Frequently Asked Questions

Will this fit my 2022-2027 Nissan Frontier?

Yes, if it has the 5' (about 59.5") bed, without factory sport bars. Measure along the bed rail from the bulkhead to the closed tailgate; this bed runs about 59.5". If you're unsure, send us your VIN and we'll check.

Does it fit a truck with factory sport bars?

No. This part is for beds without factory sport bars. We don't list a version of this cover for that setup.

Which remotes work with the EQ?

Your truck's original key fob (press lock three times to close, unlock three times to open), the Retrax EQ phone app on iOS or Android over Bluetooth, and an optional 5-button cab keypad sold separately. A cabin module installed under the dash links the cover to your truck.

What if the power is off or the cover won't move?

Turn the manual disconnect knob under the cover a quarter turn to free it from the drive, then push or pull it by hand. To re-engage, turn the knob back and push the cover into the drive, or run the cover from the fob, app or keypad until the carriages reach it and snap into engagement.

Is it hard to install?

Retrax gives no time or difficulty rating. Besides the rails and clamps, it involves routing a fused harness to the battery, installing a cabin module under the dash and setting it up in the RealTruck EQ Installer app, so set aside time for the wiring as well as the cover itself.

Will it keep rain out of the bed?

It seals at the rails and drain tubes carry water out of the bed, but Retrax's sheet says the cover is not airtight. Clear snow and ice off before you run it; that is a warranty condition.

Here's the short version. Follow Retrax's install sheet (below) for your truck's exact steps, part letters and torque settings.

  1. Assemble the cover. Remove the shipping screws and brackets from both sides and keep the brackets. Pull the tail panel 4-6" out of the canister and guide the drive carriage into each side rail's channel, making sure the seal at the front of each rail doesn't curl under. Fasten each rail to the cover with three canister bolts (T25 Torx bit), fitting the rearmost bolt first with its lock nut and canister water shield, to the torque the sheet shows. Route the driver-side LED harness behind the cover and plug it into the cover module.
  2. Run the power harness. Route the main harness on the same side as the battery: in through a bed hole, down between the bed and cab and along the frame rails, kept high and away from moving parts and the exhaust. At the battery, connect the harness negative to ground and the positive jumper to the positive terminal, and zip-tie the harness neatly. Then pull the 30A fuse and disconnect the negative battery cable until the cabin module is installed.
  3. Set it on the bed. Remove all the protective film. With two people, lift the cover onto the bed with the canister at the bulkhead and the front seal lying flat, trimmed so it doesn't pass the bed rail caps. Set both rails 1/8" (3.2mm) from the tailgate, using the shipping brackets as spacers.
  4. Clamp and square the rails. Fit the clamps between the adjustment screws with each top jaw tucked firmly into the top inside corner of the bed rail sheet metal. Tighten with a 9/16" wrench while pushing the rail down, but not so close to the tailgate that it stops the tailgate opening and closing. Measure across the rails near the cab and above each clamp; they must match within 1/16". To adjust, turn the white adjustment screws with the 6mm Allen wrench (one turn = 1/16"). Then set the stand-off bolts for about a 2-degree upward tilt on each rail. Tighten the clamp bolts to 6.7 ft-lb.
  5. Connect, drain and seal. Plug the main harness into the cover module, zip-tie it to the cover and take up the slack under the truck. Click a drain tube into each side (turn it clockwise until it clicks twice) and route the tubes out of the bed. They usually exit through a hole drilled in the factory bed plug or another suitable hole; check for lines before drilling. Cut the T-slot seal into two pieces to rail length and press one into the T-slot on each rail.
  6. Cabin module and app setup. Install the cabin module and T-harness under the dash using your truck's own wiring instructions. Reconnect the negative battery cable and the 30A fuse. In the RealTruck EQ Installer app, configure and flash the modules and pair the cabin module. Then calibrate: with the cover disconnected from the carriages, press lock 3 times on the OE key fob, wait for the carriages to stop at the tailgate end, then press unlock 3 times.

    Retrax backs the Retrax EQ with a limited warranty for five (5) years against defects in materials or workmanship, from the original date of purchase.
    • A defective cover or hardware component is repaired or replaced, at Retrax's option; Retrax may substitute a newer model with a similar form and function.
    • It covers the original purchaser only and is not transferable. Warranty registration must be on file and/or proof of original purchase (a detailed, dated receipt) for the warranty to be effective; contact us for claims and registration help.
    • To keep it valid: clean with mild automotive soap and water only, no strong chemicals; never lubricate the rails or sealed ball bearings; keep cargo secured at all points while driving; check every clamp and retention part for tightness after the first week of driving after installation (or reinstallation) and now and then after that; clear snow, ice and anything else off before opening; never tow the truck from the rear with the cover on (remove and store it first).

