How we made this guide: picks and specs come from our catalog and fitment data, owner quotes come from verified reviews and the guide was drafted with AI help, then checked and edited by Trevor Hall.
The best tonneau covers with a lock are the RetraxPRO MX (from $2,149.99), the UnderCover SE (from $1,349.99) and the Roll-N-Lock M-Series (from $1,699.99), and a keyed hard cover runs from about $1,300 to over $2,000 in our range. The most secure setup is a hard cover with its own key that also keeps the tailgate shut: the UnderCover SE (one-piece lid) or, on most parts, the Roll-N-Lock M-Series (retractable). If you want the bed open at any point, the RetraxPRO MX is the best keyed cover, paired with a locked tailgate.
Covers lock in two ways: most latch through the tailgate, and a few have a key of their own. The BAK Revolver X4s (from $1,399.99) is the hard roll-up with locking rails. No cover stops a determined thief with a blade or a pry bar. A cover keeps the bed out of sight and makes a theft slower, and the harder types (hard folding, hard roll-up, retractable and one-piece) are far tougher to defeat than vinyl. Whichever you pick, lock the tailgate: most covers are only as secure as that tailgate lock.

The three ways a tonneau cover locks
Every lockable cover falls into one of three groups. Knowing which group a cover is in tells you more about its security than any marketing line.
1. Latches released from inside the bed
This is how folding covers, roll-ups and most soft covers lock. The cover latches itself when you close it, and the release sits inside the bed or under the tailgate. To open it you drop the tailgate and pull the release. So a thief cannot work the latch until the tailgate is open, and the tailgate lock is the real lock. On a BAKFlip MX4, BAK says nobody can open the closed cover from outside after the tailgate is shut and locked.
The weak point is the tailgate itself. On a Revolver X4s the release cord is reachable once the tailgate is down, and Extang's Solid Fold ALX is released with the tailgate down. A truck with an unlocked tailgate has an unlocked cover.
2. A key lock on the cover
Retractables and one-piece lids can carry their own key. The Retrax covers use a key-locking handle that holds the cover at any point on its track, the Roll-N-Lock M-Series uses a keyed twist latch and the Pace Edwards JackRabbit uses a key lockable twist lock. On the Retrax and the JackRabbit the key locks the cover only, so you still lock the tailgate to keep someone from reaching over or around the cover.
Two designs reach further. A one-piece lid like the UnderCover SE, and the Roll-N-Lock M-Series with its tailgate extrusion, stop the tailgate from being lowered while the cover is shut and locked, on most parts. Not every Roll-N-Lock owner gets that: some with a newer A-Series or M-Series XT say the cover no longer engages the tailgate. Your install sheet shows what your part does, and a locked tailgate is still sensible.

3. Rotational locking rails
The BAK Revolver X4s locks along its length rather than at a handle. Its patented rotational locking rails grip the cover the full length of the bed, and slam latches shut it without a separate step. The spec sheet lists the cover as Level-3 rated. Like every roll-up, it still depends on a locked tailgate.
How we picked
We did not test these covers ourselves. Every call here comes from published specs, written warranties and what owners say in their reviews. We started with the lockable covers in our catalog across every hard type, then added one soft roll-up for comparison. For each we read the security line on the spec sheet, noted whether the cover has a key of its own and read the owner reviews on file when we wrote this guide: 200 each for the RetraxPRO MX, the Revolver X4s and the BAKFlip MX4, 199 for the RetraxONE MX, 149 for the M-Series and 90 for the Solid Fold ALX. We have since read all 173 JackRabbit reviews (4.6 stars) and 200 of the UnderCover SE's 226 (4.8 stars) for lock and latch trouble, and their sections give the counts. We do not publish theft ratings we cannot source, so you will see "Level 3" only where BAK states it.
Retractable covers with a key lock
Retractables are the covers most buyers mean when they ask for a lock. The deck is a set of aluminum slats or one sheet that slides forward into a canister at the bulkhead, and a key lock holds it wherever you leave it. You can see every retractable we carry, or read the full comparison in our guide to the best retractable tonneau covers.
Best overall lock: RetraxPRO MX

