons
- No key of its own; lock the tailgate
- Water drains through the bed, not through tubes
- Some owners report drips at the tailgate, and it can stiffen in hard cold
Skip it if you want rack rails. The Revolver X4 TS, from $1,549.99, is the same cover with T-slot rails. Our best roll-up tonneau covers guide sets the hard roll-ups against the soft ones.
“I had the BAKFlip on a previous truck but didn’t like that I couldn’t see out the back window if it was folded up. Other than that it was a great cover…the BAK Revolver is a perfect solution. I now have full access to the bed of the truck and can still see out of the back window.”

Best soft roll-up: TruXedo Lo Pro

Best soft roll-up
TruXedo Lo Pro Soft Roll-Up Tonneau Cover
From $519.99 · A low, tight soft cover that rolls to the cab in seconds.
The Lo Pro is the soft roll-up we would buy. Its rails mount inside the bed instead of on top of the bed rails, so the closed cover sits just 3/4" above the rail line. A spring tensioner keeps the leather-grain vinyl tight through hot and cold weather. A one-finger trigger latch releases it, and on most trucks the whole cover lifts out of its rails without tools.
It fits all 18 truck lines from $519.99 and one person can fit it in under an hour. TruXedo assembles it in South Dakota and gives the frame and fabric a limited lifetime warranty for the first owner. There are no owner reviews on file yet.
Pros
- Sits 3/4" above the rail line
- Self-adjusting tension through the seasons
- Comes off without tools on most trucks
Cons
- No lock; it latches at the tailgate
- Water can pool on the flat top until you drive
- TruXedo does not approve automatic car washes for it
Skip it if you leave valuables in the bed, since any vinyl top can be cut. The TruXedo TruXport, from $349.99, is the lower-priced TruXedo roll-up with a 5-year warranty.

Best one-piece: UnderCover Elite LX

Best one-piece
UnderCover Elite LX One-Piece Tonneau Cover
From $1,499.99 · A paint-matched lid with its own key, a 500 lb rating and a lock that holds the tailgate shut.
Among our picks, the Elite LX alone locks the tailgate for you. The Elite LX overlaps the bed caps and the tailgate, so one turn of the key secures both. UnderCover sprays it at its own paint line to your truck's factory paint code (124 codes across the series) or ships it unpainted for a body shop, though a lid painted outside UnderCover's factory loses the lifetime paint warranty. Gas struts lift it, the underside has a carpeted headliner and an LED light and the lid carries 500 lb.
It fits 14 truck lines from $1,499.99 ($1,549.99 on the Ranger and Super Duty) but not the Maverick, Ridgeline, Gladiator or Titan. UnderCover gives the lid and its factory paint a limited lifetime warranty, with 1 year on the struts and hardware. There are no owner reviews on file yet.
Pros
- Matches your paint code
- One key locks the lid and the tailgate
- 500 lb rating, carpeted underside and bed light
Cons
- Tall loads mean lifting the lid off, a two-person job
- The tailgate stays shut until you unlock the lid
- No promise of a perfect match on a sun-faded truck
Skip it if you haul tall loads every week. If paint is the point and the budget is tighter, the UnderCover LUX, from $1,299.99, is painted too and keeps an LED light and the lifetime paint warranty, but drops the carpeted headliner and the 500 lb rating.

Best electric: Retrax EQ

Best electric
Retrax EQ Electric Retractable Tonneau Cover with T-Slot Rails
From $2,799.99 · Push-button access from the factory key fob, plus T-slot rails for a rack.
The EQ opens from your truck's factory key fob, the Retrax app over Bluetooth or an optional touchpad in the cab. Anti-pinch protection stops it if something is in the way, and a manual disconnect lets you move it by hand. The aluminum cover is rated for 500 lb, T-slot channels in both rails take most racks and an LED strip lights the bed whenever it moves. Retrax gives it a 5-year warranty, two years more than its PowerTraxPRO MX at the same price.
Wiring is the catch. Owners describe connections behind the dash or kick panel, a Bluetooth pairing step that can be fiddly and installs of 2 to 4.5 hours. Retrax's warranty excludes water intrusion, and the EQ is not made for the GMC CarbonPro bed. The EQ fits 14 truck lines from $2,799.99, skipping the Maverick, Ridgeline, Gladiator and Ram HD. Owners rate it 4.5 from 30 reviews.
Pros
- Works from the factory key fob
- T-slot rails and a bed light built in
- 5-year warranty, 500 lb rating
Cons
- Wiring into the truck adds hours to the install
- Opens at a slow, steady pace
- App and fob pairing can take patience
As with any retractable, lock the tailgate too. Skip it if you want simple. The manual RetraxPRO MX does the same job for less money and has no wiring.
“I was really surprised of how small the canister really is. You loose almost no bed space in the truck. It is really silent as well. The only thing is that the Bluetooth connection is not that easy.”

The jump from soft to hard buys security and a load rating. From about $1,300 up, the extra money pays for a key lock on the cover, a paint match or a motor.

