Made for the 2007-2018 Jeep Wrangler JK (2-Door only), part 78121-01A is a vehicle-specific PowerStep Xtreme kit. Hard-Wire wiring: the trigger wires join the door-signal circuits with the supplied connectors rather than an OBD-II module. It is the dual-motor PowerStep, which AMP Research built for a Wrangler JK that sees snow, ice, mud and debris. By AMP Research's guide the install takes 3-5 hours (level 4 of 4, professional installation recommended).

Is this the Plug-N-Play or the Hard-Wire kit?

Hard-Wire. The harness connects to the truck's door-signal wires with the supplied connectors, as AMP Research's guide shows for your truck.

How is the Xtreme different from the standard PowerStep?

The Xtreme has two motors per side instead of one. AMP Research says the extra torque keeps it working reliably through snow, ice, mud and debris. Otherwise it shares the PowerStep features: a 6"-wide step, LED lighting, a 300 lb per door rating and automatic deploy and stow.

Can I install it myself?

AMP Research recommends professional installation for every PowerStep, though it says experienced DIYers can do it at home with the included vehicle-specific kit and instructions. AMP's guides rate the job level 4 of 4 (experienced) and list 2-3 hours or 3-5 hours depending on the truck; some trucks need drilling and some cabs need the boards cut to length.

What happens if something is in the way?

AMP's guide says a moving board stops on its own if it meets an obstruction. Clear it, then open and close the door to resume normal operation. Keep hands away while the boards are moving.

How do I keep it working in mud, salt and snow?

AMP's guide says mud, dirt and salt can get trapped in the mechanism and cause noise, and its maintenance section covers cleaning it out. When you wash the truck, avoid spraying the motors directly; afterwards, apply a silicone spray lubricant to the hinge pivot pins. Don't put silicone, wax or protectants such as Armor All on the step surface.

Here's the short version. Follow AMP Research's install guide (below) for your truck's exact mounting points, wiring and torque settings.

  1. Mount the controller. With the harness fuse removed, mount the controller where the guide shows, plug in the harness and connect its power and ground leads as the guide shows.
  2. Route the harness. Run the harness legs down to each side of the truck, securing it with the supplied cable ties.
  3. Attach the boards. Slide each board's T-nuts into the lower linkage mounts and set the board position the guide gives for your truck, then tighten to the listed torque.
  4. Connect the door signal. Tap the harness trigger wires into the door-signal wires the guide identifies for your truck, using the Posi-Tap connectors.
  5. Fit the LED lamps. Mark the lamp positions the guide gives, fix the lamps in place and connect their wires.
  6. Test every door. Check that each door deploys the boards and turns on the LED lights, and that the boards stow again when the doors close.

AMP Xtreme Running Boards

After much research, I elected to go with the AMP Xtreme Running Boards. Awesome Choice! It was spot on with installation, 3-4 hours. It was a relatively painless process that even I could do. The 2 motors on each side is the way to go! Tucks under the body perfectly. I haven't put the lights on yet, as the weather is still a little to cold. I would recommend a better lighting option. The wires are all set up, maybe some low light strip lights like on the new Suburban running boards. Other than that one suggestion, My family and I love the running boards, (Look, convenience and functionality) Now I got lucky with a rebate, but a little costly. Maybe include some other perk for top of the line AMP Running Boards (smart app, extra y cable for inside connection or optional in cab switch)

Love my running boards

Amazing is the perfect word to describe these running boards. The install was a bit confusing as there was no instructions except scan a QR code that showed you how to ON A DODGE TRUCK, while I have a gmc. Wish is had come with paper instructions and not me researching on YouTube for info. Over all I am pleased with the product. I also painted the underneath of my truck black to disguise the running boards. Can’t go wrong with these steps.

Roughly a month after install, the stp system is awesome! 5 star so far. Install was a bit more time than estimated, I doubled the time. Still the install was not that difficult. On the extreme, the one observation, the linkage and motors are designed in pairs, the instructions did not say that, had to disassemble motor linkage configuration and reassemble.

Faulty motor

Seeing as though I received my steps with a faulty motor, and after 3 to 4 weeks and still haven't received the replacement motor. Kinda makes me question the customer service. You would think after dropping that kind of money you would expect a speedier turn around. Overall the steps are great quality and work as they should. seeing as I bought the extreme steps they have 2 motors on each side so the step with the faulty motor can still work with only one motor.