Fairly easy installation. Have someone assist

The cover is a great convenience and is really not complicated to install. You'll definitely want to have a second person assisting you, as it will have some weight to it and with both people working on it, you can get it installed much quicker. Electrical is easy to do. There's some extra work if you have a solid or spray-in bed cover, as you'll want to drill some holes to run the electrical and drain hoses. The Bluetooth setup was not too difficult. Highly recommend you watch the install video first before doing anything, so you have a good idea of what's involved.

Product fine, instructions and customer service terrible

The instructions not included cost me several hours in installation and truck out of use for 5 days. Customer support was terrible. Slow response and lack of useful information/snarky responses. Printed instructions included in the giant box would have saved hours. Not sure the reluctance to provide helpful information. I was working with another aftermarket at the same time and the instructions from them and customer support was an order of magnitude better. Additionally the bot used for customer support is worthless and keeps asking for information already provided. Having a real person would do wonders, wrong place to cut corners. I will not be back.

Excellent base for overland truck.

The Yakima OverHaul HD is, in my opinion, one of the best bed rack systems currently available for overland and expedition vehicles. It looks great, feels extremely solid, and offers a level of flexibility that is hard to find elsewhere. What I particularly like is the ability to adjust both the height and the spacing between the uprights, making it easy to adapt the setup for everything from a rooftop tent to carrying longer gear. Another nice touch is Yakima’s built-in bottle opener. It may seem like a small detail, but it’s one of those features that always gets a smile around camp. That said, the system is not without its drawbacks. My biggest complaint is the limited availability of accessories through Yakima’s official European distribution channels. Depending on where you live, finding certain parts can be surprisingly difficult. The other downside is the SideBar accessory…

Nice product

Retrax customer for life here. At first I was like this product is way over engineered. Once I got comfortable with removing pieces of my interior on a brand new truck everything went together smoothly. Two electrical connections required on to the odb2 and one to the body control module. This is where year models differ. Some are behind dash and some are behind kick panel on drivers side. Neat product that allows you blue tooth control and oem key fob control.

Frustrating

After the first order arrived it was damaged and missing parts. Had to send it back, Second one arrived damaged and missing the same parts, they sent me the missing parts. Now screws were missing on the wind up reel. Now the third one arrived missing the exact same part as the other two. Finally get it installed and now it won't pair and the instructions were not helpful. Checked on youtube and still not helpful. Call on Monday and got MADISON. All I can say is THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH YOU WERE AMAZING. Now it it all set up and ready to use.

Great product - some issues with how it integrates with GM

I have a 23 TrailBoss LT 6.2L. Overall I could not be happier. This was a relatively easy install definitely need two people to lift the system into the bed. Running the electrical is not difficult if you have enough clearance (TrailBoss does). The system integrates into the OEM fob but if you opt for the remote and expect that it will also work to lock/unlock doors or if you are hoping that the app will do the same don't bet on it if you have a 2023 or newer truck. RT is working with GM to obtain the proper interface to do this. But It would have been nice to know prior to install as I spent a lot of time resetting and starting over. This does not change my decision to purchase the product. The product looks and works great.

After so much research...

After researching so many products online, I finally decided to go with what I thought would work for my situation. And I am so glad I did. The Retrax EQ Tonneau cover is fantastic. Works just as expected and seems like a solid build. It does take a couple of hours to connect everything, to include linking up all the Bluetooth modules and running power. But that was expected. I am really happy with this product. I am currently running an ikamper 3.0 mini tent sitting on top of UpTop mid height Truss bed rack that sits in the rails of the Retrax cover. Everything works and fits nicely!

Great Cover, Great customer service

I sent in suggestions on how to improve the installation guide because without various youtube videos I would not have gotten the installation done. I ended up on the phone with customer support to walk me through the pairing section (the app got stuck trying to connect to the bed unit). Anyway great cover - as close as I'm going to get to my Avalanche cover.

Buggy

Too buggy. You need to be logged in on the app phone to use the factory keyfob. If the app goes idle after a few days, to open and close using the factory keyfob wont work. You need to open the app on the phone have it be connected then the keyfob works. I gave up and use it manually now. The user experiance wasnt thought through by someone that actually uses this product. They can fix it by offering an open close switch/remote. Only option is a keypad.

Excellent cover

I was really surprised of how small the canister really is. You loose almost no bed space in the truck. It is really silent as well. The only thing is that the Bluetooth connection is not that easy. Specially if you run CarPlay, you must disconnect the CarPlay from the phone attending the setup, otherwise it will always show an error.