Best overall lock
RetraxPRO MX Retractable Tonneau Cover
From $2,149.99 · Key lock at any point, opens with the tailgate up or down.
The security line on the spec sheet reads key-lockable TraxLatch handle that opens independently of the tailgate. In plain terms you can slide the cover back a few feet, lock it there against a tall load and leave the rest of the bed shut. The exposed stretch of bed stays within reach, so this is a lock for the covered part only. The double-wall aluminum deck carries 500 lb spread evenly, and the warranty is limited lifetime. It fits 17 of the 18 truck lines we cover.
Owners like the lock. One says everyone likes how it can be locked and that it makes the bed secure. Another reports a cover that sometimes retracts when locked in a partially open position, so test the stop position the first week. One owner who fitted it in the rain found the lock frozen the next morning, so keep the key slot dry in winter.
“Even if I open it and slide it a few inches or open it all the way I can lock in any position I want to.”
RetraxPRO MX owner · 5 out of 5 stars
Pros
- Key lock holds at any position
- Opens with the tailgate up or down
- 500 lb deck and limited lifetime warranty
Cons
- Priced above the RetraxONE MX
- The key secures the cover, not the tailgate
- Water gets in for some owners, and some drain tubes do not fit the factory holes
Skip it if your budget is tighter. The RetraxONE MX below keeps the key lock at a lower price.
Best value key lock: RetraxONE MX

Best value key lock
RetraxONE MX Retractable Tonneau Cover
From $1,549.99 · Same key-lock idea for less, with a lighter deck.
The ONE MX swaps the aluminum slats for one aluminum-reinforced polycarbonate sheet with no joints across it, and it is key-lockable in any position along the rails. It carries 200 lb rather than 500 lb and a 1-year limited warranty rather than the PRO's limited lifetime. Owners rate it 4.8 from 289 reviews. Lock comes up in the owner reviews we read for the ONE MX more than for any other cover here. Most of it is praise, but owners also report a key that broke off in the lock on its first turn, a locked cover that a load pressing on it pushed along the track, and a lock on one side only that lets the other edge lift (one owner measures about 3/4 of an inch).
One owner who bought a second cover when changing trucks calls it one of the best locking mechanisms on the market. Another likes that the exterior lock means you do not have to open the tailgate to open the cover.
“I appreciate the exterior locking mechanism not having to open the tailgate to open the cover is great.”
RetraxONE MX owner · 5 out of 5 stars
Pros
- Key lock that works wherever you stop the deck
- A single sheet with no seams across it
- Lower price than the PRO MX
Cons
- Lighter 200 lb rating and a 1-year warranty
- The key secures the cover, not the tailgate
- Lock sits on one side only; some owners report the other edge lifting or the deck sliding under pressure
- Water finds its way in for several owners, at the sides or the tailgate
Skip it if the closed cover doubles as a shelf for heavy gear. Step up to the PRO MX for that.
Keyed twist latch: Roll-N-Lock M-Series

Widest fit
Roll-N-Lock M-Series Retractable Tonneau Cover
From $1,699.99 · Keyed twist latch, three stopping positions and a part for all 18 truck lines.
The M-Series is vinyl over aluminum slats, with ratchet latches at three positions and a keyed twist latch. The spec sheet says it locks with the built-in tailgate extrusion, and on most parts the closed, locked cover holds the tailgate shut. Owners rate it 4.7 from 126 reviews, and the warranty is 3 years limited. The canister is 7.25 inches deep, so it uses a strip of bed floor.
One Ridgeline owner explains how the tailgate interaction works in practice: you unlock the cover first, then open the tailgate. Because the newer XT parts do not always engage the tailgate, check the install sheet for the part you order and lock the tailgate anyway. The lock keyword appears in 2 of the 149 reviews we read, and one 1-star owner reports a faulty lock that sometimes unlocks itself and retracts. That is a single review, but it is worth knowing that a keyed lock still needs to latch cleanly each time.
“Just FYI, I installed this on a Ridgeline, and this model Roll-N-Lock does lock to the tailgate.”
Roll-N-Lock M-Series owner · 5 out of 5 stars

