How we made this guide: picks and specs come from our catalog and fitment data, owner quotes come from verified reviews and the guide was drafted with AI help, then checked and edited by Trevor Hall.
A 2019 to 2026 Chevy Silverado 1500 or GMC Sierra 1500 comes with one of three boxes: a 5'8" short box (Crew Cab only), a 6'6" standard box (Double or Crew Cab, plus the Regular Cab from 2020) or an 8' long box (Regular Cab only). GM's body builder guide puts the floor lengths at 69.92, 79.44 and 98.18 inches, with 50.6 inches between the wheel housings and 22.4 inches of depth in all three.
For a cover, the BAKFlip MX4 fits all three 2019 to 2026 boxes, from $1,199.99 on the short box.
Quick answer
- 2019 to 2026: 5'8" box (69.92 in), 6'6" box (79.44 in) and 8' box (98.18 in), measured at the floor.
- 2014 to 2018: 5'8" box (69.3 in), 6'6" box (78.9 in) and 8' box (97.8 in).
- The Sierra 1500 uses the same boxes as the Silverado 1500.
- Cover labels of 5'9", 5'10", 6'7" and 8'2" are the same boxes as GM's 5'8", 6'6" and 8'.
Silverado and Sierra 1500 bed dimensions by year and cab
The table lists GM's own figures. The 2019 to 2026 rows come from GM's body builder guide, which prints one box table from 2019 through the 2022 refresh, so the box did not change in 2022. The 2014 to 2018 rows come from GM's 2015 and 2016 spec sheets.
| Years | GM box name | Cabs | Cover labels | Length at floor | Between wheel housings | Depth | Volume |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2019 to 2026 | 5'8" short box | Crew Cab | 5'8", 5'10" | 69.92 in | 50.6 in | 22.4 in | Not published by GM |
| 2019 to 2026 | 6'6" standard box | Double, Crew; Regular from 2020 | 6'6", 6'7" | 79.44 in | 50.6 in | 22.4 in | Not published by GM |
| 2019 to 2026 | 8' long box | Regular Cab | 8', 8'2" | 98.18 in | 50.6 in | 22.4 in | 89.1 cu ft (Chevrolet) |
| 2014 to 2018 | 5'8" short box | Crew Cab | 5'8", 5'9" | 69.3 in | 51 in | 21.1 in | 53.4 cu ft |
| 2014 to 2018 | 6'6" standard box | Regular, Double, Crew | 6'6", 6'7" | 78.9 in | 51 in | 21.1 in | 61 cu ft |
| 2014 to 2018 | 8' long box | Regular Cab | 8', 8'2" | 97.8 in | 51 in | 21.1 in | 76.3 cu ft |
The 2019 Silverado LD and Sierra Limited kept the 2014 to 2018 body and were sold as Double Cabs with the 6'6" box, so they take the 2014 to 2018 figures and parts (listed as LD, Limited or Legacy 2018 Body Style).
Trim does not change a box's size, but it limits which you can get: on a 2026 truck the Regular Cab is Work Truck only, the Trail Boss, LTZ and High Country are Crew Cab only and the ZR2 comes only with the short box (2026 dealer configuration list).

