Real mechanical hinges are worth it. Too bad they dropped the Encore model. I would have liked another one.

Folds for 2/3 bed access
Features
- Opens With One Hand: Drop the tailgate, turn the rotary release knob and lift: Extang's Secure Rotary Release Latching System lets you open the rear panel one-handed, with nothing to unclamp at the tailgate.
- Tool-Free Jaw-Grip Clamps: Extang's Jaw-Grip clamps hold the cab end of the cover to the bed rails with hand-turned knobs. Back them off and the whole cover lifts away when a load needs every inch of the bed.
- Folds Back for Two-Thirds of the Bed: The panels fold toward the cab on dual-pivot hinges and open roughly two thirds of the bed. Fasten both buckle straps, with the tethers attached, before you drive with it folded.
- Twist-and-Lift Latch That Locks Itself: Fold the cover shut against the bed rails and the rotary latches catch their bolt-on strikers on their own. Extang describes this twist-and-lift latch as unique among tri-fold covers, which usually close with tailgate clamps.
- 1" EnduraShield Panels: Each panel is 1" of EnduraShield TPO on an aluminum frame with a textured black EnduraCoat finish, built to shrug off dents, scratches and sun fading. Extang rates the closed cover at 600 lb, spread evenly.
- Sealed Corners, Caps and Edges: Rubber corner blocks, caps over the hinges and triple-fin seals that snap on around the edge close the gaps where rain usually gets in. Like any folding cover it is weather-resistant, not watertight.
Description & Fitment
The Extang Solid Fold ALX is a hard tri-fold tonneau cover for the 5'1" bed on the 2016-2023 Toyota Tacoma without the Trail Edition package. It suits owners who want a sturdy hard cover that mounts with slide blocks in the factory cargo rails, with no drilling, and comes off without tools. Its 1" EnduraShield panels fold toward the cab for about two thirds of the bed, and the closed cover is rated for 600 lb spread evenly. What sets it apart is the twist-and-lift rotary latch, which opens with one hand and locks itself when the cover closes, backed by Extang's five-year limited warranty.
Fitment & Compatibility
| Years | Model | Bed | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2016-2023 | Tacoma | 5'1" | without Trail Edition Package |
Check your bed: measure inside the bed floor from the bulkhead to the inside of the closed tailgate. Extang lists this bed as 5'1". This version is for trucks without the Trail Edition package.
Not for: the 2016-2023 Toyota Tacoma 6'2" bed (88835). That is a separate Solid Fold ALX part.
About Extang
Extang is based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and the Solid Fold ALX is assembled in Michigan from global materials. Extang publishes a truck-specific install sheet for each version and backs the cover with a five-year limited warranty.
The ALX's rotary latch is shared with Extang's low-profile Endure ALX and the soft-folding Trifecta ALX. The Solid Fold ALX keeps the panels and frame of the Solid Fold 2.0 and adds that one-hand latch.
Warranty note. Extang's 5-year limited warranty applies to the original purchaser, with warranty registration on file or a detailed, dated receipt. Keep your order confirmation from us, and contact us for warranty claims and registration help.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will this fit my 2016-2023 Toyota Tacoma?
Yes, if it has the 5'1" bed, without the Trail Edition package. Measure inside the bed floor from the bulkhead to the inside of the closed tailgate and compare it with the 5'1" label. If yours is different, look at the 2016-2023 Toyota Tacoma 6'2" bed (88835). Not sure? Send us your VIN and we'll confirm.
Will it fit the Trail Edition?
No. Extang lists this version for trucks without the Trail Edition package. Ask us about a Trail Edition truck.
What is the difference between the Solid Fold ALX and the Solid Fold 2.0?
They share the 1" EnduraShield panels, the aluminum frame, the hinges and the 600 lb rating, so they look alike on the truck. The ALX adds Extang's Secure Rotary Release: you open it with one hand by turning a knob at the tailgate, and it latches itself when you fold it shut.
Will it keep rain and snow out of the bed?
It is built to. Snap-on triple-fin seals run around the edges, hinge caps cover the panel joints and rubber corners fill the gaps. Like every folding cover it is weather-resistant rather than watertight. Brush snow and ice off before you fold it open; Extang's warranty requires that.
How much weight can it hold?
600 lb, spread evenly across the closed cover. That is Extang's rating. Keep cargo inside the bed from pushing up against the panels.
Can I drive with it folded open, or take it off?
Yes to both. Fold it toward the cab and fasten both buckle straps with the tethers attached, and you can drive with about two thirds of the bed open. For the whole bed, loosen the Jaw-Grip clamps by hand and lift the cover off. Never drive with it partly open.
Installation
Install time
Under 1 hour
DifficultyLevel 1simple installation
What's involvedCargo rail end caps come off and the cover mounts on slide blocks in the factory cargo rails, no drilling
Tools
- T-20 and two T-27 Torx wrenches and a 2.5mm hex key (included)
- 13mm wrench or socket
Here's the short version. Follow Extang's install sheet (below) for your truck's exact hardware, clamp positions and torque settings.
- Prep the cargo rails and place the cover. Take the rear (tailgate) end caps off the cargo rails and remove any tie-downs, both sides. Set the folded cover at the cab end, square to the bed, with its bulkhead seal on the bulkhead; unfold it so the tailgate seal touches the tailgate with its first two fins, then refold it without moving it.
- Fit the cab clamp brackets. Slide a cab slide block into each cargo rail from the tailgate end and move it near the cab. Line the cab clamp bracket up with the cover's cab clamp and screw it to the slide block with the T-27 wrench. Hook the cab clamp under the bracket and turn the T-handle until it touches, then two more turns.
- Fit the tethers. Unscrew each tether knob from its slide block, slide the block into the back of the cargo rail and thread the knob back through the washer into it, both sides.
- Mount the striker brackets (Tacoma). Refit any tie-downs, slide the short Tacoma slide block into the end of each cargo rail and close the cover with the tailgate open. Remove the factory bolt (keep it), then fix the striker bracket with that bolt in its original hole and a Torx screw into the slide block, square to the cover latch. Push the cover down while you snug them; leave room for the final adjustment.
- Adjust the latches and rotary knob. Both latches and the knob leave the factory only partly tightened. Lower the rear of the cover, slide each latch until it catches its striker and lock it from underneath with the T-20 wrench. Leave 3/4"-1" of the driver-side cable through the barrel clamp, tighten the knob screws and the barrel-clamp set screws (2.5mm hex), then turn the knob to check both latches let go. Hand tools only, no power tools.
- Make the final adjustment. Back off the striker bracket screws, pull the cover firmly down to the rail and tailgate so the brackets move down, match both sides and retighten. Extang's sheet marks 3.5 ft-lb (4.7 Nm) and 8 ft-lb (10.8 Nm) for the Tacoma bracket. Refit the cargo-rail end caps if needed.

