Ram 1500 Bed Size: 5'7", 6'4" and RamBox Dimensions by Year

Blue 2022 Ram 1500 TRX with a BAKFlip MX4 hard folding cover on the bed

How we made this guide: picks and specs come from our catalog and fitment data, owner quotes come from verified reviews and the guide was drafted with AI help, then checked and edited by Trevor Hall.

The Ram 1500 comes with a 5'7" bed or a 6'4" bed, and the previous body also offered an 8-foot bed. Ram's charts give the 5'7" box 67.4 inches at the floor and the 6'4" box 76.3 inches, both 51.0 inches wide between the wheel wells. The 5'7" box goes only on the Crew Cab; the 6'4" box is on the Quad Cab and Crew Cab, and on the Regular Cab in Ram's 2020 Canadian sheet.

The right Ram 1500 tonneau cover depends on that bed length and on whether the truck has RamBox. For example, the BAKFlip MX4 for a 2019 to 2026 truck with the 5'7" bed starts at $1,199.99. Below are the dimensions by year, what changed between bodies and which covers fit each bed.

Quick answer

5'7" bed: 67.4 in long at the floor, 51.0 in between the wheel wells, 66.4 in wall to wall. 6'4" bed: 76.3 in long, same widths. The 2019 to 2026 truck is 21.4 to 21.5 in deep; Ram's 2018 chart and 2019 Classic chart list 20.0 to 20.2 in. RamBox bed numbers are not published, so measure a RamBox truck yourself.

Ram 1500 bed dimensions by year

Every figure below comes from Ram's own specification charts: the US 2019 Ram 1500 brochure, the 2020 Ram 1500 Canadian sheet, Ram Canada's 2026 Ram 1500 specifications and Ram Trucks Canada's 2018 and 2019 Ram 1500 Classic charts. Volume for the current body comes from the 2019 and 2020 sheets; the 2026 sheet does not print it. Where a chart does not print a number, the table says "not published" and we have not estimated it. Dimensions are in inches. Length is measured at the floor with the tailgate closed.

Years Body Box name Cabs Cover label Length at floor Between wheel wells Wall to wall Depth Volume
2019 to 2026 Current (DT) 5 ft 7 in Crew Cab 5'7" 67.4 51.0 66.4 21.4 53.9 cu ft
2019 to 2026 Current (DT) 6 ft 4 in Quad Cab, Crew Cab 6'4" 76.3 51.0 66.4 21.5 61.5 cu ft
2018 and 2019 Classic Previous (DS) 5 ft 7 in Crew Cab 5'7" 67.4 51.0 66.4 20.0 Not published
2018 and 2019 Classic Previous (DS) 6 ft 4 in Regular Cab, Quad Cab, Crew Cab 6'4" 76.3 51.0 66.4 20.1 Not published
2018 and 2019 Classic Previous (DS) 8 ft Regular Cab 8' 98.3 51.0 66.4 20.2 Not published

Two things stand out. Length and width did not change between the two bodies: the 5'7" box is 67.4 inches long and the 6'4" box 76.3 inches on both. Depth did. Ram's 2019 charts list the current box about 1.4 inches deeper than the Classic's 5'7" box (21.4 against 20.0 inches). The current box also has a tailgate opening of 60.0 inches in the 2019 brochure.

Ram's charts print the box width under different labels. The 2018 chart calls 66.4 inches "bed width at wall", while the 2019 brochure calls it "cargo width". Both give 66.4 inches, the widest figure Ram prints for the box. The 51.0 inches between the wheel wells is the number that limits flat cargo.

2019 to 2026 Ram 1500 (current body)

Ram launched this body for 2019 and kept selling the previous truck beside it as the Ram 1500 Classic. The current truck is offered with two boxes in the sources we have: the 5'7" on the Crew Cab and the 6'4" on Quad and Crew Cabs. Ram's 2019 brochure, its 2020 sheet and Ram Canada's 2026 Ram 1500 specifications print the same box figures: 67.4 inches long on the 5'7" box and 76.3 inches on the 6'4", 51.0 inches between the wheel wells, 66.4 inches at the widest and 21.4 or 21.5 inches deep. So the table holds for every year of this body, including the 2025 refresh. Ram's 2020 Canadian sheet also lists the 6'4" box on the Regular Cab.