2019 to 2026 Silverado and Sierra 1500 beds
The current generation has three boxes and each cab gets a fixed set of them. The Crew Cab takes the short box or the standard box. The Double Cab takes the standard box. The Regular Cab takes the 8' box, and from 2020 the standard box too: the 2019 Regular Cab was sold only with the long box, while GM's 2020 body builder chart lists the Regular Cab with either. The 8' box is Regular Cab only in every year.
Against the 2014 to 2018 boxes, each floor is 0.4 to 0.6 inch longer, the box is 1.3 inches deeper and the gap between the wheel housings is 0.4 inch narrower. Dealer spec tables list extra figures such as a 71.4 inch floor width, but GM's guide does not print them. Chevrolet itself lists 89.1 cu ft for the long box.
The 2022 Silverado 1500 LTD and Sierra 1500 Limited kept the 2019 to 2021 design and the same boxes. They take the same 2019 to 2026 cover parts, but check each part's notes before you order.
2014 to 2018 Silverado and Sierra 1500 beds
The previous generation has the same three box names with slightly shorter floors: 69.3, 78.9 and 97.8 inches. GM lists 51 inches between the wheel housings, 64.6 inches at the floor and 21.1 inches of depth.
2007 to 2013 and older beds
For the 2007 to 2013 generation (GMT900, from the 2007 New Body) we have only a third-party figure: The Car Connection's spec table lists the 2012 and 2013 Crew Cab short box at 69.3 inches at the floor, 62.4 inches wide at the floor, 50.6 inches between the wheel housings, 21 inches deep and 53.2 cu ft. We have no sourced figures for its other boxes, so we do not publish any.
For those years, and for the 1999 to 2006 trucks, go by our fitment labels. The 2007 to 2013 trucks list beds as 5'8" or 5'9", 6'6" or 6'7" and 8' or 8'2". The 1999 to 2006 trucks list 6'6" and 8', with the short bed added from 2004.
Why a cover lists a different size than GM's name
GM names its boxes in round numbers: 5'8", 6'6" and 8'. The 2019 to 2026 floors actually convert to 5 ft 9.9 in, 6 ft 7.4 in and 8 ft 2.2 in.
Cover brands round those readings their own way. That is why the 2019 to 2026 short box is 5'8" on BAK, Retrax and UnderCover listings and 5'10" on some TruXedo and Roll-N-Lock listings, and why the standard box shows as 6'6" or 6'7" and the long box as 8' or 8'2".
The label also does not tell you the generation: a 5'8" cover for a 2014 to 2018 truck is a different part from one for a 2019 to 2026 truck. Name your truck by years first, then pick the box.
How to check your bed
Measure the box and match it to a row in the table above.
- Latch the tailgate with the bed empty.
- Hold the tape at the inside of the front bed wall at rail height. Read along the side rail to the inside of the tailgate. Measure both sides and keep the shorter number.
- Compare the reading with the floor lengths above. A 2019 to 2026 short box reads about 70 inches at the rail, so a reading in that range means the 5'8" box, whichever label your cover brand uses.
Step-by-step photos and tips are in our tonneau cover measuring guide. To compare the Silverado with other pickups, our truck bed size chart puts each maker's floor length, width and depth next to the sizes cover brands list.
Which tonneau covers fit each bed
Cover makers build a separate part per Silverado generation, so order by model year and bed. These picks are from our range for the Silverado 1500, and the Sierra 1500 covers use the same sizes. For the full ranking, see our guides to the best bed covers for the Silverado 1500 and the best tonneau cover for the GMC Sierra 1500. Compare cover types in our full range of tonneau covers.
If your truck has GM's six-way tailgate (Multi-Flex on the Silverado, MultiPro on the Sierra), read each part's notes. Some covers come in versions with and without it, a CarbonPro composite box needs a CarbonPro version and many covers exclude GM's bed-side storage boxes.

BAKFlip MX4 Hard Folding Tonneau Cover
From $1,199.99 · Hard folding cover for the whole bed, 400 lb rated, 5-year warranty.
“Fit very nicely on my 2019 Chevy Silverado! Easy installation.”
BAKFlip MX4 owner · 5 out of 5 stars
The MX4 folds against the cab for 100% bed access and latches itself shut. Like any folding cover it is water-resistant, not waterproof: 15 of the 200 reviews we checked mention a leak.

