Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers on specs, fit and support
Do I have to lower the tailgate to open the Retrax IX?
Yes. The quick-release handle is hidden on the driver side and you reach it with the tailgate down. Drop the tailgate, actuate the handle and slide the cover forward into the canister. Retrax states that a closed cover with the tailgate locked leaves cargo in the bed more secure than cargo in the cab.
How much of the bed do I get back when the cover is open?
Nearly all of it. The slats coil into a spiral canister that sits against the bulkhead, so the only space you give up is the footprint of that canister at the front of the bed. There is nothing to fold up behind the cab and nothing to remove and store in the garage.
Can I drive with the cover partly open?
Yes. The rails have three preset locking positions, so you can lock the cover part way along the bed and carry cargo that stands taller than the rails. Retrax does require cargo to be secured at all points while the truck is moving, and an unsecured cover or load voids the warranty.
Will it keep rain out of the bed?
The Retrax IX is described as weather resistant rather than watertight. Retrax credits the elastomeric hinges for that weather resistance, and the flush no-profile canister cover is there to help eliminate water and debris. Like any rail-mounted hard cover, treat it as protection from rain, spray and dust rather than a sealed box.
How do I clean and look after it?
Warm water and a mild car wash soap is all it needs. Strong chemicals or cleaners void the warranty, and so does lubricating the rails or the sealed ball bearings. Clear snow and ice off the slats before opening the cover, then re-check the clamps after the first week of driving and periodically after that.
Can I mount a rack on the Retrax IX?
The IX ships with standard clamp-on rails, and no T-slot option is listed for it. Three related models do name T-slot rails: the RetraxONE XR, the RetraxPRO XR and the RetraxPRO FRC-4000 EZ-OFF. Look at one of those if carrying gear on the cover is part of the plan.
