Description & Fitment

Part 17801 is the steel-rope M12, rated at 12,000 lb, with a 3.5" x 8.2" drum holding 125' of 3/8" wire rope, a roller fairlead and a remote switch on a 12' lead. Its 261:1 geartrain gives 30 ft/min with no load and 3.9 ft/min at full rating on Warn's chart, and it weighs about 134 lb.

Choose the right version: this is the M12 with steel wire rope. Synthetic rope and a hawse fairlead: M12-S (97720). More pull on the same frame: M15 (47801, steel) or M15-S (97730, synthetic). Warn's 24V M12 is a different part (265072).

Not included: the winch mount or mounting plate (with the bracket Warn uses for a remote-mounted control pack) and the vehicle battery, both sold separately.

How much pull is left on upper layers?

Warn's chart rates layer 1 at 12,000 lb and layer 2 at 10,054 lb, dropping to 6,764 lb by layer 5 (8,651 lb and 7,592 lb on layers 3 and 4). With 125' of rope the drum fills deep, so spool more line out before a heavy pull.

How much current does it draw?

Warn charts 67 amps with no load, climbing to 440 amps at 12,000 lb on a 12V system.

What do I mount it to?

Warn's Heavyweight guide shows the winch on a smooth, flat plate drilled to the standard 10" x 4.5" four-bolt pattern. The plate or bumper is not part of this listing, so plan on a Warn mounting kit or a compatible mount with that pattern.

What bolts and torque are specified?

Use 7/16-14 class 8.8 metric (grade 5) or better bolts tightened to 50-55 ft. lbs. (68-75 Nm). Warn's bolt-length table calls for 1.5" bolts on a 5/16" or 3/8" plate and 1.75" bolts on a 1/2" plate. Never weld the bolts.

When does the wiring go on?

Last. Warn says to finish bolting down the winch and attach the hook first. Keep the red power and black ground cables clear of sharp edges, hot parts and moving parts, and put the supplied boots on every terminal.

How do the M12 and M15 differ?

They share the frame, motor, drum and 10" x 4.5" pattern. The M15 adds 3,000 lb of rated pull through its 315:1 gearing, so it is slower: Warn charts 22.2 ft/min with no load against 30 ft/min for the M12.

Holds Up Great After Abuse

I have had the M12000 for over 5 years now and it has been bulletproof. It sits on the front of a Front End Bumper Replacement out in the weather and has never failed me. I have stalled this winch trying to pull loaded trucks out with my pickup anchored and didn't have to worry about burning it up. It would be nice to have a rope instead of cable, but the 125' of cable comes in handy. I use it for work, not play, and it has never let me down. The only maintenance I do is keep the battery cables clean where they attach to the battery posts.