Soft option
Extang Trifecta Signature 2.0 Soft Folding Tonneau Cover
From $539.99 · Canvas soft fold with tool-free clamps and a 5-year warranty.
“Exactly as advertised and an excellent value. Looks great on my new Silverado.”
Extang Trifecta Signature 2.0 owner · 5 out of 5 stars
In our range the Signature 2.0 has a 2019 to 2026 part for the 5'8" box only. It folds back to open about two thirds of the bed and has no lock of its own, so pair it with a locking tailgate. 15 of its 200 reviews we checked mention a leak, and one owner says it flaps at freeway speeds, worse when folded and strapped.
2019 to 2026 standard box (6'6" or 6'7")

Standard box
RetraxPRO MX Retractable Tonneau Cover
From $2,249.99 · Key-lockable retractable rated to 500 lb, opens with the tailgate up or down.
“Bought a Retraxpro cover for my 2022 silverado and I love it. Pretty simple to install, although it was a 2 person job.”
RetraxPRO MX owner · 5 out of 5 stars
The RetraxPRO MX has a limited lifetime warranty, holds open at any point on its rails and locks with a key; Retrax still pairs it with a locking tailgate. Eighteen of its 200 reviews we checked mention a leak, though one owner reports only a little water around the tailgate after a car wash.

2019 to 2026 long box (8' or 8'2")

Long box
BAK Revolver X4s Hard Roll-Up Tonneau Cover
From $1,549.99 · Hard roll-up whose slats lock into the rails, 400 lb rated, 5-year warranty; a locked tailgate secures it.
“Great cover! Super flush and rolls up on top of the rails for full bed access. Easy to install!”
BAK Revolver X4s owner · 5 out of 5 stars

18 of its 200 reviews we checked mention a leak, one 4-star owner reports water around the tailgate, and another says it gets a little stiff in extremely cold weather.
The 8' box is the narrow choice for retractables: the RetraxPRO MX is one of the two we list for it. The BAKFlip MX4 also has a 2019 to 2026 8' part, from $1,299.99. The MX4 and the Revolver X4s have no key lock of their own, so a locked tailgate is what secures them. The RetraxPRO MX locks with a key, and Retrax says a locking tailgate completes the setup.
2014 to 2018 standard box (6'6")
On a 2014 to 2018 truck the same covers have their own parts. The MX4's 2014 to 2018 standard-box part is from $1,249.99.
“The MX4 also fits my 2015 Silverado like a glove.”
BAKFlip MX4 owner · 5 out of 5 stars
What fits in the bed
Plywood is the usual test. A 4x8 sheet measures 48 inches across, which clears the gap between the wheel housings on every box above: 50.6 inches on the newer trucks and 51 inches on the older ones. The sheet is 96 inches long and the 8' box floor is 98.18 inches (97.8 on the older truck), so it fits with the tailgate up. On the 6'6" and 5'8" boxes the sheet sticks out past the tailgate, so drop the tailgate and tie the load down.
Frequently asked questions
What is the bed size of a 2026 Silverado Trail Boss?
The 2026 LT Trail Boss and Custom Trail Boss come only as Crew Cabs, with the 5'8" short box (69.92 in at the floor) or the 6'6" standard box (79.44 in), per a 2026 dealer configuration list. Both boxes are 50.6 inches between the wheel housings and 22.4 inches deep, the same as any other trim. No Trail Boss gets the 8' box, which is Regular Cab only.
Is the Sierra 1500 bed the same size as the Silverado 1500?
Yes. GM's 2019 to 2026 body builder chart heads each cab column Chevrolet and GMC, and the Sierra 1500 cover labels match the Silverado's in every year. Both trucks come with the 5'8", 6'6" and 8' boxes.
What is the standard bed length of a Chevy 2500?
The 2020 to 2026 Silverado HD standard bed is listed at 6'9" by cover makers, longer than the 1500's 6'6". The 2007 to 2019 HD standard bed is listed at 6'6". Both generations also list an 8' bed (some brands show 8'2"). Never fit a 1500 cover to a current HD unless the part says so. See the Silverado HD tonneau covers for those beds.
Which Silverado cab has the 8-foot bed?
Only the Regular Cab, on both the 2014 to 2018 and 2019 to 2026 trucks. The 8' box is 98.18 inches at the floor on the current generation and 97.8 inches on the previous one.
