Yes. The cover and the tailgate operate independently. Slide the cover back with the tailgate up and reach in over it, or drop the tailgate first and then open the cover. There is no required order and closing works the same way.
Retrax rates the RetraxPRO MX for up to 500 lb of evenly distributed weight on the closed slats. That covers a few bags of mulch or a folded ladder laid across the top. Concentrated point loads are a different matter, so spread anything heavy across several slats rather than resting it on one.
Yes. The TraxLatch handle is key-lockable, and the double-wall aluminum slats are what give the cover its theft resistance once it is locked. The cover secures the bed from above, so a locking tailgate on your truck completes the setup.
Retrax does not call it watertight. The claim is that it helps keep cargo dry: the seals shut water out and whatever gets past them exits through the integrated drain tubes instead of dripping into the bed. Cold is not a concern. Retrax tests it from -40°F to 180°F with humidity as high as 95 percent. Components are chosen to resist freezing and binding.
Yes. Retrax builds separate part numbers for Ram trucks with and without the RamBox, GM trucks with and without the CarbonPro bed and Tundras with and without the factory deck rail system, plus Dually and Wide Rails options where those apply. Pick the option that matches your truck in the fitment selector and the correct part number and install sheet follow.
Wash it with mild automotive soap and water, nothing stronger, since harsh chemicals void the warranty. Do not lubricate the rails or the sealed ball bearings, since that also voids coverage. After the first week of driving, re-check the clamps for tightness and repeat that check periodically. Keep the slats clear of snow and ice before you open the cover.

Took about an hour to install, definitely a two person job, but looks great in the end.
Install was a little more cumbersome due to Carbon Pro bed rails needing install, but overall was relatively straightforward once those were installed. A couple of the bolts had the threads round (or strip) off at the end of them due to low quality on the bolts so had to replace with better bolt.

It was easy to install and works very well. I have only had it on for about a month so no long term review yet. It operates smoothly, but the metal stop bracket could be a little stiffer, it is easy to bend if closed too strongly. My last cover needed to be pulled harder so I am getting used to easier closing.

I am thoroughly impressed withe quality of my RetraxPro MX cover. The fit was perfect. It looks great and keeps everything secure. The install works alot better if you have someone else helping you. Friends that see it are also impressed.

I’ve had many different tonneau covers before, they all leak water when going through a car wash. There are just a few drops with this retractable cover. Next to none. Also I thought the cover would rattle while driving, no it doesn’t. This is first class. Even if I open it and slide it a few inches or open it all the way I can lock in any position I want to. This is a great tonneau cover.

This is the best cover for my truck that I have ever purchased! At 66 years old and handicapped it is so easy to open and close! Really keeps 99% of the water out also. I have received many compliments on it! I only wish it would have been a little less expensive! But I understand that you get what you pay for! Keep up the great work
I bought it a solid month & a half ago already. It's honestly a really nice cover that's definitely built with quality. The cover rolls so smoothly after the initial break in period, looks sleek, & is both functional & practical. The price is my only complaint, it's spendy without a doubt, but you get what you pay for nowadays. Now we will just have to see how it holds up in the long run.
Customer Service assistances answered all my questions on the product prior to purchase, delivery of product was quick, quality of product was excellent, installation instructions clear and the form, fit and function is Perfect. Cover adds to the Raptor’s appeal. And when the cover went on sale within 2 weeks of purchase, customer service refunded the price difference to my credit card.
I purchased the Pro MX, part number 80485 for my new 2026 Silverado 3500 HD long bed. This is the fourth Retrax cover I have put on a new pick up. I like the updated design with sealed ball bearing rollers. It was very easy to install. Instruction YouTube video explains the process very well. If you adjust it properly, you can open it and close it with literally one finger it rolls that easy. It is well-made and it is made in North Dakota. I highly recommend the Retrax Pro MX you will be pleased
Took me a little longer the. It said it would take because I'm no expert and it was almost 100 degrees outside. Easy to assemble and you definitely need a hand putting the tonneau cover into the bed.

