Description & Fitment

The Blue Ox SwayPro is a weight distributing hitch with sway prevention designed into its head, sold here in 34 versions. Spring bar ratings run 350, 550, 750, 1,000, 1,500 and 2,000 lb of tongue weight, and each rating comes with a standard or underslung coupler head, a 7-, 9- or 11-hole shank, and clamp-on or bolt-on brackets; the BXW1508 and the 2,000 lb models use a 2-1/2" receiver. Tensioned spring bars push load forward onto the front tires so the truck sits level, and when a gust pushes the trailer sideways both bars pivot on the head against each other to pull it back in line. Because that action comes from the shape of the head rather than a friction setting, there is no knob to tighten before trips and wet or icy roads do not change how it works.

Fitment & Compatibility

Choose the right version: start with your loaded tongue weight and pick the bar rating that covers it (Blue Ox minimum 200 lb). For a coupler on top of the trailer frame, take the standard head: part numbers ending in 0 have the 7-hole shank, -S the 9-hole, 6 the 11-hole, and 1 bolt-on brackets. For a coupler under the frame, take the underslung head: ending in 3 for clamp-on, 4 for bolt-on brackets. For a 2-1/2" receiver, choose BXW1508 (1,500 lb) or BXW2000/BXW2003 (2,000 lb, both on a 9-hole shank).

Not included: the receiver hitch on the truck. The 2-5/16" ball comes installed on the head.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which head fits my trailer coupler?

Blue Ox matches the head to where the coupler is welded: on top of the frame takes the standard head, under the frame takes the underslung head.

Which receiver size do I need?

Most versions use a 2" receiver. The BXW1508 and the BXW2000 and BXW2003 are 2-1/2" models.

How do I pick the right rating?

Weigh the tongue with the trailer fully loaded and level, at towing height, and choose the spring bar rating at or just above that number. Blue Ox also needs at least 200 lb on the ball for any SwayPro.

What counts toward gross trailer weight?

Blue Ox counts the dry trailer plus water, propane, waste and cargo. Weigh it fully loaded on a level scale, such as a public truck scale.

Does the sway prevention need setting?

No. It is part of the head design, so there is nothing to dial in between trips.

Should a pro install it?

Blue Ox recommends an authorized Blue Ox professional installer and warns that wrong installation voids the warranty. The manual walks through each step if you do it yourself.

Here's the short version. Follow Blue Ox's install sheet (below) for the exact positions and hardware.

  1. Park the truck and trailer in a straight line on firm, level ground, deflate or switch off any air ride or self-leveling system to its minimum, and remove the existing receiver hitch.
  2. Slide the shank into the receiver and secure it with the 5/8" x 3" pin and clip.
  3. Level the trailer, measure its coupler height, then bolt the head to the shank so the ball sits level with the coupler or up to 1" higher; torque the 3/4"-10 bolts to 250 ft-lb.
  4. Couple the trailer, mark both sides of the tongue 29" behind the ball center, and center the rotating latches on those marks, bolts finger tight for now.
  5. Fit the spring bars into the bar pivots and lock them with the pin and snap clip, then torque the latch set screws to 25 ft-lb against the frame and tighten the jam nuts.
  6. Check that truck and trailer sit level: adjust the chains one link at a time for the truck, and move the head on the shank for the trailer (each hole is 1-1/2").

    Blue Ox covers the SwayPro with its Original Purchasers Limited Lifetime Warranty, which runs for as long as the first retail buyer owns the hitch.
    • If a part fails from a flaw in material or workmanship in normal use, Blue Ox will repair or replace it once it is returned to the factory, freight prepaid.
    • Send Blue Ox the warranty card in the first 30 days after you buy, and keep the original invoice, because a copy of it must go with any claim; a later owner is not covered.
    • Not covered: wrong installation, misuse, changes to the hitch, poor maintenance, accidents, normal wear, paint or rust, and costs such as towing, travel or lost time.
