FiberMax On A Toyota Tacoma

The BAKFlip FiberMax shown on a 2016 Toyota Tacoma, a good look at the cover on a mid-size bed and at how low the folded panel stack sits behind the cab. Helpful for seeing the textured gloss-black finish and the overall proportions on a smaller truck before you order.

Unboxing The BAKFlip FiberMax

RealTruck opening a BAKFlip FiberMax carton and going through what ships in the box: the pre-assembled FRP-topped folding panels, the mounting rails, the clamp set, and the hardware and instructions. Almost four minutes of unhurried unpacking, which makes it the easiest way to check your own delivery against the parts list and see how the panel surface looks out of the wrapper.

FiberMax Install On A Honda Ridgeline

RealTruck fitting the BAKFlip FiberMax to a 2017 Honda Ridgeline, filmed as a full eleven-minute walkthrough. The Ridgeline's bed is unusual among the trucks this cover fits, so this is the one to watch if you drive one, and it is still a clear second angle on the general clamp-and-seal sequence for everyone else.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers on specs, fit and support

Will it fit my 1996 C/K 1500 with the long-ish bed?

If that bed measures about 78" inside, yes. BAK lists this FiberMax across 1988-2014 Chevrolet and GMC full-size trucks with the 6'6" bed, and the C/K era is inside that span. Cab and bed combinations varied a lot on these trucks, so send us your year, cab, and a tape measurement and we will confirm before you order.

Why does the tailgate have to close before the cover?

Because the FiberMax uses a conventional tailgate seal rather than a dual-action one. Closing the tailgate first lets the rear seal land on it properly. Do it the other way round and you leave a gap at the back edge, which is where nearly every FiberMax leak complaint comes from.

How much can the closed cover hold?

300 lb evenly distributed. That is enough for boards, a sheet of plywood, or a flat load spread across the panels. It is lower than the aluminum-panel covers in BAK's range because the FiberMax is an FRP-panel design, so plan around 300 rather than 400.

Does it work with the factory bed rail track system?

Yes. On these GM trucks the cover's rails clamp to the bed rail whether or not the factory track and tie-down system is fitted, so you can leave the track in place.

Will the finish fade sitting outside?

That is the FiberMax's specific strength. The FRP outer panels are highly UV resistant, so the textured gloss-black stays black rather than going grey and chalky the way an untreated surface does on a truck that never sees a garage.

Is the FRP panel actually tougher than a vinyl cover?

For security, clearly. A soft cover can be cut open with a pocket knife; the FiberMax top panels are rigid fiberglass-reinforced polymer and resist cutting and puncturing. No tonneau is a safe, but it is a completely different proposition from vinyl on an unattended work truck.

The instructions were a little

The instructions were a little confusing at first, but once I figured it out, it only took about 30 minutes to install.

Easy to install and looks/performs great!

The product came in under a week. My 12 year old son and I installed it together and it took about an hour. We took our time and got everything aligned perfectly. If there could be one improvement to the design, it would be a quick release system so you wouldnt have to realign again if you remove it temporarily.

Good and easy

Cover looks good and is easy to put on. Only issue Ive had is the front corners closest to the cab do not seat properly and let water in on rainy days. Set should come with two angled foam seals for the front corners. Not a difficult fix just annoying to find after full install.

Does not keep water out

An amazing cover but allows too much water in.

Great cover

I chose this cover over a couple others after a few months of research. The fact that it has 4 sections makes it really easy to handle. The release on both sides makes it convenient from either side. It has been water tight so far. Install was fairly easy needing just a couple minor adjustments to make sure it sit well. The only issue, which is minor, is that the weather strip in the last panel next to tail gate tends to slide side to side from being opened and closed often. All in all a great purchase.

Great product!

We are so happy that we decided on the BAKFlip Fibermax. It works well and looks great. It was worth spending a little more because of the quality.

Great cover, one issue.

I love the cover, but when you drive with it partially open strapped in place there is a sharp edge that rubs on the outer weather stripping. I filed the sharp edge and added some additional weather stripping.

BakFlip F1

I will update this reciew after i receive my replacement cover. Many issue in receiving 1st, having to reorder.. received it and it does not fit properly. Spoke with CS Manager John and I am supposed to get a new unit. Still waiting, holiday shipping "may" have delayed the replacement. I must say customer service has been great, when you can get them on the phone. Very poor follow up though.
