Features

  • Gas Struts Do the Lifting: Unlock the lid and two gas-charged struts raise the rear for you, then hold it open while you load. There is nothing to prop and no panels to fold, so the whole bed opens in one move.
  • One Twist Lock, Two Latches: A single low-profile twist lock sits in the middle of the lid and works the latches on both sides of the bed at once. Two keys come in the box.
  • Sealed All the Way Around: An EPDM rubber double-bulb seal runs around the whole edge of the lid to keep rain, sleet and snow off your gear. UnderCover calls it weather-proof; like any tonneau cover it is weather-resistant rather than airtight, so keep anything that must stay bone dry in a sealed box.
  • Wraps the Bed Caps and Tailgate: The lid's wrap-around lip closes over the bed rail caps and laps over the tailgate instead of sitting down inside the rails. Locked, it keeps the tailgate shut too, so one key secures the whole bed.
  • Clamps On, No Drilling: The brackets clamp to the bed rails with the supplied hardware, so nothing gets drilled. A spray-in liner is fine; a plastic drop-in liner may need minor trimming where the brackets sit. Plan on a helper to set the lid on the truck.
  • LED Light Under the Lid: A built-in LED light under the lid lights the bed after dark. UnderCover says it is fully removable and has a hook, so you can hang it where you need it.

The UnderCover SE is a one-piece tonneau cover for the 2016-2023 Toyota Tacoma with the 5'1" bed and the factory deck rail system. It suits owners who want a lockable hard lid with a durable textured black finish. X-Effect bracing stiffens the ABS composite lid, gas struts lift it, and a double-bulb EPDM seal keeps most weather out. It mounts to the Multi-Track deck rail with the included bracket kit, and the tailgate can't be dropped until the SE is unlocked.

Check your bed: measure inside the bed from the bulkhead to the inside of the closed tailgate. UnderCover lists this bed as 5'1"; it measures about 60.5" long, and Toyota sells it as the 5-foot bed. This part is for trucks with the factory deck rail system.

Not for: the 2016-2023 Tacoma 6'2" bed with the factory deck rail system (UC4146); the 2005-2015 Tacoma 5'1" bed with the factory deck rail system (UC4056). Those are separate UnderCover SE parts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this fit my 2016-2023 Tacoma?

Yes, if it has the 5'1" bed and is built with the factory deck rail system. Measure inside the bed from the bulkhead to the closed tailgate: this box is about 60.5". If yours is different, look at the 2016-2023 Tacoma 6'2" bed with the factory deck rail system (UC4146). Not sure? Send us your VIN and we'll confirm.

Does my truck need the factory deck rails?

Yes. This version mounts to the factory deck rail system, using the hardware in the kit. Check that your bed has the rails before you order.

Will my tailgate open while the SE is closed?

No. The lid laps over the tailgate, so with the cover closed and locked the tailgate stays shut. Unlock the lid, let the struts lift it, then drop the tailgate. That overlap is also what keeps the whole bed behind one key.

Is the SE waterproof?

UnderCover calls its EPDM double-bulb seal weather-proof and says it keeps out rain, sleet and snow. No tonneau cover is airtight, so treat it as weather-resistant: keep electronics or paper in a sealed container and clear heavy snow off before you open the lid.

How much weight can sit on the closed lid?

UnderCover's SE Fast Facts film rates it at 400 lb, spread evenly across the closed lid. Don't stand on it or stack heavy weight in one spot.

Can I take the lid off for tall loads?

Yes, and UnderCover tells you to: never drive with the lid open or tie it down open. The lid lifts off its hinges with a helper while the brackets stay on the truck, and the two J-hooks in the box let you hang it on a wall. The lid weighs about 58 lb on average.

Here's the short version. Follow UnderCover's install sheet (below) for your truck's exact positions and measurements.

  1. Prep the bed. UnderCover designs these covers for beds without a liner; a spray-in liner is no problem. A plastic drop-in liner needs minor trimming where the brackets sit: trim the liner, never the UnderCover hardware. Remove the end caps from the Multi-Track system.
  2. Fit the prop and rear brackets. Thread the Multi-Track flat clamps loosely through the prop mounting brackets, slide them into the Multi-Track and set each one 36 3/4" from the front of the bulkhead to the center of the ball stud. Then fit the rear brackets using the two bolts nearest the tailgate, close to the top rail.
  3. Fit the front brackets. Mount them with the Multi-Track flat clamps, 16 3/8" from the back side of the bulkhead to the end of the bracket. This number sets how the cover fits, so treat it as a starting point.
  4. Set the cover. With a helper, lay the cover on the bed and slide the slots in its 4-bar hinges over the posts on the front brackets. Push it forward to lock the hinges, lift the rear and tighten the twist knobs on both hinges. Snap the struts on, large end to the cover and rod end to the ball stud; no tools needed.
  5. Check the fit. Close the cover and make sure it doesn't touch the bed sides or the tailgate: aim for a gap of 1/8" to 1/4". Move both front brackets forward or back to shift the cover evenly, or one at a time to square it. The front flap must hang over the bulkhead.
  6. Adjust the lock strikes. Move them up or down so that, with the tailgate down, there's about 1/8" between the lock and the strike. With the tailgate up, the lock should turn without any resistance.