Parts for this body are listed from 2019 through 2026, and a few brands already list 2027. The TRX uses the 5'7" parts, with one catch: it has a bed bar. Retrax lists the RetraxONE XR, and the RetraxPRO MX in its 5'7" RamBox version, as incompatible. The Pace Edwards JackRabbit and RetraxPRO FRC-4000 EZ-OFF only work once the bar is taken off. The multifunction (split swing-gate) tailgate offered from 2019 does not change the bed size, but only 14 of the 57 cover series in our fitment data list a part for it, so pick it in the vehicle selector.

2019 to 2024 Ram 1500 Classic (previous body)

The Classic is the old DS truck that stayed in production next to the redesign. Cover listings run through 2023 or 2024. Brands generally make one part per body even when the bed lengths match, which means a Classic uses the 2009 to 2018 part. Ram's 2019 Classic chart lists the same three boxes as 2018, with identical length and width figures. Only the 2019 chart is in our sources, so figures for 2020 to 2024 Classics are not listed here.

The 8-foot box is on this body only, and Ram's chart shows it on the Regular Cab. Roll-N-Lock labels that bed 8'2" while most brands use 8', so read the fit note on the part before you order.

2009 to 2018 Ram 1500 (previous body)

Ram's 2018 chart covers this body's 5'7", 6'4" and 8-foot boxes with the figures in the table. Ram's sheets for 2009 to 2017 are not in our sources, so Ram's own dimensions for those years are not listed here. What our fitment data does show is the bed labels cover makers use: the 5'7" bed on parts for 2009 to 2018, the 6'4" bed on parts back to 2002 and the 8-foot bed on parts for 2009 to 2018. Listings through 2010 carry the Dodge name. BAK's BAKFlip FiberMax, a fiberglass hard folding cover, is shown below on a 2016 truck of this body.

Older Dodge Ram 1500 beds

For trucks before 2009 we have no maker dimensions, only the labels on cover listings. They show a 6'4" bed on parts for 2002 to 2008, an 8-foot bed on parts for 1994 to 2008 and a 6'6" bed on parts for 1994 to 2001. Because those labels are the cover brands' and not Ram's, measure an older truck before you buy anything sized to a bed.

RamBox and the bed numbers

RamBox is the pair of lockable storage bins built into the bed sides. Ram's charts do not list separate dimensions for a RamBox bed, so do not reuse the standard-box figures above for one. Ram has published the bins themselves. When it lengthened RamBox for the 2012 model year, Ram listed the bins at 50.5 inches long on the 5'7" box and 60 inches long on the 6'4" box, with 7.3 and 8.6 cubic feet of bin storage, and said each bin is as wide as the wheel well. We have no Ram figures for the 2019 to 2026 RamBox. The bins take space from the sides of the bed, and the width at the wall in particular is no longer the number you can use.

The bins matter for covers more than for length. Many covers are sold in a standard version and a RamBox version, and the standard one is not made for a RamBox truck. In our fitment data, 29 of the 57 series that fit the Ram 1500 have a RamBox part for the current body, and 16 have one for the older trucks and the Classic. Expect a RamBox part to run a little above the From price on a card; the vehicle selector shows your exact figure. Our guide to the best tonneau covers for the Ram 1500 with RamBox compares the ones that clear the bins.

Why a cover is listed at a different size

Ram names its boxes in feet and inches, and for the Ram 1500 the cover labels are close to those names: Ram's 5 ft 7 in box is listed as 5'7" and its 6 ft 4 in box as 6'4". That is not true of every truck. Ford sells the F-150 with a 5.5-foot box that reads about 67 inches, so cover listings call it 5'7". The Ram's 67.4-inch floor is about the same, so a bed listed 5'7" on a Ram and on an F-150 is about the same length but is not interchangeable, because the parts are made for each truck's rails and tailgate.

The 8-foot bed is where Ram owners see the odd label. Roll-N-Lock lists it as 8'2", and the maker's chart gives 98.3 inches at the floor. Both labels mean the same 8-foot box, so match the part by the year and body in its fit note. A 6'6" label belongs only to the older Dodge Ram, 1994 to 2001.

