Description & Fitment

The TeraFlex Rear Disc Brake Conversion Kit swaps the rear drum brakes of a 1987-1990 Jeep Wrangler YJ or a 1984-1990 Cherokee XJ (non-C-clip axles, or 1987-1989 XJ with a Dana 44 rear) for discs. An internal drum parking brake gives what TeraFlex calls outstanding holding power compared with other disc conversion kits. The TeraFlex parts list covers two rotors, two calipers, a pad kit, left and right mounting plates, preload spacers and a hardware pack with hoses. Emergency brake cables are not included.

About TeraFlex

TERAFLEX.

TeraFlex describes itself as a Jeep company at heart, started and staffed by people who drive them. It designs, engineers and builds suspension systems, shocks, axles and performance parts, with the Wrangler and Gladiator at the center of the range.

The company traces its roots to the 1950s and MEPCO (Military Equipment Parts Company), an early supplier of Jeep parts. TeraFlex Manufacturing followed in 1996 to build heavy-duty suspension for the TJ Wrangler, and today's catalog runs from full lift systems and the Falcon shock line to axles, steering and armor.

Authorized TeraFlex dealer. Prestige Truck is an authorized TeraFlex dealer, so what we sell is new and genuine TeraFlex. In TeraFlex's words, its limited warranty extends "only to the consumer who originally purchased the product," so keep your receipt with your build records.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it work with ABS?

No. TeraFlex says there is no way to fit ABS sensors to its disc brake mounting hardware.

What else might I need?

Emergency brake cables. Most aftermarket alloy wheels need longer rear wheel studs, the axle shafts must have a 2.5" bearing offset, and some factory 15" wheels may rub the caliper, so check clearance before driving.

Does it fit a CJ or Commando?

No. TeraFlex rules out the CJ, the Commando and any Jeep beyond the listed YJ and XJ.

How quickly does it ship?

Shipping is free to the lower 48 states, and most orders arrive within 1-5 business days. We email your tracking number as soon as it ships.

Can you confirm it's the right part before I order?

Yes. Send us your VIN or year, model and trim, plus your lift height, wheel size and axle, and we'll check it against TeraFlex's fitment information before it ships.

Should I install brake parts myself?

TeraFlex asks you to read its instructions fully before you start and recommends installation by a certified mechanic. Brakes are safety parts, so whoever does the work should test the pedal and the brakes at low speed before normal driving.

Installation

Install time 3 hours
TypeBolt-on
What's involvedRemove the brake drums, axle shafts and backing plates, bolt on the disc brake mounting plates and reinstall the axles. Weld the brake line tab to the axle tube, fit the rotors, pads, calipers and new hoses, then bleed the brakes.
Tools
  • Basic mechanics tool set
  • Mallet or dead blow hammer
  • Press (non-C-clip axles only)
  • RTV gasket maker

Here's the short version. Follow TeraFlex's install sheet (below) for your Jeep's exact steps and torque values.

  1. Remove the e-brake cable from its bracket under the tub, raise and support the vehicle, remove the brake drums and unhook the hard lines from the wheel cylinders (3/8" line wrench).
  2. Pull the axle shafts (on C-clip axles, remove the cross pin and C-clips first), remove the backing plates and clean the bearing pockets.
  3. Bolt the disc brake mounting plates (left and right) to the axle flange and adjust the internal drum brake so the rotor just slides over the shoes; this sets parking brake tension.
  4. Reinstall the axles: non-C-clip shafts get the retaining plate, preload spacer (orientation per axle), seal and pressed bearing and collar, retainer nuts 45 ft-lbs as printed; C-clip axles get the clips, cross shaft, sealed cover and fresh oil.
  5. Weld the brake line tab to the axle tube, fit the rotor, pads (inside pad first) and caliper with the bleeder up (11 ft-lbs as printed), and install the new hoses with new copper washers on the banjo bolts.
  6. Bleed the brakes as the sheet describes before driving.

Warranty, shipping & returns

  • Warranty

TeraFlex's warranty list names no term for rear disc brake conversion kits, so contact us before ordering and we will confirm the coverage. It lists brake rotors and brake pads as wear items with no warranty.
    • TeraFlex extends its limited warranty only to the consumer who first bought the product, and only on the vehicle the part was first installed on. It does not pass to a later owner.
    • Coverage starts on the purchase date and does not restart if a part is repaired or replaced.
    • For a covered defect, TeraFlex will either repair or replace the product (or the faulty part) free of charge or refund the purchase price, at its discretion, and it pays the freight to send a repaired or replacement part back to you.
    • Not covered: damage from transportation, storage, improper use, skipped instructions or preventive maintenance, modifications, unauthorized repair, normal wear and tear, product finish, improper installation or maintenance, racing or competition, or accidents, abuse and neglect. Improper installation, poor maintenance, racing or competition use, and neglect or abuse void the warranty.
    • Paint and powder coat finishes carry 90 days of defect coverage only, not wear from use.
    • Claims: contact us first. Keep your proof of purchase or original invoice; removing the part from the vehicle and the inbound shipping are the owner's responsibility.