    UnderCover warrants the SE structure against defects in material and workmanship for 3 years from the retail purchase date.
    • The gas lift struts and the mounting hardware are covered for 1 year from purchase.
    • Covers the original buyer only, on the original truck and installation, when bought from an authorized UnderCover dealer. It can't be transferred.
    • To keep it valid: never drive with the lid open or tie it down while it is open (that strains the front hinges, and a cracked hinge from it is not a defect); take the lid off and store it when you haul anything taller than the bed; keep it locked with the tailgate closed whenever it is shut, so a gust can't pop it open; clean it with mild car wash soap and only products labeled safe for plastics, and keep bug spray and other chemicals off it.
    • Check the truck now and then for rubbing. If you see any, take the cover off and contact us; a bracket adjustment may be needed. Paint damage to the truck itself is not covered, so a clear protective film on the bed rails is worth considering.
    • Claims go through UnderCover; contact us and we will help. Keep your original receipt as proof of purchase; photos of the defect may be requested before credit is issued. Overall cover is ok. Has a dip in right side over cover. I’m assuming from the molding process. Your latching system is not what it should be. Had to make several adjustments tI’m assuming from the molding process. You’re latching system is not what it should be how to make several adjustments to even get the covered to latch. The instructions are very vague on installation. For the cost of the cover you would think it’d be much better.

Bed to a trunk

Great cover. I have had multiple soft and hard folding covers on other vehicle, but getting this hard cover was the best decision I have ever made. The lid was very easy to install (as long as you have a second person), easy to use, and offers great security to the cargo in your bed (both against theft and mother nature). It is very easy to put on and take off, if you have bulky items you need to store. Sucks that you cant just roll it up so that then you finish with your bulk delivery/move you can out it back quickly, but that hasn't been a major issue for me overall. My only negative comment would be that since its an oversized product, it ships as freight, and getting a timely delivery from the freight company can add unexpected time to delivery. I am also curious as to how the brackets and pistons will hold up over time, but overall its a great product.

Watertight and looks great, with a few negatives

The UnderCover SE Tonneau Cover looks great on my 2020 Honda Ridgeline, with only three negatives. The Ridgeline requires considerably more effort to install than most trucks because you will have to install a new bed rail system on both the sides and against the cab before you can begin installing the cover, which most trucks do not require. This new bed rail narrows the width between the side bed rails about two inches and slightly interferes with the trunk opening within the bed when you want to access your equipment there. The bottom of the cover will also take up about an extra inch of bed depth when storing equipment there as well. Other than these negatives, the cover protects from water intrusion very well and looks great.

I just cannot believe on how easy it was to install by myself and how it looked . The only problem that I had , I had to remove my factory bed liner to install the mounting hardware . I have not yet reinstalled the bed liner yet do to weather and work schedule .But, it looks like that i might have to do some cutting on the liner to get it to fit again ?

Great fit, looks great

Toughest part is installing the rail pieces correctly to build a rail for the Ridgeline bed (get a Torx screw bit set up to T40) to then install the lid hinge and lock rail mounts. I’m pretty handy and it took me 2 hours altogether. I put same model on a Tundra and done in 45min. Lots of pieces and adjustments for the Ridgeline. Looks great when done and very easy to use. Would buy again.

Wrong instructions - Wrong latch rods - Great lack of concern!

I ordered an Undercover SE for a 2024 Ridgeline pick-up, I received it very quickly, that's where the good part of this ENDS. No instructions included, I saw a QR for instructions, they were generic, nothing to do with mine. I called they sent the instructions. Following the instructions it looks like I don't have enough parts, I give them a call again. I'm told the instructions are not accurate. WHAT! I continue, the latch rods are too short! I call they send me a box with rivets in it. ????

Great cover

I installed this in the rain, so it was super easy to connect to the bed rails. I had an older version of this Tonneau cover (2011) on my old truck that I would frequently stand on, so I have noticed that this newer version feels a bit less solid, like I could actually crack it in certain places if I wasn't careful where I stepped. Aside from that it seems to be a top-notch fit for my new 2018 Tundra. Also, I like the new single lock mechanism versus the older two key mechanism.

Only adequate...

Cons... 1)... Arrived with a large scratch in the finish. I didn't want to deal with a return so I let it go. Yes, I understand this was a freight issue and not the manufacturer. 2)... After only the second use of the light, it went dead in the middle of a load at night. Very frustrating. 3)... Driving in heavy rain, it isn't as "water resistant" as I'd hoped for. I bought it to protect expensive band equipment. Pros... 1)... Very easy to install with the help of only one person. Don't try it alone. 2)... Looks very good on my truck. Would I buy "Undercover" again? Probably not, but with that said, it's not bad for the price.....

Get what you pay for.

I’ll admit I bought it because it was cheap and thought a cover is a cover. Snow and rain get entry, flaps in the wind on the highway etc.

2018 Chevy Colorado Bracket Fitting

The rear bracket must fit on the bed cap flush and at a 90 degree angle. Unfortunately, there is a gap between the bed rail and plastic cap rail. A spacer is provided for the front bracket but not the rear. As recommended by company, inserted flat washers for rear bracket. While allowed for more secure bolt tightening, bracket still will not fit at 90 degrees

Great top

if your looking to keep water out this is the top to get. I wish the flap at the front was a little better, if there is standing water on the top and I open it fast the water will channel down and follow into the front of my box, other than that it would be 5 star. I had one in the past and it didn't have the ridges on the top, I don't really care for those either.

Like it, but one minor problem

My new tonneau cover is great, but I installed it myself. I am having problems with the lock. It is hard to lock and then in becomes almost impossible to unlock.

Great Tonneau Cover

I like my new cover. Easily installed by me and my buddy in less than 30 minutes. I’d give 5 stars but the delivery was made at 8:00 p.m. and there wasn’t a good way to track the delivery.

Nice cover but

The cover does what it is supposed to do and is great. The bolts are made from a very weak (whimpy metal) and will break off with very little effort. Two bolt heads broke off doring instilation. I will have to pay someone to remove it.