Pros
- Keyed twist latch and three open positions
- Fits all 18 truck lines we cover
- Flap over the key slot helps stop it freezing shut
Cons
- Canister takes 7.25 inches of bed floor
- 3-year limited warranty excludes water intrusion
- No load rating published
Skip it if you need to stack heavy loads on top, since no rating is published for the deck.
Pace Edwards JackRabbit: key lock, 4.6 stars from 173 reviews

Keyed retractable that stops every 12 inches
Pace Edwards JackRabbit Manual Retractable Tonneau Cover
From $1,442.44 · Key lockable twist lock, a stop every 12 inches and a five year limited warranty.
The JackRabbit is aluminum panels with a bonded ArmorTek overlay and a key lockable twist lock. Latch positions come every 12 inches, so you can stop the deck wherever the load ends. The warranty is five years limited, longer than the M-Series and the RetraxONE MX. It fits 11 of our truck lines.
The JackRabbit has 173 owner reviews on file, averaging 4.6 stars. We read all of them: 23 of the 173 praise the lock or say the bed stays secure and 3 report lock or latch trouble: one says the locking mechanism needs reattaching; one says the deck keeps latching in a notch before it is all the way open unless you hold the key while walking it back; one says that on a truck with a factory rail system the latch needs a larger screw and nuts or the cover tends to open after rough roads. Three owners add that the tailgate needs a lock of its own. One F-350 owner describes an attempted break-in that damaged the cover but did not open it:
“Had a guy try to break into my f350 truck bed. They jumped on the cover repeatedly to the point they busted part of the cover out of the track bending the aluminum stays. The cover still didn’t come unlocked and they didn’t even get enough room to get acces to the truck bed.”
Pace Edwards JackRabbit owner · 5 out of 5 stars
Pros
- Key lockable twist lock
- Stops every 12 inches
- Five year limited warranty
- 4.6 stars from 173 reviews
Cons
- No load rating published
- The key locks the cover, not the tailgate
Skip it if you want to lock the deck at any point rather than every 12 inches. The RetraxPRO MX locks anywhere along its track.
Locking rails: BAK Revolver X4s

Best locking rails
BAK Revolver X4s Hard Roll-Up Tonneau Cover
From $1,399.99 · Hard roll-up with rotational locking rails along the whole bed.
The Revolver X4s has no key. Its rotational locking rails and automatic slam latches hold the cover shut along its length, and BAK rates the security Level 3. It carries 400 lb on the closed cover, fits all 18 truck lines and has a 5-year warranty. Owners rate it 4.6 from 1,492 ratings. When it rolls open it leaves the rear window and camera view clear. You can find the full comparison with its rivals in our guide to hard roll-up covers.
An owner who wanted a cover that locks like a hard cover found the rails do that job, and another says the cover and tailgate together keep boxes out of sight and safe. The lock keyword appears in 6 of the 200 reviews we read. One owner notes that the side rail locking mechanism sometimes misses its groove when the cover is freshly unrolled, so check that the rails seat each time.
“The rails lock along the entire length of the bed to prevent the cover from being opened once its closed.”
BAK Revolver X4s owner · 5 out of 5 stars

Pros
- Rails lock the cover along the whole bed
- Level 3 security rating from BAK
- 400 lb rating and 5-year warranty
Cons
- No key and no separate lock
- Needs a locked tailgate
- Some owners report leaks at the tailgate edge
Skip it if you want a cover you can lock at a partly open position. A Revolver locks only when fully closed.
One key for the lid and the tailgate: UnderCover SE