Incorrect Parts Delivered

Purchased AMP Power Step Extreme (not cheap). Unboxed and found out that driver's side linkages and motors were incorrect. Contacted customer support and was told to submit issue online. No response for 3 days so contacted customer support again, processed warranty replacement but said they can't get parts for 6 weeks!!!! Automatic running boards

I purchase these and didn't have time to install them myself so I had a local mechanic shop do it. I really like how they are truly plug and play and don't need to have the door sensors. All controls are taken care of through the port under the dash. It look the shop about 3 hours to install and they look great. The lighted boards are another plus. They are however a bit more noisy than the OEM Ford boards I had on my previous truck. The Ford model also has a protective shield over the motors where these do not.

They work fine but not plug and play as advertised.

They work well and function as they should, however I was told they were plug and play with no modifications to truck wiring. They are not. Had to tap into wires behind the OBD2 port. Also had to drill a hole in the floorboard of my truck, and when you order the Powersteps for a Supercab, they send you steps for a crew cab and you have to cut 13" off the steps. Perhaps I should request a percentage refund for the 13" of the steps I had to throw away? For the cost of these steps, I expected better.

Easy Install

Works fast and looks great, took only 3 hours to install and the longest part was routing the wiring harness through the truck. But the boards itself was an easy bolt on install. I ended up not installing the included LED lights since they were a blue hue tint, but if your truck already comes with zone lighting, you won’t need them since the truck itself already provides a courtesy light.

Extreme steps on GM 3500 Hd Leveled

The steps were very easy to install. It took about 4 to 5 hours to do relatively with no hiccups. The only issue was the LED lights will not stick to the rough texture on the rockers. I ended up putting them on the backside of the rocker, I don’t get as much light from them, but they still function. The steps are so much easier to get in and out of the truck. I don’t know why I didn’t do this four years ago. The cost would also been significantly less considering

Bad info

I bought these to replace my ORM power steps on my GMC. I called and asked the person on the phone whether these would work with my existing wiring and plug to avoid having to run new wiring up through the engine box. I was told my existing wiring would work fine and essentially just needed to bolt the power steps on and plug them into the OEM plug. That is not the case and I was told the second time I called that I needed to run all the new wiring. Would have just bought OEM if the original rap had been truthful.

Auto deploy running boards

I like the fact they don't hang down and take away my clearance between the ground and truck. They deploy a nice wide step (running board)when the door is opened and draw up to the bottom of the rocker panel when the door is shut. The night lights are a nice touch also . How did I live w/out them!!!

These are the #1 mod you can do to improve your truck (after tires, wheels, & Bilstein shocks) :-) One small problem: the instructions are out of date, I'm assuming. I have a 2025 & in the video, the guy says the module you have to tap into is hidden under the dash. In 2025, it's under the dash, but it's mounted on the left wall in clear sight. I was blindly reaching under the dashboard near the steering column, as it shows in the video, & while your head is near the brake pedal, it's 10" from your face on the left wall...lol That was the only issue. Besides that, everything was perfect.

Working great

I got these to help my wife get in my Ram 3500 after she became ill and couldn’t climb in as easy. We were not lovers of the running board hanging down and the looks of them. So that is why I bought the retractable boards for looks tucked up and keep from catching brush and debris when we are off road or in our fields. They installed good I had a little issue and a call to tech get me back on track, they were great to work with. These are very well made and engineered with lots of though put into them. I like them so well I’m thinkin about putting a set on my TRX.

The Only Way to Mount

My last truck was a 2008 Chevy Duramax with a 6' lift. I used tubular nerf bars to get in and out of that truck for 12 years. This year I decided on AMP power steps on my new truck which has a 6" lift as well. What a difference getting in and out of this truck is it really makes life easy. Solid Rigid Sturdy Running Boards

Excellent quality and finish. Second pair that I've owned. The lights are generic. They do not apply to my 2023 Ford F-150. The rocker panel area is curved while the LED lights are flat. Does not work at all. This definitely was not a deal breaker. The first pair of Amp Research boards came with lights that did not work and zero response from customer service. So, I'm used to Amp Research boards with no lights. The interior truck lighting is adequate when the door is opened at night. Overall, I highly recommend. I will buy a spare set of motors in the near future. I have a sneaky feeling that spare motors will be hard to get in the future due to supply chain issues.

These are excellent but if you own a Jeep and will be removing your doors do not forget to install the override switch - should be included for the price for Jeep owners.