Bed label on covers Years with parts listed Body
5'7" 2009 to 2026 Both
6'4" 2002 to 2026 Older Dodge Ram, previous and current
8' (Roll-N-Lock: 8'2") 1994 to 2018; Classic to 2023 or 2024 Older Dodge Ram and previous
6'6" 1994 to 2001 Older Dodge Ram

How to check your bed in three steps

  1. Clear the bed and close the tailgate. Hold a tape against the inside of the front bed wall at the top of the side rail.
  2. Read it along the rail at the inside face of the closed tailgate. Measure both sides and keep the shorter number.
  3. Divide by 12. A reading near 76 inches is the 6'4" bed, one near 67 inches the 5'7" and one near 98 inches the 8-foot bed on 2018 and older trucks and the Classic. Note your model year, your body and whether you have RamBox.

What fits in a Ram 1500 bed

The number that matters for flat cargo is 51.0 inches between the wheel wells. A 4 by 8 sheet of plywood is 48 inches wide, so it lies flat on the floor between the wells with 3 inches to spare. It is 96 inches long, which is longer than the 76.3-inch floor of the 6'4" box by 19.7 inches and longer than the 67.4-inch floor of the 5'7" box by 28.6 inches, so in either box the sheet needs the tailgate down to carry it. The 8-foot box has a 98.3-inch floor and holds the sheet inside with the tailgate closed. For a dirt bike or any long load, compare its length with the floor: 67.4 inches in the 5'7" box and 76.3 inches in the 6'4". Anything longer rides with the tailgate down, and Ram lists the tailgate opening at 60.0 inches wide on the current truck.

Above the wells the bed is wider: 66.4 inches wall to wall, so wide loads can ride on top of the wells. Depth gives you the height before the load clears the bed sides: about 20 inches on the Classic and 21.4 to 21.5 inches on the 2019 to 2026 truck. For volume, Ram lists 53.9 cubic feet for the current 5'7" box and 61.5 cubic feet for the 6'4" box, a 7.6 cubic foot difference.

A cover can change the usable bed too. One RetraxPRO MX owner on a 2019 Ram 1500 notes the canister at the cab end:

“Be aware that it will eat about 1 foot of space both across the bed and downward.”

RetraxPRO MX owner · 5 out of 5 stars

A hard folding or soft folding cover leaves the whole bed floor free; a retractable puts a canister at the cab end.

Frequently asked questions

What size is the bed on a Ram 1500?

The Ram 1500 bed is 5'7" or 6'4", and the previous body also had an 8-foot bed on the Regular Cab. The 5'7" bed measures 67.4 inches at the floor and the 6'4" bed 76.3 inches, per Ram's charts.

How long is a Ram 1500 Crew Cab with a 5.7 bed?

The bed itself is 67.4 inches long at the floor with the tailgate closed, which Ram calls a 5 ft 7 in box. The Crew Cab is the only cab offered with the 5'7" box in the sources we have. Ram's charts here do not list the overall truck length, so check the maker's sheet for your year.

Does RamBox change the bed size?

Yes, it takes space from the sides of the bed. Ram's charts do not publish RamBox figures for the bed, so we do not give one. On 2012 and later previous-body trucks Ram lists the bins at 50.5 inches long on the 5'7" box and 60 inches on the 6'4" box. For covers, RamBox changes which part you need, because most covers come in a RamBox and a standard version.

Will a 2019 or newer cover fit a Ram 1500 Classic?

Not by bed length alone. The bed lengths match between bodies, but most brands sell separate parts for each body, and a Classic takes the 2009 to 2018 part.

What bed sizes do the Ram 2500 and 3500 have?

Cover listings give the 2003 to 2026 Ram 2500 and 3500 a 6'4" or an 8-foot bed, and some brands list the 8-foot as 8'2". Ram's own HD dimensions are not in our sources, so measure before you buy.

Which Ram 1500 cab has the 8-foot bed?

Ram's 2018 and 2019 Classic charts list the 8-foot box on the Regular Cab only. Ram's 2019, 2020 and 2026 sheets for the current truck print figures only for the 5'7" and 6'4" boxes.