Locks the tailgate too
UnderCover SE One-Piece Tonneau Cover
From $1,349.99 · One-piece lid with a key that also holds the tailgate shut.
The UnderCover SE is a single molded lid. Turn its one key and the lid is secured, and the lid keeps the tailgate from dropping, so one key secures both. UnderCover's other one-piece lids, such as the paint-matched Elite LX (from $1,499.99), work the same way. The SE lid lifts on struts and comes off for tall loads, and the X-Effect underside is rated 400 lb evenly distributed. The warranty is 3 years limited, with a year on the struts and hardware. The one-piece covers in our range run from about $1,300 to over $2,400.
The SE has 226 owner reviews, averaging 4.8 stars. Of the 200 reviews we checked, 15 praise the lock or say the bed stays secure and 5 report lock or latch trouble: latch plates and rods that took adjusting or came too short; a lock that was hard to lock and then almost impossible to unlock; plastic clips holding the locking bar rod that broke in high wind. A 1-star owner confirms the lid holds the tailgate and counts it a nuisance, since you cannot lower the tailgate without opening the lid first. One 5-star owner says someone could get in if they really tried:
“The single cam lock is simple and easy, but not rock solid.”
UnderCover SE owner · 5 out of 5 stars
Pros
- One key locks the lid and the tailgate
- Rigid lid that does not flex like vinyl
- Lid comes off for tall loads
- 4.8 stars from 226 reviews
Cons
- You reach the bed by lifting the lid
- Struts and hardware carry only a 1-year warranty
Skip it if you carry bulky loads most days. A folding or retractable cover opens more of the bed more quickly.
Hard folding covers: locked tailgate required
Hard folding covers have no key. They latch as you close them and rely on the tailgate lock. Our hard folding covers start under $900 in our range, so they are also the least expensive hard way to lock a bed. Few owners of these covers report lock trouble: in the reviews we read, one Solid Fold ALX owner and no BAKFlip MX4 owner describe a lock problem, though one MX4 owner wishes the last panel latch were metal.
Best hard folding cover: BAKFlip MX4

Best hard folding lock for most trucks
BAKFlip MX4 Hard Folding Tonneau Cover
From $1,199.99 · Automatic latching panels, 400 lb rating and a 5-year warranty.
The MX4 has automatic latching panels with reinforced latch housings and a 5-year warranty, and it folds flush against the cab for 100% of the bed. Owners rate it 4.6 from 5,025 ratings. BAK says nobody can open a closed MX4 from outside after the tailgate is shut and locked, so the cover is as secure as your tailgate lock. One reviewer wished the latch on the last panel were metal rather than plastic.
“I only wish that the locking latch on the last panel was made out of metal instead if plastic.”
BAKFlip MX4 owner · 5 out of 5 stars
Pros
- Latches automatically as you close it
- 100% bed access with the cover folded
- 400 lb rating and 5-year warranty
Cons
- No key, so it relies on the tailgate lock
- Some owners report leaks
- Some owners report damaged parts on arrival
Skip it if you want a key on the cover itself. A Retrax, Roll-N-Lock or JackRabbit has one.
Highest load rating: Extang Solid Fold ALX

Strongest top for gear
Extang Solid Fold ALX Hard Folding Tonneau Cover
From $1,199.99 · Auto-latching rotary release and a 600 lb rating.
The ALX uses a Secure Rotary Release system that latches itself on closing and is released with the tailgate down, so a locked tailgate again carries the security. It is rated up to 600 lb, has a 5-year limited warranty and opens two thirds of the bed with the panels folded and strapped. Owners rate it 4.6 from 97 reviews. Some owners report leaks at the cab end or the tailgate latches.
“Once the lift gate is locked nobody can access your truck bed with the cover in place.”
Extang Solid Fold ALX owner · 5 out of 5 stars
Pros
- Auto-latching rotary release
- Rated up to 600 lb
- 5-year limited warranty
Cons
- Opens only two thirds of the bed
- No key lock
- A few report leaks, one only while the truck sat parked in rain
Skip it if you want the full bed open with the cover folded. The BAKFlip MX4 stands upright against the cab.
Soft covers deter but do not secure
Soft covers are vinyl stretched over bows or aluminum, and they are the least secure option here. The Access Original (from $560.15) has AutoLatch II dual side locking, and it still depends on a locked tailgate. A blade goes through vinyl far faster than through aluminum or ABS. Soft covers start far below the hard types, with soft roll-ups from about $350 and soft folding covers from about $340 in our range, and they keep the bed out of sight. If theft is the worry, buy a hard type. For the wider comparison, see soft versus hard tonneau covers.
The more rigid the cover, the more a lock is worth. Hard folding and hard roll-up covers need a tool and noise to defeat while the tailgate is locked, retractables add a key and one-piece lids add the tailgate too. Budget follows the same order. Expect hard folding covers from under $900, hard roll-ups at roughly $1,200 to $1,700 and retractables across a wide band that tops $3,100 at the high end. See every type side by side in our guide to the types of truck bed covers and the hard cover roundup in best hard tonneau covers, or browse all tonneau covers to find your truck.