2024 tundra trd pro

This cover fit my 2024 tundra TRD pro with minimal issues. Overall quality was excellent. Screw holes from manufacture were not perfect. Installation instructions were okay overall. Thankfully other YouTube videos to bridge the gap on how to disassemble the dash inside truck otherwise I would have been lost. Bed cover works as intended with my factory remote which I love. Very Nice- boyfriend approved!

Bought this for my boyfriend! He loves it! I will say- the install instructions are not super detailed- took us about 4.5 hours to install. But customer support was super helpful! Doesn't take up too much bed space either which is a huge plus! It is not super fast to retract- moves about the same pace as a garage door, however it does have a cable to pull to manually open which is helpful!

Great product, instructions need to be updated

Product works great once installed. Bought for 2025 XLT Maverick and received meaningless instructions on how to install. No directions on where to install internal module, or where to route cables to battery. For the record: To avoid drilling theough the unibody, you can route the canister wiring through the side of the truck bed and down the front side of the passenger rear wheel, and find rubber grommets for the battery under passenger seat. (After removing some undercarriage shielding). For 2025 Mavericks, the wiring is different than previous years, so the computer module can be plugged into a port located on the passenger side center console/footwell area. Its located behind a metal brace.

We've had a chance to evaluate the EQ in ways many reviewers don't. We started with the PowerTrax XR, discovered the limitations regarding OEM integration, then replaced it with the EQ specifically for that capability. That gives us a unique perspective. As far as a balanced review, I'm going to cover both what the product does well and what prospective buyers should know before they purchase it. For example: OEM integration is the standout feature. Being able to operate the cover from the factory Chevrolet key fob makes it feel like it was installed at the factory rather than added later. The installation is straightforward for someone comfortable with automotive accessories, although disconnecting the batteries and routing the wiring adds some complexity compared with a manual cover. Installation more involved than expected

Overall, the cover works as advertised. The only complaint is that it is a little clunky when it closes, see the video. There were a couple of issues with the installation that were unexpected and weren’t covered in the instructions. 1. The control modules were not straightforward and not exactly as described in the guide. We had to get on YouTube to find clearer guidance. 2. The instructions didn’t address, at least that I could find, what to do when the left and right motors were not synchronized, which occurred initially and has also occurred once since the installation. YouTube had the answer, which was to open and close to cover repeatedly until they were in synch.

Almost perfect

Really like the Retrax EQ. Install is a bit of an effort, but straight forward for the most part… customer service has been great. My only complaint is it doesn’t work as smoothly as OEM as it should. Key fob works, most of the time, but not all. Should only require 3 button pushes, but mine for some reason only works with 4. And the annoying thing is speed of those button pushes have to be too precisely timed. Can’t fast push, won’t take. Can’t take too long, won’t work. 4 pushes is too many. And then you have the app… the app never seems to work for me first try… I have to open the app, give it a few seconds, the. Push the control and it usually works. The app seems to operate the EQ more reliably than the key fob.

Having issues with pairing phone to module. Not sure if truck being a 2026 has anything to do with it or not. Would be nice if instructions for cab wiring mentioned to look for truck wiring plugs closest to kick panel as mine was different than all online videos. Again, this could be due to truck being a 2026. The factory bed rail cap on the passenger side causes front clamp that secures cover to truck bed to be difficult to secure, goes on crooked and hard to tighten correctly. Again, could be due to truck being 2026.

Retrax EQ on a Tundra Platinum

Not suitably impressed... Here's why: Leaks much more than I anticipated. I've had retracables in the past, and even on a 8' long bed that didn't allow the amount of water intrusion this one does. It says its "works with the Toyota deck rail system". Not exactly...you have to remove the "front" rail for proper clearance/location of the trax. So its useless. Also, you cannot use the Toyota adjustable tie-down slides, or other deck rail accessories once the tonneau is installed. So, all your able to use is the Toyota deck rail it self, to mount the tonneau cover... I specifically bought this model to utilize the original Toyota keyfob to manage the opening and closing of the cover. While that works, the app does not. If using the App to close and lock the vehicle it does not fold the mirrors. To get that to work you have to fish out and use the keyfob... Worth noting: I did modify and…

quality cover. easy to install. the motor is pretty slow opening and closing so most of the time i would just manually unlock and lock it. It's synced to the oem keyfob but most of the time it does not work how i would like it to work, Shouldve gotten the extra keyfob instead of using oem keyfob.

Buyer Beware, especially Android, Retrax EQ.

The unit is built well, but instructions are lacking and you need TWO apps to install, not one. One app to install, one app to operate. I purchased it over a month ago and the app to install for Android is still not available. The app to operate is available. Retrax was absolutely zero help. Finally, I found someone willing with an iphone to download the app and install on their iPhone. The cover now works, the app to operate the cover does work on Android. You just can't install it - absolutely patethetic.