Does the job and super fast shipping
The cover arrived so quickly a day earlier than what was projected. We bought it for our cross country move. We left opening the box and installing it to the last minute. When we did we noticed that there was a small dent roughly the size of a ping pong ball, which was odd because the shipping box had zero sign of damage. Installation was okay. The QRL for the installation video was good quality but could be improved. Our truck has a spray in bed liner. It took us a while to figure out that plugs needed to be removed moved. I wish the video had mentioned that it would saved us a bit of a headache. Overall it a good quality product and I would purchase again. I’m

Almost Perfect
The latches going into the factory screws should have been 1/4"-1/2" longer. It barely reaches the tailgate for sealing. Not sure it will be watertight.

Extant solid fold ALX bed cover
I have had 2 different hard covers in the past 100 years. This is the best hard cover. Sits on top the bed so you do not loose any room or have rails running on the inside. Water tight and bed stays cool in the summer heat. Other covers allow the interior of bed to get very hot. I would like to see it an inch or so longer to cover more of the top of tail gate. I am going to fabricate raising the bed highth 2 to 3 inches to add more room in the bed. This cover will sit and fasten on top. It will attach to the bed the same way.

Not a bad cover, but...
Nice tri-fold cover that looks great, fits well and largely keeps water out of the bed. Easy to operate and locks into place allowing you to secure valuables in the truck bed. The only concern I have (why it's 4-star) is that folding the cover has created permanent dents in the top of the cover just behind the rear window where the locking hardware rests on it. For the price, a bit of a disappointment that wasn't expected. Not a huge deal, but those indentions catch the eye and over time, they may wear through the cover material if you fold your top up often. Takes about an hour to install and is much easier with two people.