Getting the most from a cover lock
- Lock the tailgate every time. Check that your tailgate locks with your key or fob.
- Keep valuables out of sight even under a hard cover, and do not leave anything in the bed you could not stand to lose.
- On a retractable, clear snow and ice before opening it. Retrax makes that a warranty condition, and a frozen lock or track can stop the cover opening.
- Keep the key slot clean and dry. Roll-N-Lock fits a flap over its key slot so the lock does not freeze shut, and on other keyed covers a dry lock lubricant before winter helps the key turn.
- Keep a spare key somewhere other than the truck if your cover has one.
Adding a tailgate lock
Many newer trucks lock the tailgate with the doors, while older work trucks may have no tailgate lock at all. A tailgate lock kit, keyed or wired into the central locking, is what makes a latch-only cover secure. Check that the kit fits your tailgate before ordering.
Frequently asked questions
Do any tonneau covers lock?
Yes. Most covers latch shut and rely on a locked tailgate, while the Retrax covers, the Roll-N-Lock M-Series, the Pace Edwards JackRabbit and one-piece lids such as the UnderCover SE have a key of their own. The BAK Revolver X4s locks along its rails with no key.
What is the best lockable tonneau cover?
Among the covers we carry, the RetraxPRO MX is the best lockable cover for most trucks, since its key lock works at any point. If you want the tailgate secured by the same key, pick the UnderCover SE or the Roll-N-Lock M-Series.
What is the best anti-theft truck bed cover?
A rigid cover with a key and a locked tailgate. In our range that means the UnderCover SE or the Roll-N-Lock M-Series, whose key also keeps the tailgate shut on most parts, or a keyed Retrax or a Revolver X4s with the tailgate locked. No cover stops a determined thief, and soft covers deter rather than secure.
How do you lock a tonneau cover?
It depends on the type. Folding and roll-up covers latch as you close them, then you lock the tailgate. A keyed retractable locks with a turn of the key on the handle or twist latch, and a one-piece lid like the SE locks with one key.
Do tonneau covers lock with the tailgate?
Most latch from inside the bed or with the tailgate down, so a locked tailgate keeps the cover shut. The Roll-N-Lock M-Series also locks with its built-in tailgate extrusion, and the SE lid holds the tailgate shut.
Can a thief break into a tonneau cover?
A determined thief can break into any cover. Hard covers take effort and make noise, but vinyl can be cut. A locked tailgate and a hard cover with a key raise the effort required.
Is a soft tonneau cover secure?
Not very. A soft cover keeps the bed out of sight and deters a casual thief, but vinyl can be cut with a blade. Buy a hard type if you leave valuable tools or gear in the bed.
Do I need a locking tailgate for a tonneau cover?
Yes, for nearly every cover here. The UnderCover SE and, on most parts, the Roll-N-Lock M-Series hold the tailgate shut while they are closed and locked, but check the install sheet and still lock the tailgate. Even keyed Retrax and Pace Edwards covers leave the tailgate to lock separately, so a factory tailgate lock or a tailgate lock kit matters.