Amp research JL xtreme power steps

Let me just start by saying this is my second review on anything in the last 10 years. I bought these for my brand new jeep about two years ago and I could not be more disappointed and frankly pissed off. They are supposed to be the Xtreme steps, more expensive than the regular ones. They only worked properly for less than a year. Sometimes the fail to deploy, sometimes they go up only half way but what it is worse is when they take forever to go down you beginning to step down off of the jeep with one leg on the ground and they happened to come down on the back of your calf scraping it so bad specially if you are wearing shorts. It’s so infuriating. Also the the finish coating only lasted about eight months on the driver side. Save yourself from all the frustration these will bring you and don’t spend your money on these specially for as much as they are being considered a premium item

Almost Perfect

These are my first ever power steps and I really enjoy them. I have a 2023 Ram Cummins with factory air in the rear. The only thing keeping me from giving these 5 stars is that there was no warning or anything about needing the air tank brackets sold separately. Instead, I learned the hard way, and now I have slight damage to my passenger step from it hitting the air tank. The correct bracket was purchased and I’m excited to get it on the truck.

Amp Research Power Boards

Great product - install is reasonable, quality is great, all very well done. The one thing they missed on is storage location. These boards should store like the OEM Power boards and protect the pinch weld and bottom of the rocker panels.

Amp PowerStep XTreme review

Very nice looking product with high quality. Installation did take me three hours which included taking off my old running boards. The wiring harness is very easy to install with only a couple areas that needed hard wiring. All other wires plugged directly into the motors and the control box. They fit up under my vehicle better than I expected. I installed them on a 2018 F350 crew cab. When ordering I was told the kit came with the Power Override Switch, but my kit did not have it. I tried to order it but it's unavailable.

Everything is good but the wires were crossed on the passenger side when you open the door on the passenger side, the step close and when you close the door the step open so I had to rewired the passenger side but everything else was good

Exactly what we wanted!

I bought these for my husband for Christmas. I'll admit, they were more a gift for myself so I don't have to hoist myself up into his truck. He installed them in just a couple hours by himself. They are damn near invisible when they're closed. They feel sturdy, and I really like that only the side of the truck door that is open, actually triggers it to open. Absolutely worth it. I originally ordered the wrong steps for his truck, and the customer service was AMAZING at helping me get the correct ones ordered for replacement, as well as not charging me to ship back the incorrect steps. Within 3 days, I had the new steps delivered.

Quality Control Is Lacking

I’ve been using these steps for years on multiple trucks. I’ve noticed a steady decline in the quality control. Typos throughout the installation manual, which is overly difficult to find to begin with. In this order the ring connectors for the ground wire and battery connect were crimped to the wrong wires. I had to cut off the ring connectors, pick up new ones, and crimp them on the correct wires. For the price of this product; mistakes like that are unacceptable. Amp Research, or whatever company they fall under now, need to tighten things up. This may very well be the last time I buy these steps.

AMP retractable running boards.

I'm very happy with purchase. Easy to install and work perfectly! The only thing I would change would be to offer the lights in white color as opposed to the purplish color that comes with the kit.

Just had them installed a week ago but so far they are great. Step Is wider than other and grip is great. Come down quickly smoothly everytime.

Be aware

I chose these steps over other manufactures steps because of the ability to turn off the running board operation in the cab through a switch so they won't extend. I'm 6' 6" so I don't need the running boards to get in and out of the truck but my wife does, so I figured I'll just turn the running boards off for a majority of the time. After installing everything and reading through the instructions for the switch, I noticed that they tell you "Running boards will return to the Auto Operation in the next door cycle after 30 minutes". So I have to cycle the switch from "Off" to "Auto" back to "Off" and then wait for the running boards to retract to get in or out of the truck. Instructions are good with the exception of the picture of the installed passenger front linkage, the motor will actually be pointed outward and not inward towards the frame. So this can be confusing. On my truck…

Excellent steps. Heavy duty made. I really like em. They deploy instantly when door is open, and retract in 3 seconds when door is closed. There is no better ones. So if you want the best, then Buy!! Only reason I gave four stars instead of 5, the packing inside of box could be better! These are on a 2022 Jeep Gladiator Mojave

Great steps but did not fit without grinder

Love the steps so far, unfortunately my install required a grinder. Worked with manufacturer for hours and they had no solution so I ground to make it fit.