This is the best bed cover ever!
I installed this on a 2018 Ram 1500 Rebel! It was easy to install. I installed it in about 1 hour. I get lot's of complements on how it looks and the low profile. Also, everyone likes how it can be locked, makes the bed secure!
No cover is 100% unless you get a cap, but this cap is not only resistant to most all water, but it looks better than any other on the market. I couldn't be happier with the ability to stop the cover at any point on the track. The trickiest thing I had with the installation was that the pre-drilled holes in the bed of my GMC was not large enough for the drain tubes and aligning the sides. Pricy but in this case, you definitely get bang for your buck. Overall....Totally great!

Installation was a little more tedious that I originally thought. Took a little over 2 hrs. I would say the majority of that was doing the fine tuning to ensure the distance between the rails was uniform. It’s done with these plastic bolts that have a tendency to strip, but we got it done. Now that it’s on, I love it!! No water issues, everything stays dry. It looks amazing and sleek on the truck. Easy to slide, and locking mechanism is very secure. Pretty high price point, but it seems worth it so far.
Easy to install. Installed on 2018 Colorado in about 45 minutes. Looks great! Love the fact that I can open the cover and tailgate independently.
Purchased this for a new raptor. Wanted dry secure storage without looking overlandy. It delivers on what I wanted. Instructions were not great. They had a seal to install that after I contacted customer support they stated was simply not needed. I spent a few weeks fussing with it. The drain tubes for this unit will not stay in by themselves based on design. You will need to use rtv to glue them in or find another way to attach them. This does cleanup real nice after an off-road adventure and looks real sharp. It’s surprisingly quiet as well, even after repeated high speed offroad adventures and rock crawling. Would get 5 stars with better instructions and better drain tubes.
I love it was very easy to install but was not happy with the damage during transport i am okay with it still have a bent on it every time I open the gate thing happens overall great product

The cover was installed professionally. It looks great. My only dislike is that it doesn't glide smoothly like it should. If I open it and give a light push it doesn't retract more than a few inches. It takes near constant prodding to open all the way.
This tonneau cover was moderately easy to install, provided you have an extra person to help, fits perfectly and comes with easy to follow instructions. It's a locking cover and comes with two keys. The hardest part was getting it in the bed after putting the rails on the cylinder....the rest was cake. Would buy again.

Not easy to install. Doable for sure but not easy. I’m 62 and my wife is 51. We got’r did but some aspects of the install were challenging. If I was 20-30 years younger with a similar aged male buddy I’m sure it would have been easier. Happy with the product and overall install. If I ever buy another, I’ll pay for the installation.
Although extremely expensive, seems to be very well engineered and installation was straight forward. Basically no adjustment was needed for tailgate closure. Would reccommend.

I can't begin to tell you how pleased I am with my Retrax Pro MX cover. Easy Installation, very professionally built, easy to operate, and protects my stuff.
In general, I like the cover. It looks good and secures the tools I carry in my truck. However, it is definitely not weathertight. If it is raining and I open the tailgate to look inside, there is water dripping through between all the slats. I had some tools in an open tool bag and after a mild rain there was about 1/4" of water in the bottom of the bag. Also, the cover tends to slide open just a bit, maybe 1/2". I tried adjusting it repeatedly, but still tends to open a bit.
Take's up a lot of room in a short bed, clamps to connect side rails are poorly machined so screws are at an angle (causes rails not to tighten flush allowing water to seep in), and very pricey compared to some other options on market.
I adore my retrax pro on my 2019 Honda Ridgeline but the downside retrax does not bed rack rails for it like they do other models. They say it is because the Ridgeline bed tappers to the end. Van Tech makes bed rails for it though. I would like the retrax pro with bed rack rail system but am looking at other options currently.
I ordered the new and improved "Gen2" cover; I know because it had the newer 'oval' latch. After receiving it and getting it halfway assembled, I realized that I got the older model with the older 'flap' latch (the same as my previous 10-year-old cover). Of course, it was too late to take it apart and cram it back into the box (which is probably impossible) to return, so I just finished the install. Cover is nice, but it is just so frustrating when companies pull the old bait-and-switch with a "new and improved" product and then just ship you the older model.