How to choose: match the cover to how you use the bed
| How you use the bed | Best type | Our pick | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Daily driving, mixed loads | Hard folding | BAKFlip MX4 | Locked most days, the whole bed when you need it |
| Tools left in the bed | Retractable with a key | RetraxPRO MX | Aluminum slats, locks at any opening |
| Tall loads every week | Hard roll-up | BAK Revolver X4s | 100% open in seconds, nothing to lift off |
| Racks, tents or overlanding | Cover with T-slot rails | RetraxPRO XR | The rack rides on the rails while the cover still opens |
| Fifth-wheel towing | Hard roll-up | BAK Revolver X4s | BAK lists most fifth-wheel setups as compatible |
| Snow country | Hard folding | Extang Solid Fold ALX | Rated 600 lb on the closed cover for snow load; brush it off before you open it |
| Looks first | Painted one-piece | UnderCover Elite LX | Sprayed to your paint code |
| Under $500 | Soft tri-fold | Extang Trifecta 2.0 | Tool-free, limited lifetime warranty |
If you plan to carry a rack, buy a cover with T-slot rails from the start: the BAKFlip MX4 TS, Revolver X4 TS, RetraxPRO XR or Retrax EQ. The XR's rails take a rack without giving up bed access. Then pick the version that matches your bed, because RamBox, CarbonPro, Deck Rail and Utili-Track beds all get their own part numbers.

Installing a tonneau cover: time, tools and help
Every pick here clamps to the bed rails, and none needs holes drilled to hold the cover on. Drain tubes are the usual exception, such as on Toyota versions of the UnderCover Select. Time and weight are what differ:
- BAKFlip MX4 and UnderCover Select: about 30 minutes.
- Extang Trifecta 2.0 and TruXedo Lo Pro: under an hour, hand tools or none.
- BAK Revolver X4s and RetraxPRO MX: about an hour; a helper makes squaring the rails and lifting the canister easier.
- UnderCover Elite LX: two people to set the lid on its brackets.
- Retrax EQ: owners report 2 to 4.5 hours with the wiring.
The video below shows a full MX4 Gen 3 install on a 2024 GMC Sierra, and the rail-and-clamp steps are much the same on most hard folding covers. Our tonneau cover install guide covers every type.
Care and lifespan
- Wash with mild automotive soap and water. Keep silicone and oil-based protectants off vinyl; Extang and TruXedo both exclude the damage they cause.
- Clear snow and ice before you open a hard cover. UnderCover and Retrax make it a warranty condition.
- Re-check the clamps after the first week of driving, as UnderCover and Retrax both ask.
- Never lubricate Retrax rails or bearings, and never drive with a roll-up part open and unstrapped.
Car washes depend on the cover. TruXedo approves the Deuce for one in writing but not the Lo Pro, and MX4 owners report a few drips at the seams after a car wash. Our car wash guide goes cover by cover.
Warranty length is the best written guide to lifespan, from 1 year on the RetraxONE MX to limited lifetime on the RetraxPRO MX, Trifecta 2.0 and Lo Pro. Owner reviews on file include Extang soft tri-folds still in good shape after 9 and 10 years. One BAKFlip served two Rams from 2015 to 2026. Older BAKFlip panels could age, says one owner who moved to a Revolver:
“I had a BakFlip hard folding cover on my previous truck for almost 7 years and for the most part it was amazing and held up really well. One on my minor complaints was that as it aged the panels got water logged and heavy which made folding it open and closed from just one side a little cumbersome.”

Frequently asked questions
What is the best website or place to buy tonneau covers?
Online or in a shop, an authorized dealer that checks fit by year, cab, bed length and factory options before you pay. Some brands only honor the warranty on covers from dealers they recognize, and TruXedo warns that covers from unauthorized sellers may be secondhand or missing parts. On our product pages, pick your truck and bed to see the exact part.
What are the best tonneau covers for the price?
Below $500 it is the Extang Trifecta 2.0. Below $1,000 it is the UnderCover Select for a hard cover or the TruXedo Lo Pro for a soft one. From about $1,200 it is the BAKFlip MX4.
Which tonneau cover is better, LOMAX or BAKFlip?
For most owners, the BAKFlip MX4. It folds flat against the cab for the whole bed and carries a 5-year warranty. The LOMAX Hard Tri-Fold, from $1,115.20, opens two-thirds of the bed (all of it once you lift the cover off) and carries 3 years, while the LOMAX Stance, from $1,287.90, closes most of that gap: it folds flat against the cab and is rated 400 lb, with the same 3-year warranty. LOMAX wins on looks, with four finishes including diamond plate and carbon fiber, at a price within $100 of the MX4 on most trucks.
Is a hard or soft tonneau cover better?
Hard, if security or a load rating matters: most hard covers carry 300 to 600 lb, while vinyl can be cut. Soft, if price and quick removal matter more: soft covers in our range run from $339.99 to under $800 and come off without tools. Our tri-fold vs roll-up comparison covers the next choice.
Are tonneau covers waterproof?
No. BAK, Retrax, Extang, TruXedo and UnderCover all call their covers water-resistant, not waterproof. Expect light misting at the seams or the tailgate in a hard storm, and keep anything that must stay dry in a sealed bin. Our guide to the most watertight tonneau covers compares the sealing on each type.
Which tonneau cover is the most secure?
A hard cover with its own key, backed by a locked tailgate. Retractables like the RetraxPRO MX lock at any position, and Retrax says a locking tailgate completes the setup. One-piece lids like the UnderCover Elite LX lock the tailgate for you, and so do most Roll-N-Lock retractables. Folding and roll-up covers are only as secure as the tailgate lock.
Can I drive with the tonneau cover open?
Yes, in the positions the maker allows. The MX4 drives with its panels secured upright at the cab, soft tri-folds drive folded with both straps buckled and roll-ups drive rolled and strapped. Retractables sit in their canister or lock at a set point, and the RetraxPRO MX locks wherever you stop it.
Can I use a tonneau cover with a fifth-wheel hitch?
Yes, if the cover opens the whole bed. BAK lists most fifth-wheel hitch setups as compatible with its Revolver X4s and X2 hard roll-ups, and the JackRabbit retractable clears most of them, according to Pace Edwards. Other types usually need the cover open or removed, so check the fit notes for your hitch before you tow.