Extang Solid Fold AXL Folding Tonneau Cover
The cover looks great. Installation took longer than advertised. Installation video is not up-to-date so pieces that were told to use were not included in shipping because we were to use other pieces in shipping that weren’t in the video. We had to figure that part out on our own. Originally ordered 5/4/26, given arrival date of 5/14/26. It was not even shipped by 5/14. Given new date of 5/19 but then shipping was lost. Finally arrived 5/22 and was wrong cover. Holiday weekend so had to wait til 5/26 and was given a new date of 6/4. Return was easy, personnel polite and helpful. Again not even shipped on 6/4 and given 6/9. Arrived 6/20. Product is great. I had to keep following up on it. Timeline with dates were unacceptable.

Great Cover
This is my third Extang Solid Fold Cover. Installation instructions and videos were for Tundra without Deck Rail System. I figured out how to do it. Also, cover was shipped in a box designed for a bigger cover. It arrived with the box all damaged with openings. Surprisingly, all the parts were still in the box and cover was not damaged which speaks for how durable the cover is built.

Solid Bedcover. Folding design is very versatile.
Good quality build. Easy to install with the PDF directions. I had an issue with the install (since I only skimmed over the directions) and customer support could quickly help. I've had a few truck bed covers and this 3 panel folding design is the best all around design. It's strong and secure yet quickly folds or even removes. I was able to remove the 56 lbs cover in 60 seconds by unscrewing the 4 fasteners by hand and picking it up.

Great Product - Damaged before Sshipping or in Transit
I ordered this cover as it is the 3rd Solid Fold cover I have owned. I love being able to remove these easily when needed. The problem with this purchase, was the box was almost destroyed when it was delivered and the cover is bent and scratched. I have not requested a new cover yet and I went ahead and installed it and will most likely just keep it since it is not really visible once installed, but it will always show the damage. I would recommend this product, they just need to package better to avoid this kind of damage in the future.

Extang Solid Fold Bed Cpover
I am very happy with my new Extang Solid Fold cover. I did have a concern when I first put it on that the cover did not cover enough of the tail gate on my new F150 pickup and with the new design latch for holding the back of the cover down. With in two days of putting the cover on I had to drive through a very bad rain storm for over 100 miles and it did not leak a drop. This is the same cover I had on my old F150 for 11 years and it performed well for its entire life

Great look, different material
The first ex Tang trifold cover I purchased was about 10 years ago and I was impressed with the look quality and durability of it. I purchased the new truck and again bought the exact same product for a smaller bed and while it has some incredible additional features like the change of the locks and clips, I was not as impressed With the quality as it is now made of a hard plastic versus aircraft aluminum. Still looks great and meets the purpose, but for the disappointing.

Horrible packing, needs quality control
I have received 3 of these covers and who ever packages them for shipping does a horrible job. They are loose inside the box so they come beat up and damaged. Wish they would package them correctly. I had one on my older truck and it was well made. The ones now need more quality control, the glue is coming out under the plastic, clearly visible. Not sure what’s going on in extang warehouse. Very pricey item to be shipped like this!

Extang Solid Fold ALX Hard Folding Tonneau Cover
Awesome truck bed cover, installation was very easy. Looks great on the truck. The locking mechanism is very secure. I have run my truck through a brush car wash, the cover keeps the truck bed 99% dry, I do get a very small amount of water in the corners closet to the cab, but for the most part the bed stays very dry. Overall very satisfied with this purchase.

A tonneau cover which meets all my needs.
I couldn't be happier with Extang Solid Fold ALX Tonneau cover. I mounted it on a new Nissan Frontier Pro 4X with Billie Bars to support my roof top tent. Finding a good tonneau cover that would work with Billie Bars was a challenge because many have side mount Bars which interfere with the Billie Bar brackets. The Estang ALX does not have that problem and allows me to mount my roof top tent and still have a secure storage area.

Tonneau Cover
A very good product. I preferred the older model drop handles for securing the top, rather than the rotating handle. The older model attached the third panel to a plate in the rail, rather than attaching to the tail light cover where damages might happen if the top piece was pried or pulled open to gain entrance. All of such pressure would be transferred to the light rather than the rail.

Item has Several Problems
Item came damaged with a punch through on the underside. I did not request a return because it would take time and extra labor. I was going to continue with the install until I got to attaching the metal cables to the release knob. I finger tightened the set screw that holds the cable and both ends broke. I was able to jerry-rig a fix with my own metal cable. It is still too much effort to return as the box is huge and the cables did not snap until almost the end of the installation process. For now I will keep it but I will not be buying any more from this company. Overall the product looks good on my truck and functions well with my repairs. The gouged out section is the middle section and on the inside so it does not affect the functionality.