This model does not function properly on a 26 Ford Ranger. The included brackets do not fit, the manufacturer says you don’t need them. The rubber sealant that is included is way too thick and doesn’t fit. The cover does not looks in place except fully closed and it leaks like crazy! I wish I could return it but I am a 5’1” tall 52 year old woman and I can’t take it off and repackage it by myself. I’m absolutely disgusted with this purchase.
It is a heavy duty cover looks great closed, easy to install. It does not operate as easy as depicted on video it takes a considerable amount of effort to close the cover.

The cover itself is great. Easy to install. Looks and performs exactly like its supposed to. However, when you spend this kind of money on a bed cover, you should expect all of it to be high craftsmanship. Two minor issues that could be easily upgraded which would finish it off. 1- The lock cover is flimsy and made of plastic. I can see this weathering and breaking off in a couple of years, which will expose the locking mechanism to rain and slow. 2- The drain plugs and hoses are worthless. They do stay plugged into the box and leak bad. Come on guys! Step your game up!
Cover came to me with shipping damage. Great customer service and got a new one shipped out while I got the damaged unit returned. New one arrived...and more damaged goods. I was able to hammer out the dents as they would not be seen when installed. The product is good but the packaging needs work. Be prepared to return the first one or two before you get lucky.

Pros: 1. Final product looks great & sturdy. Very smooth looking, has an almost manufacturer layout to it. 2. All parts arrived promptly & intact, although I would prefer at least some extras just in case. Imagine not being able to install something because a screw is missing. Cons: 1. Install instructions - at least for my truck, some of the steps and the instructions absolutely have to change. Believe it or not, they put drainage as one of the last steps, assuming that each truck is going to have a spot to fit through their tubes. And if it doesn’t (paraphrasing) “carefully drill through without damaging whatever might be beneath”. Mind you that’s with the tonneau fully installed and calibrated. For reference, for my truck, that would be a horrendous idea for multiple reasons, and I ended up making holes in the side panels, after carefully removing them from the body and verifying…
It does not roll up as easy as I'd hoped. It takes both hands and a lot of force to roll it out
Very nice cover but no install guide included. For the price of this cover you should get a paper copy of the install manual. The online install guide is hard to follow on your phone and easy to skip steps. The cover has one big issue, that is that the rails have a one inch gap to the bed rail. This makes it impossible to tighten the clamps fully without distorting the cover rail. Too make it work correctly spacer blokes are needed and not included. It is possible these are the wrong rails for this install on a 2025 Ford Ranger, possibly for the previous generation Ranger. I plan on making my own spacers so the top can be securely attached and the clamps stay in place.
I have.not gotten the cover to roll smoothly yet. It tends to bind at certain locations while closing. May need some technical advice to resolve the issue
There were a few hiccups but they stayed engage all the way through satisfaction. It would be nice if instructional videos were for the exact vehicle involved.
I am very satisfied with the RetraxPRO MX cover. It was easy to install no problems and instructions were plain and simple, However, I have a PRO Tailgate on my Denali and because of how it is made it leaks a little water not much, threw the groves in top of tailgate no fault of cover. Not a super big deal and like I said not much water but would like to fix then I would have a pretty much waterproof bed. But as far as the cover I would for sure buy again and recommend it to anyone.
The Cover operates awsome the installation instructions are a little vague in details ! Had to reuse shipping screws to install side nails The plastic adjustment screws for the side rails didn't hold up to well they strarted to stipout of the allen key tool The drains for the the cover tub wont stay attached they keep falling out and i gave to drill holes for them in my truck bed The cover was expensive and to have items that lacked quality is disappointing
The cover is very high quality and looks great. However the video and instructions for the 26 Ranger Lariat are very marginal do not line up with reality of the installation.
