Features

  • Height You Can Adjust: A threaded spring perch sets ride height within the range ICON lists for the vehicle, so you can level the stance or make room for bigger tires. ICON presets each coilover at its recommended height.
  • A Larger 2.5" Shock Body: The 2.5" body and its larger piston area than the stock parts improve damping and ride quality on pavement, washboard and rock alike.
  • Valved for the Vehicle: ICON sets the length and valving of each coilover for its application, giving a sporty feel on the road and the control to handle rough ground off it.
  • ICON Engineered Springs: Each assembly carries an ICON coil spring made for that vehicle, and many applications offer a firmer 700 lb/in or heavy-rate spring for fronts that carry extra weight.
  • Reservoirs and Adjusters: Remote reservoir versions keep the shock cooler on long off-road runs, and CDCV, CDXS or CDEV valves add compression adjustment where ICON offers them.
  • Built to Be Rebuilt: ICON coilovers are fully rebuildable and re-tunable, so the same assemblies can be serviced or revalved over a long working life.

Description & Fitment

This ICON front VS 2.5 Series coilover kit fits the 1996-2002 Toyota 4Runner with a 0-3" lift. It suits owners who want ride height set on a threaded perch and a larger 2.5" body with more oil capacity and piston area than stock. Options include standard and extended travel remote reservoir versions, one with 700 lb/in springs, and CDCV versions with 10 compression settings. The shocks are valved for this vehicle and built to be rebuilt.

About ICON Vehicle Dynamics

ICON.

ICON Vehicle Dynamics designs and builds performance suspension for trucks and SUVs at its shop in Riverside, California. Engineering is led by Dylan Evans, its head engineer and a SCORE champion driver, and ICON tests its parts on the street, on the trail and under race conditions.

ICON's engineers begin with the result they want from a vehicle, then study the forces acting on it in motion, which is where the name Vehicle Dynamics comes from. Fabrication stays in ICON's own shop, from laser cutting and metal forming to CNC machining, welding and final assembly. ICON calls its suspension systems and shock absorbers the top choice for popular trucks and SUVs.

Authorized ICON Vehicle Dynamics dealer. Prestige Truck is an authorized ICON Vehicle Dynamics dealer, so every ICON part we sell is new and genuine. ICON's warranty is for the original retail buyer, on the vehicle the part was first installed on. Keep your Prestige Truck order receipt: we use it when we take a claim to ICON for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this fit my 1996-2002 Toyota 4Runner?

It fits when your vehicle matches one of these rows: 1996-2002 Toyota 4Runner (0-3" lift). If you are unsure about your trim or drivetrain, send us your VIN and we will check it against ICON's application list before you order.

Does ICON publish install steps for it?

Yes. ICON's install sheet for 58712 is linked in the Installation section below, with its steps condensed on this page. Use the sheet for the torque values.

How much lift do these coilovers give?

It depends on the vehicle. Each part shows its adjustable range in the Lift option, and ICON rates those heights for a stock-equipped vehicle, so a heavy bumper or winch can lower where it settles.

Do I need an alignment afterward?

Yes, after front coilovers. A front ride height change moves the suspension geometry, and ICON calls for a professional alignment. Retorque all hardware after the first 100 miles as well.

Do I need new upper control arms?

On some vehicles, above a certain lift height or with extended-travel versions. ICON lists the requirement in the notes for each vehicle, so check them before you set the ride height near the top of the range.

How often do ICON shocks need service?

ICON's maintenance guide suggests a factory service about every 40,000 miles for street use, or about every 15,000 miles for a mix of street and dirt, and sooner if a shock leaks, rides worse or gets noisy. Wash off salt and mud, wax the bodies once a year and check the nitrogen charge yearly.

What's involvedThe factory front coilovers come out and ICON 2.5 remote-reservoir coilovers bolt to the coil bucket and lower control armthe reservoir bracket uses existing fender liner clip holes in the frame, and hardware is re-torqued after 100 miles.

Here's the short version. Follow ICON's install sheet (below) for your vehicle's exact steps and torque values. These steps are for part 58712; the other parts on this page install from their own ICON sheet below.

  1. Using a properly rated jack, raise the front of the vehicle and support the frame rails with jack stands. Ensure the jack stands are secure and set properly before lowering the jack. NEVER WORK UNDER AN UNSUPPORTED VEHICLE.
  2. Remove the (3) nuts securing the upper coil seat to the coil bucket. Do not loosen or remove the larger center nut securing the spring seat to the shock shaft.
  3. Remove the stock shock assembly. Due to rubber bushing stiffness you may need to pull down on the suspension.
  4. Install new coil assembly. Install upper mount with the hose pointing forward and outward using (605101) bolts and (605131) lock washers. [Torque to 35 ft-lbs]
  5. Install the reservoir mount. The mount is designed to use existing holes in the frame that currently have plastic clips in them for retaining the fender liners. With a flat head screw driver pop the clips from the holes.
  6. Install wheels and lower the vehicle back on the ground. [Torque to factory spec]

Warranty, shipping & returns

  • Warranty

ICON covers its shock absorbers, including the shock in every coilover, for 1 year against manufacturer's defects.
    • Coverage belongs to the original retail buyer who owns the vehicle the part was first installed on.
    • A shock that fails in its first year goes to ICON for inspection and service. If ICON finds the cause was neglect, poor installation or anything other than normal wear and tear, the owner pays for labor, parts and shipping.
    • ICON repairs or replaces a defective part, at its discretion. Removal, reinstallation, freight and incidental or consequential costs are not covered, and parts that wear in normal use are not treated as defective.
    • Not covered: finish (including finish marks from shipping), alterations or modifications, installation that departs from ICON's instructions, racing use, police, taxi, government or commercial vehicles, and sales outside the United States and Canada.
    • ICON shocks leave the factory charged with nitrogen. Letting that charge out can make a shock malfunction, and ICON does not cover a failure caused by low nitrogen pressure.
    • To claim, contact us first with your order number and a short description of the problem. We open the claim with ICON for you, and your Prestige Truck receipt is the proof of purchase ICON asks for.
  • Free shipping

Ships free to the lower 48 states, with no minimum order.

Coilovers ship assembled and charged with nitrogen: check the springs, shock bodies, reservoir hoses and hardware as soon as the carton arrives, photograph any damage right away, and never let the nitrogen out. Check it as soon as it arrives.
    • Look for crushed ends, punctures or tears in the carton.
    • If something looks wrong, take photos of the box and the parts (and if a driver asks you to sign, note the damage on the receipt).
    • Open the box and check the parts against the parts list before you install.
