A UTV winch is sized the same way a truck winch is, but the margins are tighter. The mounting points are smaller, the battery has less to give, and the machine itself weighs little enough that a bad pull can move it sideways rather than forward.
What Size Winch Do You Need?
Take your machine's fully loaded weight and multiply by 1.5. That is the minimum rating. For most full-size UTVs that lands on 4,500 lb. Lighter ATVs work at 2,500 lb to 3,500 lb, and heavy UTVs doing frequent recovery want 5,500 lb or more.
- 2,500 lb: single-rider ATVs and light utility work.
- 3,500 lb: most full-size ATVs and lighter side by sides.
- 4,500 lb: loaded UTVs, plowing and machines carrying gear.
- 5,500 lb to 6,000 lb: heavy UTVs and regular recovery.
If you plow, size up. Pushing snow loads a winch differently from a straight pull, with far more short cycles and far less cooling time between them.
Rope and Fairlead Are One Decision
Synthetic rope needs a hawse fairlead, which is a smooth alloy plate. Steel rope needs a roller fairlead. They are not interchangeable. Running synthetic through a roller fairlead abrades it at every edge, and running steel through a hawse chews the hawse.
Synthetic is the usual choice on a machine where weight over the front axle changes how it handles. It is lighter, it stores far less energy if it parts, and you can handle it without gloves. Power Draw Is the Real Limit
A winch under load pulls serious current, and a powersports battery holds a fraction of what a truck battery does. Three habits keep you out of trouble: run the engine while winching, keep individual pulls short, and let the motor cool between them.

Spooling and Mounting
Most machines need a model-specific mount plate, because frame rails and bumper hoops differ between makes. Check the plate is rated for the winch rather than assuming it clears.
When you spool line back on, keep tension on it and lay the wraps tight against each other. Loose wraps bury themselves under load and jam the drum, which is the most common way a powersports winch fails on the trail. Stand to the side of the line, not in front of it.