Nice Cover
The cover fits my 2013 Tacoma like a glove and looks very nice. Everything I needed was in the box to install it except the installation instructions, but it was very easy to figure it out. A change to the rear flap would be great so it could be shut and locked after the tailgate is shut and locked, this would also make it seal better against the tailgate. As it is now the seal has to be adjusted by hand everytime the tailgate is shut. This is the only reason I didn't give it a five star rating.

First Impressions: Extang Solid Fold ALX Tonneau Cover
The tonneau cover came very well packaged. Installation was easy. The only issue was the forward cab seal. It was 3/4 detached from the cover. It is held on by a tacky glue like substance. It separated from the cover and I could see daylight from inside truck. We’ve had rain in Florida and water entered the bed. I tried reattaching the seal yesterday. Will see what happens. If it detaches I will be filing a warranty claim

Leaks.
This cover leaks when the truck is sitting stationary. Drove over 300 miles with this truck and hit rain while driving and had rain overnight while at a hotel. The inside of the bed was perfectly dry while driving, but overnight when it rained and the truck was parked water found it's way in at 2 different places. #1 No matter how much you tighten the clamps by the bulkhead you can see daylight where the plastic of the bedrail cover ends. (I had a 52lb weight at the corner like the install video suggested) The weather stripping is not tall enough for that transition. #2 Where the latches are at the tailgate, I have moved locking brackets down as far as I can but there is just too much wiggle in the lock to keep a tight seal. I recently switch from an F150 and the cover I had for that truck had 1 wide foam the ran the entire perimeter and that sealed just fine. The weather stripping on…

excellent selection
After on line searching and reading I chose the Ex-tang tri-fold tonneau cover, fast & simple instillation (8 minutes) nice looking unit, very simple to unlock at rear and fold to your desired bed opening, leaving in upstate New York and having heavy snow fall the cover holds more weight then the snow fall could produce there by keeping the snow out of my truck box, have shown and encouraged others at my who who have also purchased and love the cover.

Extang alx
You can install by yourself but is much easier with another set of hands. Instructions are clear easy to comprehend.

Nice cover
Nice hard cover. Easy to install. No holes to drill, just lay it out and clamp it. One plastic latch was broken when received, customer service sent me new latch very quickly.

Hard cover tonneau
A superior product made of quality materials. Fits with the overall appearence of my truck. Installation instructions a little vague but even a non- mechanical person can install under 45 minutes. Highly recomend the product and the price was fair.

Great cover
It’s a great cover but upon delivery it has an indent where the foam block lays down on 1 side. I’ve contacted support with pictures. I was hopeful that it will put up but hasn’t yet. Will be happy to give a 5 star review but waiting on support.

Miss the old 2. 0 solid fold
Don’t like the new Alex twist and lift function compared to the original 2. 0 solid fold which I find that one to be much better as in better quality . The new Alx seems cheaper and I see future problems in the cable breaking or the twist handle. I also found the instructions that you can get only online as lacking clarity and no video for the ranger pickup which is what I asked for. Also the foam rubber filler for the head of the truck will not stick if you have a spray in bed liner and there needs to be a better solution to fill in this header gap.

You can see where release handle has been cut out underneath from the top side
After receiving my bed cover and installing noticed several blemishes that have been touched up by someone before I had received the cover

Nice topper
Better instructions would be nice. Had to watch many videos to install. A couple improvements would be nice, like the front clips are difficult to screw on and set correctly. If not for that I'd give it 5 stars.

Cover Leaks
I love the look of the cover and the functionality, it stays put and keeps what is in my truck bed hidden. The only issue with our tonneau cover, is it allows water inside the bed. The cover we had previously did not allow water inside, or it allowed very minimal water inside. This one allows so much water inside! We had some fireworks in our truck bed for Fourth of July and there was an unexpected rain storm. When we opened the truck bed the boxes were soaked! Luckily the fireworks were wrapped in plastic so we’re still functional, but the packaging was ruined.

My second one. Simple install. I didn’t want to deal with drain hose. Does excellent in wet weather. Keeps cargo dry.

Pretty Good
Looks good and very easy to install and remove. Appears to be as secure as any other tonneau. I didn't expect it to be perfectly water tight, but after a hard rain there was a lot of water covering the contents my bed. It appears to leak at the folds. I'm more concerned with security and convenience than it being water tight. If keeping the contents of your bed dry is important, look elsewhere. Otherwise this is a pretty good cover.
