A low profile truck tool box sits at or below the top of the bed rail. That one dimension is the whole point of the style, because it is what lets a tonneau cover close over the box and what keeps the back window clear.
What Do You Give Up?
Roughly a third of the interior volume against a standard crossover of the same length. A low profile box is typically 3 to 5 inches shorter in body height, and that height is where the capacity lives. In exchange you get a cover that closes, a clear rear window and less wind noise at highway speed.
If you never run a cover and rear visibility is not a concern, a standard crossover gives more room for the same footprint and usually costs less per cubic foot.
Measure the Clearance Correctly
This is where most orders go wrong. The measurement that matters is from the bed floor to the underside of your closed cover, not from the bed floor to the top of the rail. Those are different numbers, and covers vary.
- Hard folding covers need more clearance at the hinge than roll-up covers do.
- Leave room for the box lid to open, which usually means clearing the cover's front panel.
- Check the box height at its tallest point, which is often the latch or the lid seam rather than the lid itself.

Material and Finish
Aluminum keeps weight off the rails and will not rust where the lid gasket traps water, which is the failure point on a box that sits outside. Steel takes a harder knock and resists prying better.
On Weather Guard boxes the finish is readable straight from the part number: 0 is bright aluminum, 3 is brite white, 5 is gloss black, 52 is textured matte black and 6 is gunmetal gray. Textured matte black hides scratches best on a box you reach over every day; bright aluminum shows them most.
Low Profile Is Not the Same as Lo-Side
These get confused constantly. A low profile box is a crossover: it spans both bed rails just behind the cab, built shorter than normal. A lo-side box runs along one rail down the length of the bed. They solve different problems, and a truck can carry both.
Compare low profile boxes against lo-side boxes before deciding, and check standard crossovers if the cover is not a constraint after all.
