Is the M12 the right size for my truck?
If you run a three-quarter-ton truck, yes, that is exactly what it was built for. The sizing rule is a rated pull of at least 1.5 times gross vehicle weight, so 12,000 lb suits rigs up to roughly 8,000 lb. Below that, a 10,000 lb winch will do the same job for less money and less nose weight. Above that, or if you are regularly pulling a loaded one-ton out of soft ground, look at the M15 or 16.5ti.
Why is it so much slower than an M8274?
Deliberately. The M12 runs a 261:1 planetary reduction to make 12,000 lb from a 4.6 hp motor, and deep reduction means low line speed: 30 ft/min unloaded against the M8274's 76.15 ft/min. You are trading retrieval speed for capacity and for a gearbox that is comfortable holding a heavy load. If speed matters more to you than the extra 2,000 lb, the M8274 is the other side of that trade.
Does it come with a mount or bumper?
No. The M12 bolts to the standard 10" x 4.5" pattern but you supply the winch plate, winch-ready bumper or carrier. Make sure whatever you choose is rated for a large-frame Heavyweight winch, because this is a 24.08" long, roughly 136 lb unit, not a compact trail winch.
What does it draw, and what battery do I need?
Warn calls for a 650 CCA battery as a minimum for winching. Current runs from 67 amps at no load to 440 amps at the full 12,000 lb rating. Keep the engine running while you winch, use the supplied 2 gauge leads without extending them unnecessarily, and keep the terminals clean, because voltage drop at a dirty lug is the most common reason a healthy winch feels weak.
Can I add wireless control?
Yes. The Warn HUB wireless receiver for truck and SUV winches, part 103945, plugs into contactor-controlled Warn truck winches including the Heavyweight and Classic series, and lets you run the winch from a phone at up to 100' away. It is a separate purchase.
What is the difference between the M12 and the M12-S?
The line, and only the line. The M12-S, part 97720, carries 100' of 3/8" Spydura Pro synthetic rope with a heat-resistant sleeve instead of the 125' of 3/8" wire rope on this build. Same 12,000 lb rating, same 261:1 gearbox, same frame. Synthetic is lighter and safer if it parts; steel is cheaper and handles abrasion better.
